Scene 2: Golden Pupils (1)

Standing in the middle of the crowd, Lu Mingfei glanced at his train ticket and looked up at the church-like dome of Chicago’s train station.

He had two huge suitcases about his own weight, and his backpack bulged out at the back because his aunt had put a cooker in it, a 12-hole quilt in a woven bag, a pillow tied to a suitcase, and his passport in his mouth.

As the top among the tops, Lu Mingfei had brought all the things he needs, took American airway and landed at Chicago International Airport. He will take CC1000 express to Cassel College in Chicago railway station according to the schedule given by Norma.

“I really want to send you there myself, but I have to fly to Russia.” Professor Guderian said in the call. “But don’t worry, Norma will arrange everything.”

Indeed, Norma was an excellent secretary, and three weeks later a huge envelope arrived in the hands of Lu Mingfei, completed with everything from a passport to itinerary, along with a copy of [Cassel College’s Idiot’s Guide to Enrolling], marked “Lu Mingfei’s version”.

The guidebook was titled ridiculously but it worked well, that is, before Lu Mingfei arrived at the Chicago train station.

“The CC1000 express? Never heard of it… Maybe some kind of feeder train? But the number you said is not quite right… The new train schedule contains all the information about the train number. Check again… The ticket seems to be real, but I didn’t know there is such a train…” These were the answer given by the different staff on duty.

This express is not shown in the timetable.

” What the heck!” Lu Mingfei freaked out in the crowd.

God promised Moses, “Go to Canaan, a land flowing with honey and milk”, and give him a map. Moses crossed the red sea with mighty divine power, escaped from Egyptian’s manhunt and finally saw in front of the signpost written “to India”, “to China”, “to Japan”, but no “to Canaan”. The police uncle under the signpost said, “Canaan? Nope, I don’t know!”

Perhaps that’s the feeling of Lu Mingfei at the moment.

He had only twenty dollars left in his pocket. His aunt gave him $500 to spend on the trip, but as he passed Chicago customs, the chubby cop counted the dozens of pirated PS2 discs Lu Mingfei had brought with him, jotted down some scary numbers on the receipts and praised his taste, “Resident evil IV! Ha! Ha! Do you also like The Dynasty Warrior series? Ho! I love Dragon Quest, too! …… “

Maybe out of the appreciation of his taste, the cop left twenty dollars to Lu Mingfei.

Now the Moses, who had travelled thousands of miles, was standing at the Subway door. He was clutching his only twenty-dollar, wondering if he should stay hungry or buy a sandwich and coke. No matter how good the $36, 000 scholarship was, he now has only twenty dollars, six dollars spent and fourteen dollars left. How many more days? Maybe he should save his rations for a phone card to call the college? He didn’t have a cell phone, and the N96 was given to his uncle as a parting gift.

“One dollar, just one dollar…” Someone said behind his back.

In the United States, it is a typical beggar’s phrase, asking for a dollar, the same as the Lotus Rhyme by beggars in ancient China.

“No, I’m poor! No money!” Lu Mingfei replied in plain English.

He looked over his shoulder at the tall, burly young man behind him. His face, buried in his whiskers, was actually handsome. His eyes were ablaze with longing, with a plaid dark green shirt and baggy trousers that not been washed for a long time. It’s not easy to meet such a beggar in America, because all the other beggars are dressed better than him.

“Chinese?” The other side perceived the nationality of Lu Mingfei, immediately changed to speak fluent Chinese, “Dude please give me some money to buy a cup of coke, I am not really a beggar, just went out and lost my wallet.”

You are so familiar with both speaking tone of Chinese and English beggars, you dare to say you are not a professional beggar? Lu Mingfei thought.

“Fingel Von Frings, a college student. I’m really not a beggar.” In order to prove his identity, the young man grabbed out a thick textbook from his satchel.

The book that looked old had the title in a mixture of English and Latin, something he seemed to have read somewhere.

This guy speaks fluent Chinese… Lu Mingfei had a flash in his mind. He had seen this style on the admission documents of Cassel College.

“You’re waiting for… CC1000 express?” Lu Mingfei asked.

Each drew from his pocket a magnetic card, exactly the same ticket, black with silver-painted with the pattern of a huge leafy tree.

“I’m a freshman, Lu Mingfei.” Lu Mingfei held out his hand to show his friendliness.

“My dear! Finally a dollar for coke.” Fingel grabbed Lu Mingfei’s hand.

Is there nothing but coke in that chicken coop head of yours? Lu Mingfei thought.

“Brother I admire you very much, you are a righteous person!” Fingel sat sprawled on the bench, munching his sandwich and sipping Lu Mingfei’s coke.

They added up to only $25, and since coke is free to refill, Lu Mingfei suggested they don’t need to buy two, just two straws and double the number of refills. Fingel came from the developed capitalist country Germany, but he had no conscious of the health section, praised the Chinese schoolmate is very thoughtful.

“Senior brother, which grade are you?” Lu Mingfei asked.

“Grade 8.”

“Grade 8?” Lu Mingfei choked.

“Well, it’s fourth grade, but I stayed down,” Fingel said.

“Then why it’s grade 8?”

“Stayed down for four years… “

Lu Mingfei was very anxious about his future and decided not to discuss the horrible thing like staying down for the time being. “So you took the train before?”

“At the beginning of every semester. Otherwise, we would have to go by helicopter. The campus is in the mountains, and only this train goes there. No one knows the schedule, at least no one at Chicago station. The last staff who knew the time dead a few years before, he said the train started its work since WWII.” Fingel said, “But don’t worry, it will come. Low level students have to wait for it.”

“Level? What is it? Like the bourgeoisie and the proletariat?”

“Something like an aristocratic status, where the upper level students have some privileges and the resources of the college are given to him in priority, like the train.”

“You’ve been in school for eight years and your level isn’t high enough?”

“To be honest, I’m struggling with dropping out and making up for my credit!” Fingel spread his hands.

“Is it easy to find a job after graduating from Cassel College? You didn’t drop out of the fourth grade for four years?”

“Nope, they assign work!” Fingel belched loudly.

Looking out of the station’s floor-to-ceiling windows, Lu Mingfei saw dark skyscrapers that looked like giants standing side by side as night fell on the city of Chicago, the elevated railroad throwing bright sparks as trains passed, pedestrians scurrying and neon lights flashing.

Fingel and he had spent two nights at Chicago’s train station. Unable to afford a hotel room, they can only sleep on a bench in the waiting hall, wrapped in blankets. If it’s not the fact that their tickets can actually be used on the machine, they would have been kicked out by security. But no one at Chicago’s train station knew about the mysterious CC1000 express.

Fingel didn’t care. He said it was the same for him every time he went back to school. The only reason is their low level, and high-level students can take the train easily at the VIP entrance.  Lu Mingfei had to ask how low their priorities were. Fingel says it’s about the same as the medieval serfdom. Lu Mingfei was in low spirits, but Fingel consoled him by saying that there were people lower than serfs. There were even people have the same class as mules.

The two of them were alone in the waiting hall. Fingel strolled around with his books, the reading sound of him were echoing through the vast space. Gradually Lu Mingfei’s consciousness grew dim and he heard the distant bell faintly.

Bell, seemed very distant from the church. Lu Mingfei closed his eyes, thinking about wasteland and dark church shadow far away under the moon, thinking about people with torches running in the wasteland, the moon can’t light up their faces, that hidden in the shadows. They ran to the full moon, the incredibly large moon, sinking half round below the horizon. They leap from the mountain top to the moon.

He stunned, not knowing how he could have thought of it. Crazy, magnificent and real, as if he had seen it with his own eyes.

Why are there such monotonous bells? He was in Chicago and it was a noisy road outside. Why did he hear only the monotonous and lonely bell? There should be no church nearby.

He sat upon the bench as a huge moon rose from the french window. The moonlight poured in like the tide on the shore. The whole waiting hall was bathed in the cold, watery moonlight, and the shadows of the window panes casting on the back of the bench. A boy sat silent, looking up into the moonlight.

The guard at the door was gone. In the distance, Subway’s sandwich shop had its lights out. He and the boy were alone. He felt very strange, but he dared to speak or even breathe hard. There was an unbreakable silence in the waiting hall.

The boy looked Chinese, about thirteen or fourteen years old, in a little black frock coat with moonlight on his young face. Lu Mingfei didn’t know why such a child had the silence and sadness of “I have lived for thousands of years” written on his face. Besides, there were so many vacant benches, but the boy sat only beside him as if waiting for him to wake up.

Lu Mingfei lifted the blanket and sat down beside the boy. The two men looked at the moon in silence, time slowly passing, as if two people watching the sea.

“Exchange? “The boy whispered.

“What?” Lu Mingfei didn’t understand what he was saying.

“Exchange?” The boy asked again.

“For what? I am poor, no money…”

“So you still refused?” The boy turned his head slowly. His golden pupil looks like a mirror on fire.

All the will of Lu Mingfei was swallowed up by the flame in a moment. His whole body suddenly quivered as if on the verge of extinction, and a huge force was born in his body. He jerked back.

“Ah!” The scream of Fingel woke Lu Mingfei.

Fingel was squatting next to his head. The noise came from outside, the footsteps of pedestrians, the honking of cars, the grinding of wheels and rails, all the sounds of a metropolis. The two guards dozing by the door, while Subway was still opening in a distance.

“Or is it a dream?” Lu Mingfei thought.

He never had two overlapping dreams. In the first, he saw people running on the moors. In the second he talked to the boy. He entered the second dream from the first dream, but actually, he’s just sleeping on the branch with the blanket on him.

“Don’t jump in your dream, you were like a frightened flea!” Fingel complained.

Lu Mingfei wiped the sweat from his forehead. Why are you scared? Because of the boy’s golden pupils? What’s so weird about golden pupils? How many colours of pupils did those girls in the ACG club have before?

“Take your luggage and here comes the train,” Fingel said.

Lu Mingfei heard the bell and the sound of the train whistle. Fingel was right that a train has just arrived, its lights flashing on the platform. At 2 am, on a night when there are no overtime trains, the CC1000 express pulls in.

A dark figure appeared at the empty ticket barrier. It was a man in a dark green uniform, with a small gold bell in his hand and a badge on his hat. He was holding a flashlight in one hand and a card reader in the other.

“CC1000 express, please prepare to board, please prepare to board.” The conductor’s voice echoed through the hall.

The two guards fell asleep again. It seemed that only Fingel could sense the conductor’s arrival, not even Subway’s clerks. It was a strange thing that such a well-dressed conductor should appear in the middle night at the modern Chicago railway station, but no one noticed him at all.

Lu Mingfei shivered. The conductor was like a… ghost!

“Why is it like… train from hell?” He grabbed Fingel’s sleeve.

“It’s just his Speaking Spirit. He’s a normal human being and he’s even a fan of Backstreet Boys.” Fingel said.

“Speaking Spirit?” Lu Mingfei asked.

“We are here we are here! Lu Mingfei and Fingel!” Fingel waved.

Taking his ticket from his pocket, Lu Mingfei followed Fingel to the gate with his bags. When he saw the conductor’s face, he believed Fingel. That guy did not look like a ghost, chewing gum and blowing bubbles.

The conductor took Fingel’s ticket across the ticket machine with a green light and “Beep”.

“Fingel, are you still in school?” Said the conductor.” I thought I won’t see you this year.”

“I’m a man who always finishes his way,” said Fingel. “the train comes so late because my level goes down again?”

“Down to ‘F’. You are ‘A’ before, down from heaven to hell.” Said the conductor.

“From serf to animal indeed…” Fingel murmured.

Lu Mingfei’s ticket went across the ticket machine, but there was music with the green light.

“Lu Mingfei?” The conductor’s beautiful green eyes lit up. “I’m sorry, but there was a scheduling error. Your level is ‘S’, but there are few people at that level, so the system went wrong, just like Y2K.” 1)

” ‘S’?” Fingel’s eyes widened. “Isn’t the principal the only ‘S’?”

“There are some, but not more than ten people.” Said the conductor. “Get on quickly. It won’t stay too long.”

“I have a question… Is this really an official train? Why isn’t it on the train list? Why not be there on time?” Lu Mingfei cannot help but ask. It’s a weird train in and out. If it is really something like hell express, he can at least pray before taking step in.

“Yeah, through Cassel College, specially approved by the Chicago government. It’s not on the train list because it’s a regional train, it doesn’t run regularly. Do you know that special trains go from the public railroad to some mines and factories? We are the same as those.” The conductor’s answer was very frank.

They followed the conductor to the platform, where the bullet train stopped on the tracks with blazing headlights. The train is black, streamlined, and the dazzling silver-white vine pattern spreads out on the black paint, gorgeous as a work of art. Outside the only sliding door stood a familiar figure, Professor Guderian.

The train sped through the darkness across an oak-barred table, where Lu Mingfei, Fingel, and Professor Guderian sat opposite each other. The carriages are elegantly European style: the walls are decorated with Victorian-style floral wallpaper, the portholes are clad in solid wood, and the blackish green leather sofas are embroidered with gold threads. Lu Mingfei and Fingel had changed into the Cassel College’s school uniform: White shirt, dark green suit with a silver edge, rose colour scarf, embroidered with the badge of Cassel College — the word tree, on the chest. Although they had never measured his stature, they did the clothes fit. Lu Mingfei opened his cuffs and saw his name thread embroidery, Ricardo. M. Lu.

From set foot on this train to change into this dress, Lu Mingfei suddenly felt that he was a top guy, a very top guy.

But he could not help feeling a little frightened, not knowing why, as if something bad is about to happen.

“Coffee or hot chocolate?” Asked Professor Guderian. He had his back against the wall, and behind him was a large painting with canvas blocking.

“Hot chocolate.” Fingel raised his hand.

“Not you, seriously. I’m your temporary tutor assigned by the school, and this is tutorial time,” Professor Guderian said, looking at Lu Mingfei. “You can have a bottle of wine or something.”

“…Can I drink before a teacher?”

“They’ll just give you a drink to calm you down so you won’t scream in the middle of your tutorial,” Fingel whispered in his ear.

“What?? Is that an exaggeration?” Lu Mingfei was shocked.

“More than you think… Even more exaggerated.” Professor Guderian said. “First of all, I’m sorry I’m late. I was delayed in Russia for quite a while, and after I returned to the college I found the system error. So I decided to follow the train to take you. Second, every student is required to take an entrance examination, which we call the ‘3E’ examination. If you did not pass it, we can’t take you and the scholarship will be frozen.”

“A qualification exam?” Lu Mingfei was relieved. “Although it was scary… But at least my heart is ok right now.”

“Here’s a non-disclosure agreement you should sign.” Professor Guderian handed over a document.

Facing the odd document with Latin mixed with English, Lu Mingfei signed it with trembling hands. What could he refuse now that with express speeding at more than 200kph to the mysterious Cassel College, which’s the route his parents had pointed out to him?

Professor Guderian put away the documents carefully. “As a formal university registered with the U.S. Department of Education, Cassel College has been committed to providing high-quality education to students with special talents and recommending jobs. Our normal length of schooling is four years, examples as Fingel rarely exists. Our school has a classical closed education; all students must live on campus. When you are graduated, we will issue you a formal degree certificate. But unfortunately, our degree certificate may not help you find a corresponding major in other universities, so if you want to study for a master’s degree or doctor’s degree, our school is your only choice.”

“You mean… Not a proper degree?” Lu Mingfei was alarmed.

“No, it’s a proper one. Our degree is in line with the requirements of the ministry of education. I mean, our major is very special,” Professor Guderian said carefully. “very special.”

“How special?” Lu Mingfei blinked.

“Do you know divinity school?”

Lu Mingfei nodded.

Scene 1: The Gate of Cassel (7)

“Letter letter, don’t run, the extras all have payment!” Zhao Menghua’s friends called Lu Mingfei, “Everyone had done a good job.”

Lu Mingfei looked back, Zhao Menghua narrowed an eye to grimace. Lu Mingfei knew what that means, he thought he should go back to punch Zhao Menghua, but he’s score on PE was also far less than Zhao Menghua, no need to mention he got lots of dudes. He had been weak for so many years and got used to it. So he said “oh”, turned his head and walked on to the stage, to be his “I”.

Then the light came from behind him, like lightning breaking through a cloud, and someone pushed the door of the screening room harshly.

There are times in a man’s life when he thinks he has seen the door of heaven open. Lu Mingfei had waited for 18 years. At his worst moment, the door opened.

The angel came in and looked around with the sight of the blade.

All were silent. The intruder, her lightness had overwhelming all other people. She was so dazzling that Lu Mingfei thought she was simply to show off.

“Ricardo, we do not have enough time, do you still want to participate in the activities?” Nuo Nuo went to the front of Lu Mingfei with a piercingly cold and clear tone. Everyone can hear her clearly.

Her style of dress changed completely. Her dark red hair was combed neatly. Dark purple skirt, moon white silk blouse, purple stockings, and gold-amethyst customized jewelry had made her ten centimetres higher than usual. Her pressure even let Lu Mingfei’s legs feel weak. Nuo Nuo gave him a hand just in time to steady him.

“Oh, I…” He was the focus of all eyes, like a hot kettle on a solar oven. He’s going to burn under those sights.

“I told you not to wear these on sale clothes.” Nuo Nuo waved her hand.

Two girls with delicate makeup rushed forward and took off his clothes, but the process was gentle. Lu Mingfei did not have time to escape. Nuo Nuo took out a comb from her close-fitting bag, turned behind him to comb his hair. The feeling was between his mother and his sister. The two girls were probably clerks in a clothing store, holding five or six suits and leather shoes for Lu Mingfei to try on and match.

“This is our Ricardo M. Lu.” Nuo Nuo patted his face and smiled with thoughtfulness.

She faced the students, only Lu Mingfei knew what she is doing. Nuo Nuo pinched the face of Lu Mingfei happily, pinched into a fox and pinched into a pig. Lu Mingfei knew that she was very proud of his appearance right now. The little witch will not let someone overcome her willingly; she could only overcome and save, but not the other way round.

“Zhao Menghua wanted to trick you intentionally, junior brother.” Nuo Nuo whispered.

“How?”

“I use some beauty to let that little fatty tells me the truth.” Nuo Nuo looked pleased.

“Beauty?

“Just talking to him.” Nuo Nuo strengthened her pinch. “You think I’m good for everyone but not only you?”

Finally, the two salesgirls put a folded kerchief into the pocket of Lu Mingfei and asked Nuo Nuo’s opinion with their eyes.

Nuo Nuo looked up and down at the new outfit and frowned. “So so. It’s far away from Ricardo’s standard.”

“Hi, dear students. Ricardo has evening activities and we shall go first. Have a nice day.” Nuo Nuo bowed to Lu Mingfei’s classmates slightly, showing the immaculate smile of the housekeeper in the courtyard, cold, and consummate.

“Ricardo? “Zhao Menghua asked.

“Ricardo M. Lu, that’s what we called him.” Nuo Nuo said.

“Let’s go! Lift your eyebrows and chest! Don’t be silly!” Nuo Nuo stabbed Lu Mingfei in the back.

Lu Mingfei nodded his head and walked out obediently. Nuo Nuo took his arm with faintly smelling of perfume. But now Nuo Nuo looked a little taller than Lu Mingfei and felt like his sister was picking up him from school. Lu Mingfei thought that Chen Wenwen is looking at his back at the moment at Zhao Menghua’s side. He upstaged Zhao Menghua but got nothing.

Everything floated away as dreamlike light.

There was a car parked in front of the theatre, Ferrari 599GTBFiorano, red as a flame. He read in a car magazine that it was going to sell for about $5 million. He looked at Nuo Nuo hesitantly.

“Get in the car, be natural. They’re following you around, looking at you like, ‘Ferrari is nothing, my house is nothing but Bugatti Veyron and Maybach’!” Nuo Nuo whispered.

Lu Mingfei sat in the passenger seat, his hands on his knees sincerely. Nuo Nuo started the engine and the Ferrari bolted out like a wild horse. Lu Mingfei knew he was farther and farther away from his past, but he did not look back.

In the darkness, the Ferrari raced down the elevated road with lights blazing on both sides. Lu Mingfei looked at the fast passing lights outside and felt that he was dreaming. Now he turned into a small firefly in the stream of light. He rushed forward with other fireflies, not knowing whether there was an exit ahead.

“I never thought it would happen to me.” Lu Mingfei mumbled.

“What is it? Dumped by your lover in front of everyone, then got kicked to the corner?” Nuo Nuo glanced at him.

“It’s picked up by a hot girl driven a Ferrari in front of everyone.”

“But the hot girl driving the Ferrari doesn’t have oil.” Nuo Nuo said.

Their speed went down in a sudden, and the Ferrari turned off from elevated road to a deserted alley. The engine died and the car stopped in front of a 24-hour drugstore, which’s the only light on the street.

“Heck, I forgot to refuel.” Nuo Nuo clapped her hands on the steering wheel. “Let’s get off and wait until they send a car to pick us up.” Nuo Nuo opened the door and jumped down.

“We can take a few steps to get a taxi.” Lu Mingfei suggested.

“Nope, I don’t want to walk. I’m wearing high heels.” Nuo Nuo refused with the simplest ground.

Lu Mingfei looked under the skirt of Nuo Nuo’s suit. It was a pair of Mary Jane high heels with at least ten centimetres. With this pair of shoes, she instantly evolved from a sporty girl to a ladylike woman.

Nuo Nuo adjoined to Lu Mingfei proudly, “Look, this makes me as tall as you.”

“You will die if you are not over other people?” Lu Mingfei sat on the curb with his arms around his knees.

Nuo Nuo didn’t cherish that exquisite dress. She sat down beside Lu Mingfei, took out her mobile phone and sent a message.

“Why are you being so nice to me? Lu Mingfei asked.

“It’s not ‘we’ that’s nice to you. It’s ‘I’ that’s nice to you. The college only wants you and they will not care who you like. You bought me ice cream, didn’t you? That’s just paying back.” Nuo Nuo said.

Lu Mingfei suddenly looked at Nuo Nuo, “Hey, did you prepare for this? You guys are trying to trick me, or why would you wear this? Are you that kind of ladylike sister?”

“Who’s playing you? I went out in jeans and sneakers. After I knew you were being played on, so I just drove off to buy a suit, put it on, and I ran in all the way.”

Lu Mingfei looked into her eyes and knew she was not lying. He was moved a little to cry but refrained.

“It doesn’t matter. If you agree to be admitted, you will be our junior brother of Cassel college. As your senior sister, I need to take care of you.” Nuo Nuo said.

“Any other chance?”

“It’s an exception for you. You can choose one more time.” Nuo Nuo patted Lu Mingfei’s shoulder, revealing a narrow smile, “But now it’s all right to follow us. Anyway, I knew that Chen Wenwen doesn’t like you.”

“Don’t rub it in, please?” Lu Mingfei turned his head away. “She didn’t mean to, she just couldn’t feel my existence.”

“Well well, Mr. Don Juan, everything is all right in your heart about Chen Wenwen even she dumped you.” Nuo Nuo shrugged, “Didn’t she know your mind? If yes, why she made you like this?”

“Hey, why on earth did you want me? Don’t lie to me, just because of my mom and dad? Can you make that clear? Even if I jump into a fire pit, I need to know why I jump.”

Nuo Nuo slapped him on the forehead, “36,000 dollars’ scholarship, lots of people will just jump for this fire pit! You’re really expensive.”

Lu Mingfei had no way to deal with Nuo Nuo: if he’s a little tough, she will be ten times more tough than him. He shouldered Nuo Nuo, “Are we friends? Maybe leak a little to a friend.” He made a “little” gesture with a pleading tone, “Otherwise I will not know the truth.”

“All I can tell you is that you are very important to us. It’s the principle’s decision to have you but not Professor Guderian… “Nuo Nuo exuded a little fox’s charm, “Come! Call me sister!”

“SISTER.” Lu Mingfei pronounced very clearly.

“Well, good boy.” Nuo Nuo said complacently. “But I don’t know why the principal wants you.”

Lu Mingfei had no other ways. “Well, I agree. What if I don’t? I did not review well and can’t pass the entrance examination. What will my classmates think of me for showing off so much in front of them today?” He looked down. “What should I do if and what shall I say when I go back?”

He was a little sad. The Ferrari in front of him, the little princess Nuo Nuo beside him, the $36,000 scholarship and the distant Cassel College, all seemed to be a mirage. They suddenly came to him and will be disappeared. He looks like Cinderella, in which the witch gives him a beautiful girl and a Ferrari, but at midnight, it will be invalid and will be returned to its original form. What the hell is he? What’s the value of him? He can’t even explain himself.

Nuo Nuo looked at his eyes with a face clearly written “I am very sad” and felt a little pity. She suddenly put out her hands to grasp the head of Lu Mingfei and exclaimed, “You now look like the little rabbit which’s used to wipe the butt of the bear!”

Lu Mingfei was so angry that he almost burped. “You were wiped by a bear, and your whole family was wiped by a bear!”

Nuo Nuo was not angry at all. She opened her arms and looked at him with her head askew. “Come, little rabbit, give me a hug!”

Surprised, Lu Mingfei looked down at Nuo Nuo and felt feverish when he saw her chest, soft as a spring ridgeline under the silk. In order to not be shamed too much and reclined in Nuo Nuo’s arms, his hands tightly embrace his chest and shirked back, “Why do you want to eat my tofu?” 1)

Nuo Nuo spat out her tongue, “Look at you. I’m just comforting you, are you tofu? You are at most a dried bean curd!”

“Dried bean curds also have their dignity.” Lu Mingfei had to say some disordered words to cover up his confusion.

“Well, have you decided? Quick decision. There won’t be a second chance.” she said, taking off her heels. “My feet hurt.”

“I…” Lu Mingfei said, “Well, I accept.”

Nuo Nuo put the pair of purple gold high heels on the side and jumped on the street only wearing socks, not afraid of dirty, “This is more comfortable! Look what a sacrifice I’ve made for you! I hate wearing high heels. Give Professor Guderian a call, and tell him yourself, then the choice will work.” Nuo Nuo said.

“Work?”

“You are different from normal people. You have a hidden choice in your life. If you have this call, the hidden choice will be activated.” Nuo Nuo said. “We always say there’s always another option, whether you want it or not.”

“Hidden… Options?” Lu Mingfei opened the phone and dialled Professor Guderian’s number.

“Mingfei, I’m in Beijing right now. Have you make the decision?” Guderian Professor’s voice was even more nervous than Lu Mingfei’s, it seems that Lu Mingfei is a superb beauty, who is considering to marry him.

Lu Mingfei licked his lips, “I’ve made the decision. I agree to sign the document.”

Nuo Nuo was jumping on the small stone street. She didn’t even look at Lu Mingfei.

“Confirm?” Professor Guderian was delighted.

“Confirm.” Lu Mingfei thought this sentence is like a wedding girl saying “I do”, which will affect his life.

“Validation passed, option on. Lu Mingfei, date of birth February 14, 1992, male, code A.D.0013, level ‘S’, listed at Cassel college. Database access is opened, the account is created, the course selection table is generated. I’m Norma, secretary of Cassel College, at your service. Your ticket, passport and visa will arrive in three weeks. Welcome, Lu Mingfei.” A steady female speaker was on the phone.

Professor Guderian’s voice came again. “Mingfei, the voiceprint signed was finished, and the rest will be taken care by Norma. Are you with Nuo Nuo? Stay where you are, and I will send a conveyance to meet you at once. There’s a few document need to be signed.”

The phone hung up, Lu Mingfei was still a little confused about what had just happened.

“Norma is the central computer of the academy. She’s an anthropomorphic computer. “Said Nuo Nuo.” Let’s play jumping grid!”

“Oh, ok. “Said Lu Mingfei.

Jumping with the grid, Lu MingFei has no idea what is happening around the world just now. What before was just a start. A large number of data packets gushed from the supercomputer named “Norma” to different corners of the world. The word “Lu MingFei” had appeared on the screens of a lot of people, and was remembered in mind. After the data lock was opened, thousands of secret gateway were opened for “Lu MingFei”.

Cassel College had just embraced its new student.

A loud noise was making its way through the dark night sky.

“What???” He murmured.

“The old guy was in such a hurry to pick you up?” Nuo Nuo looked up. “The helicopter is coming.”

On Friday, May 15, 2009, a black helicopter flew over a southern town like a giant bird over the head of young Lu Mingfei.

The war, hidden in history, is about to reopen.

Scene 1: The Gate of Cassel (6)

He wondered where his exit was. He wondered about Chen Wenwen.

After Nuo Nuo went to another way, Chen Wenwen suddenly said that she would go to the river to have a look. Dandelions were blooming on the grass by the river, and those little brushy flowers were everywhere. Chen Wenwen picked a lot and put them with bluebells together in the paper bag. She sat by the river to talk with Lu Mingfei and took off her shoes to soak feet in the clear water. Chen Wenwen said that we will be separated in university and may only meet in the summer vacation. If we don’t meet for a long time, a lot of good friends are going to slowly forget each other.

Chen Wenwen’s eyes were filled with sadness when she said this, even more so than when she read L’amant when she entered the school.

Lu Mingfei sat beside her to look at her eyes, watching the wind blowing to the paper bag in her arms with dandelion scattered and sprinkled on the water, like little snow piece.

There was a small bird jumping in Lu Mingfei’s heart faintly.

The phone in his arms began to vibrate at this time.

“Lu Mingfei, right?” It was Nuo Nuo’s voice on the phone.

“It’s me.” Said Lu Mingfei.

“Tell you a secret, Professor Guderian is flying to Beijing tomorrow. It depends on you to go or not. You better make your decision today, because we don’t have a lot of places.”

Lu Mingfei was in a hurry. “Can we wait for tomorrow? Tomorrow… “

Tomorrow he will do an earthshaking event, success or not. If Chen Wenwen accepts his confession, he will stay in China; on the contrary, he has to go to the United States to study and left a legend in his high school: a guy was frustrated extremely, but was lucky enough to get the admission letter to the United States university.

“Nope, Professor Guderian has booked a ticket.” Nuo Nuo’s tone was cold.

Lu Mingfei was silent for a long time and scratched his head. “Then I know.”

“What do you mean you know?

“That is to say… So be it.” Said Lu Mingfei.

“That’s why you refuse us? You have tough! Chen Wenwen looks not really beautiful. You see, our Cassel College’s gate is open to everybody only once at most.”

“Just because you look better than Chen Wenwen doesn’t mean I like you… “Said Lu Mingfei depressed.

“Good man! I didn’t think you had that kind of toughness!” Nuo Nuo seems angry. “Ok! Goodbye!”

The phone was hung up. Lu Mingfei looked at the gradually extinguished screen and felt this bet is really big.

At the moment he looked at the city under the night, thinking of tomorrow’s party. When Chen Wenwen let him speak to dozens of literary club students, he would do the most daring thing.

“Only I have absolutely no way back, the freedom to pursue no one can refuse… ” 1) He hummed an ugly song.

This guy had been like that for the rest of his “remarkable” life. He’s always wilting like a dry cucumber, but once he had decided what to do, he will become as fresh as parsley soaked in water.

“I am a man who sometimes goes mad.” This is his catchphrase afterwards.

In the bathroom at studios, Lu Mingfei looked in the mirror to listen to his own pounding heart. He wondered over and over again whether he thought of every step.

The film is about to begin, and the moment of the final is coming.

Flowers, music, loud confession. Three magic weapons of Nuo Nuo’s version.

No problem with flowers. He went to the river in the afternoon to pick a lot of dandelions and tied up in a paper bag. He temporarily gave up the rose, because Chen Wenwen likes dandelion, more suitable than roses.

Music was also settled. Lu Mingfei got a box of real cigarettes from Uncle’s drawer then went downstairs to the tobacco store for two packages of fakes, and then put a fake package back, another fake package was given to the projectionist uncle – this is always Lu Mingfei’s way to make money. The projectionist promised to show a clip of Eve breaking through the sound barrier with Wall-E before the opening scene, and the background music was 120 percent moving.

He had searched confession words from the Internet and collected the most moving statement to make a good draft:

“After three years, it’s probably time for our club to separate and we will rarely be able to get together. After seasons changing, it will not be the same group of people here. It’s a bit sad… As the executive of the literature club, it’s an honour to stand here and make the speech. These speeches should have been given to all the members, but I just want to say to one person… “

At this time the most impatient one “Little Fairy” may jump out and yell, “Lu Mingfei what do you want to say?”

If she does so, Lu Mingfei would say with his fiercest tone, “Shut up! I’m not talking to you! I just want to talk to Chen Wenwen! I’ve liked her for three years! I won’t wait for another three years! I don’t want to be a good person in my whole lifetime!”

This last line was adapted from the movie Infernal Affairs, which made him feel like a man. This tough style might save his face: if Chen Wenwen refuses him he doesn’t need to pretend heartbroken, which is a shame. A man like a little white rabbit is no good because he can only be the female’s best friend!

Lu Mingfei nodded to himself in the mirror with a ferocious look and sharp eyes, which means “Mingfei you are so good”!

“What are you doing?” Zhao Menghua went into the washroom.

“I don’t know why my face started to cramp suddenly, so I twist it to see what’s going on.” Lu Mingfei’s react was fast and he turned to face Zhao Menghua, slanting his mouth eyes to let his facial expression be more exaggerated, “Do I look like Steven Crow?”

“No, it’s more like Arale 2),” Zhao Menghua said, giving him a bag. “Clothes. Go change them when you give the speech. Chen Wenwen said you need to be more proper.”

Inside was a black suit, a white shirt and a narrow black tie, and their size fitted his lean body well. Lu Mingfei had wanted a set, but his aunt did not promise him. Why did Chen Wenwen know he wanted such a suit? The great happiness hit him like a hammer on the head, making him almost dizzy.

He touched his phone in a hurry. Lu Mingfei wanted to make a phone call with Nuo Nuo, said he had played a triumphant song before grabbing his bayonet.

“Sorry, the number you dialled is out of service, please try later… “

Lu Mingfei slowly closed the phone. He thought that maybe Nuo Nuo had gone, gone forever, like fireworks and bubbles.

There is really no way back now. Confession and he must succeed.

Lu Mingfei walked into the hall, and the voice of Su Xiaoqiang was like needles in his ears. “Hahaha! You see a monkey in suits… “

Dozens of members of the literary club who were drinking coke and eating popcorn burst into laughter and Lu Mingfei’s face turned to the colour of eggplant.

“That’s not enough, there is even piggy with suits.” Some people said that.

The literary club’s fattest twin brothers, Xu Yanyan and Xu Miaomiao also came in wearing black suits. The two brothers were as chubby as two basketballs standing side by side.

“And you two will do the speech?” Lu Mingfei looked at the brothers curiously. The three of them were all dressed the same.

“We don’t speak. We are just the foil.” Xu Yanyan said, “Who will refuse to be extras if they get paid?”

Lu Mingfei was at a loss. He looked at the side of Chen Wenwen, she slightly nodded to him, bright and clear.

“You’ll be in that position in a minute to do the speech.” Zhao Menghua said, pointing to a copy paper in front of the screen. “Just stand there and don’t block the screen. We shall have pictures of our club later.”

“Pictures of the literary club?” Lu Mingfei didn’t expect this. What about that movie clip he prepared?

Uncle projectionist’s reliable figure appeared in front of him. When he handed the packet of cigarettes, the uncle looked down at the crowd proudly with a snap. His head rose 45 degrees upward with a strong thumbs-up, “The projection hall is my place! Don’t worry! I will play it for you anyway.” Lu Mingfei decided to trust the uncle.

The lights dimmed, leaving only the white copy paper on the stage. Well, that is his stage, life war, take this girl and he can get all the happiness in his life! Everything’s ready, dandelion, Wall-E, confession, and he’s in a suit, high-spirited and vigorous.

Lu Mingfei strode onto the stage and stood in front of the screen. He took a deep breath then he was ready to shout to the world, Chen Wenwen, I like you!

Nuo Nuo said to put all he has on the bet, Lu Mingfei thinks he has this consciousness.

Suddenly the bright light dazzled his eyes and the projector turned on. The whole hall issued the sound of “Hush”, Lu Mingfei raised his arm to cover his face, said in his heart, “Damn!”

How did he get to the next stage before he had spoken? Uncle projectionist got the time wrong? Lu Mingfei’s eyes adapted to the strong light and suddenly saw Xu Yanyan and Xu Miaomiao standing on his left side like two bowling pins[QA1] .

“What are you doing up here?” Lu Mingfei lowered his voice, said to Xu Yanyan.

“Extras.” Xu Yanyan showed a very innocent expression.

Lu Mingfei looked around and suddenly realized that there was a huge letter “L” on his left side. The projector threw characters on the screen.

The audience was still hushing. Lu Mingfei could not help but run to a few meters away from the screen to see.

It’s a line of words, “Chen Wenwen, Lve, Yu!”

He didn’t understand the two strange words, but he had a hunch that something was wrong.

“Stand back! Stand back!” Xu Yanyan whispered to him, “It’s not a sentence without you.”

“Sentence?” Lu Mingfei went to see the line of words, at the same time the corner of his eye swept to Zhao Menghua, who was holding a large bunch of crimson roses, surrounded by several good brothers and jumped onto the stage.

This time, Lu Mingfei understood. His body got cool down from the fingertips inch by inch to his heart, until the depth of the skull, until those still sore joints because of running too much way for the dandelion. Xu Yanyan and Xu Miaomiao are two “o”. He is the lowercase I, which is perfect. “Chen Wenwen, iLoveYou.”

It’s even the coquettish lowercase I. With the head of Lu Mingfei, he can’t think about such a romantic approach even he runs out of his mind. But Zhao Menghua is more clear than him, and his English is better than Lu Mingfei. Having an English tutor since childhood, shouldn’t coquettish lowercase “I” be a piece of cake for him?

Lu Mingfei was looking at Chen Wenwen, Chen Wenwen was looking at Zhao Menghua. As if there were summer dew in her eyes, flowing down. When she was sitting by the river with Lu Mingfei before, she was so melancholy and silent, but now she doesn’t. Lu Mingfei could see happiness in her eyes. Lu Mingfei felt petrified, and he will become fragments piece by piece. Suddenly he thought of the bundle of dandelions in his bag. He came running all the way, are there only bare sticks inside?

“Go back! Go back! It can’t be a sentence without you!” Someone shouted under the stage.

Lu Mingfei slowly walked back to the screen and stood on the copy paper. He looked down at no one, so the lowercase “I” became quite listless.

“Today is supposed to be our literary club meeting, but I’m taking this opportunity,” Zhao Menghua said loudly. “We are going to be separate, and I don’t want to regret. I want to say to Chen Wenwen…It’s all on the screen… I’ll make my decision! Otherwise, none of us can be together in the future. If I liked a person for three years and no one knows, shouldn’t that be awful?”

“Good! Nice one boss!” Xu Yanyan and Xu Miaomiao clapped their hands, and so did Zhao Menghua’s good brothers.

“Go on stage! Leading girl! Go on stage!” Zhao Menghua had clearly prepared for everything, the audience began to cheer.

A beam of spotlights shined on Chen Wenwen. Chen Wenwen stood up with an extreme white, almost transparent dress like an angel. She shuffled onto the stage, blushing so red like people could squeeze tomato sauce. Zhao’s good brother surrounded her and asked, in the voice of typical young actors in a supporting role, “Yes or no? Zhao Menghua is a good guy!”

Lu Mingfei looked at Chen Wenwen and her lips. He could hear no other sound, and the silence was like death to him. Only one voice could break it.

Chen Wenwen.

“I DO like… you, too.” Chen Wenwen looked at Zhao Menghua and said quietly.

The silence broke, as if thunder had broken through the air, lightning had shot straight into the heart of heaven, while the rain had rustled down.

In noise, Lu Mingfei heart a cry. He looked up and saw the “little princess” covered her face and ran out. After three years of enmity with Su Xiaoqiang, it suddenly occurred to him that they were quite the same, and he wanted to pat Su Xiaoqiang on the shoulder and comfort her. But he is the immovable “I”.

Everyone ran up around Chen Wenwen and Zhao Menghua as if they were guests at a wedding. Lu Mingfei thought that everyone knew that, only Su Xiaoqiang and he were living in the dark. Probably the matter that he likes Chen Wenwen was seen through by everybody, so no one would like to tell him.

“Hey, that’s stupid.” Lu Mingfei said to himself, bitter had been rushed to his nostrils.

The music was loud and the screen showed that Eve breaks the sound barrier and crosses the sky with wall-e. It was a little girl who had to use all her powers to save her little lover, and they ended up cuddling with the music of an old romantic movie. Really touching, it suits well with the current situation: Zhao Menghua put his hand on Chen Wenwen’s shoulder, Chen Wenwen bowed her head on Zhao Menghua.

Uncle projectionist came in from the side door, holding in his mouth the fake cigarette that Lu Mingfei had given him. He snapped his fingers again and looked down 45 degrees to give Lu Mingfei a thumbs-up. It’s like, “Did I get it dude?”

“Uncle, does your brain went something wrong?” Lu Mingfei wanted to shake him by the collar.

But he had no strength now, so he squatted down slowly against the screen. Anyway, no one was paying attention to that “iLoveYou” anymore, and he became a lowercase “e” that no one cares.

“Isn’t that surprising?” Zhao Menghua’s brother said very frankly.

“It’s not surprising, I know you are doing this. I just don’t want to say that because of your shameless friends.” Chen Wenwen said happily and shyly, shaking Zhao Menghua’s hand.

Really, everyone knows that, including Chen Wenwen herself. Lu Mingfei hung his head and walked quietly toward the door of the screening hall. On the screen behind him, Eve was resting beside Wall-E. The music was sweet and touching, Chen Wenwen was still Eve, but he’s not Wall-E, he was nothing.

Oh no, he’s a little man that played an important role in the love between the male and female main characters.

Scene 1: The Gate of Cassel (5)

“Suspicious, isn’t it? Your parents did not go home for 6 years, recommend you to go to an American college suddenly, your GPA is just average… No, it was terrible, but the college awarded you a big scholarship. You talked nonsense during the interview, but the interviewer said you answered it too well. Compared with these, I know who you secretly love is really nothing.”

“Yeah, only Aunt and Uncle don’t doubt it. They think my parents can do anything. They’ve been asking me all the way how to get my brother there.”

“Please me! Please me then I’ll tell you, like… What was Chen Wenwen thinking…” Again the evil nature of the little witch stirred.

“You know?”

“Women’s intuition tells me…”

“What?”

“She doesn’t like you.”

“Piss off!”

Lu Mingfei didn’t believe it. He remembered that afternoon, there were only two people in the classroom, Chen Wenwen and him. He was cleaning the blackboard. Chen Wenwen was wearing a white cotton dress, sneakers and white socks. Outside the window, the Boston ivy hanging down. It was an evening between the spring and summer, especially quiet. Chen Wenwen suddenly turned her head and asked Lu Mingfei, do you want to join our literary club?

Lu Mingfei feels as if he had petrified, his heart is bouncing. The flowers and plants outside the window grow madly, the setting sun falls. As if cicadas’ chirp accelerates a hundred times, time slips away from his fingers, and the gaze between them is eternal.

“Just kidding. Here, I’ll give you some advice. Have you sent any flowers?” Nuo Nuo asked.

“Does foxtail grass count?” Lu Mingfei turned excited and began to talk nonsense.

“Have you ever seen a movie?

“Sparking Red Star. I was sitting next to her at the school’s revolutionary education show.”

“Her birthday?

“October 10th.”

“Any birthday present?

“She took my pen and wrote back to the boy who sent her the card. She didn’t give it back to me. The next day she said it was a gift… “

“Can you be any less promising?

“I don’t think so either.”

“You’re a disgrace to Cassel College!” Nuo Nuo yelled in an angry tone, “Come on, sister will educate you. First of all, all girls are to be chased! You do not take the initiative, but think about the initiative of girls? Secondly, for girls, the most important thing is nothing but happiness. Have you tried to give Chen Wenwen happiness?”

“Happiness?” Lu Mingfei stunned.

“For example, suppose, just suppose, Chen Wenwen likes you very much, but you have no feelings for her. But one day you failed the exam, depressed. Suddenly you see Chen Wenwen driving a Ferrari to pick you up in public. She touches your hair said, don’t worry, you can handle this next time. Do you feel like you’re bursting with happiness? Even if you don’t have feelings for her, will you immediately follow her?”

“Right now! Never hesitate! Give me a dog rope and ran with her!” Lu Mingfei answered firmly.

“Worthless! This seems too cheap, you need to twist a few more to show your position!”

“Senior sister… What shall I do?” Lu Mingfei had great sincerity on his senior.

“Just do it! Tell everyone you like her. Say it out loud. You bet your man’s dignity and his future, can you understand girls? No girl will really hate a boy who is honest and bold enough to express his feelings to her. Even if she doesn’t accept it, she will remember you.

“What if she doesn’t?”

“Fly to America with your splendid memories of lost love.”

“Sounds so sad… “

“It’s not easy to love someone, you have to kill a blood road from ten thousand armies! Be the last Zergling, ran through the fire of countless dragoons with the last point of health left to wield a game-changing claw! It could happen if you die on the way, but a dog that doesn’t come under fire isn’t a good dog!” Nuo Nuo said.

Lu Mingfei was stunned and felt the murderous feeling in her words. He suddenly saw her cold pretty face. The girl likes a steel knife… Now she brandished her knife, a cut in the middle of his heart, blood splattering. At this moment, Lu Mingfei made the boldest decision in 18 years of life, to be the dog rushed to the gunfire. In the last three months before graduation, he will tell Chen Wenwen that he liked her for three years. No matter how weak this last claw, no matter if it can break through the girl’s defence line, but he was determined to be a good dog!

“Understood!” He said.

“Remember to give flowers. Oh, if you don’t know what she likes, just dark red roses that every girl will like; having background music; the most important thing is to say it in front of everyone, this is your courage!” Nuo Nuo said, “Good luck, young brother!”

“Yes, Ma’am!” Lu Mingfei imagined that a commanding lady is giving orders to him as a pawn.

“But… When you succeed, the path of Cassel College will be closed to you forever!”

After this sentence, Nuo Nuo directly went offline and left no chance for Lu Mingfei to answer.

Lu Mingfei looked up and breathed a long sigh of relief. He was eager to have a try, thinking that if this bold declaration succeeds, it is nothing for not going to the United States. It’s just he shall never see Nuo Nuo again, a little regret. Lu Mingfei felt that he would miss Nuo Nuo. Before her, there had never been a girl entering his world so fiercely, not even Chen Wenwen.

He looked at the gray and motionless cat face icon on the screen and suddenly felt that it was magic. At the moment of his successful confession, Cassel college, Professor Guderian and Nuo Nuo would disappear from the world like bubbles.

In a suite of the Regent Hotel, Nuo Nuo was sipping coffee lightly.

Her QQ was not turned off on her apple laptop screen but just turned to stealth mode. Lu Mingfei’s last message came, which was simply “Thank you”.

In another dialogue window, the person whose ID is “Sonic” said, “What are you doing? Teach him how to show his love to a girl? If the ‘S’ level gave up the gate of Cassel for love, the principle would go mad!”

“Are you funny? I was only teasing him.” Nuo Nuo wrinkled her delicate nose and smiled coldly. “How could such an expression be successful? Chen Wenwen is the kind of girl who is very artistic. If she likes something, she will accept it. If she doesn’t like it, no matter how much you give her, she won’t pay attention to it. Music, roses and saying I love you loudly? Just kidding!”

“Can you be more immoral?”

“No,” she shrugged. “I have to admit this is the most immoral thing I’ve ever done.”

“Why bully a freshman?”

“Freshman? He’s an “S” level! You and I are only ‘A’ level. If we do not take the opportunity to bully him, there’ll be no chance when he enters the college.” Nuo Nuo said.

“Hope nothing’s wrong. What if Chen Wenwen was as stuffy Lu Mingfei and liked Lu Mingfei for three years but do not want to say to him, you’ll just mess up everything.”

Nuo Nuo sticking her tongue out. “Won’t it be so bad?”

“The Student Union needs people like this, the only ‘S’ level, who must never fall into the hands of the Lionheart!” Said “Sonic”.

“Nuo Nuo.” Ye Sheng pushed the door from outside to poke his head in. “Professor Guderian asked you to come and discuss something together.”

“Oh.” Nuo Nuo put on her cotton slippers and trotted out with her coffee cup.

Outside, Professor Guderian, Ye Sheng and Aki sat around a coffee table with dignified expressions. There was a printed document freshly.

“Nuo Nuo, I have a mission. The thing here could only depend on you,” Professor Guderian said, picking up the document. “the college has just faxed a resume of a Russian candidate who seems to have a fairly good lineage. I have to fly to Russia right now, and Lu Mingfei is in your hand.”

“Me?” Nuo Nuo stunned, “What about Ye Sheng and Aki?”

“The ‘Kui Men Project’ is running ahead of schedule. The principal is about to visit China and Professor Maans told us to sign up to Sichuan Province immediately.” Ye Sheng said, “Aki and I need a little more time to do cooperative training.”

“Are you in such a hurry? Nuo Nuo puckered up her mouth. At this time, she was still like a child.

“When you’re about to perform a task, you will realize that you can’t wait for an hour or a minute,” Ye said and patted Nuo Nuo’s shoulder. “Sometimes missing a point of time is like missing a lifetime.”

“You should say this to Aki and say that’s why I asked you to marry me.” Nuo Nuo said.

Aki blushed with shame.

“Well, how to deal with Lu Mingfei then?” Nuo Nuo looked at Professor Guderian.

Professor Guderian scratched his head. “My personal idea is… Even if you kidnap him, you have to bring him to America!”

Lu Mingfei thought that Nuo Nuo is an angel who can bring good luck. Shortly after Nuo Nuo was taken offline, Chen Wenwen suddenly spoke in the group, and those invisible guys have jumped out around the Muse to beep, one by one with their flying literary talent, not like suffering the nightmare of the final exam at all.

“What about having a party before graduation?” Chen Wenwen proposed.

A group of people cheered, and Lu Mingfei was mixed in the middle. Chen Wenwen’s proposal won’t be opposed to the literature club. Zhao Menghua joked that Chen Wenwen is like Liu Bei 1) of the literature club, because she is absolutely attractive to men.

“Party? Not interested, I’m losing weight recently.” Su Xiaoqiang said coldly.

Nobody expected Su Xiaoqiang to condescend to join the literary club. The President of the tennis club and billiards club were both admirers of Su Xiaoqiang and invited her, but Su Xiaoqiang didn’t pay attention to any of them and joined the rival literary club. The object of Su Xiaoqiang was not Chen Wenwen but Zhao Menghua. The “Little Fairy” was explicit and blatant. When she paid for every girls’ pizza, she suddenly stood up, holding a glass of beer said, I paid everyone’s bill is to say that I like Zhao Menghua. If you like him too just come, no matter how many people!

Commanding!

“If you don’t like the party, we can book a cinema hall to see a movie.” Chen Wenwen said.

Lu Mingfei suddenly moved, Nuo Nuo’s words emerged beside his ear. A small cinema hall? Oh, god, isn’t that for me? That sounds like a great place for his confession!

“What movie?” Someone asked.

“General Mobilization of Robot 2).” Chen Wenwen said.

“Wall-E? Good! Let’s bring some food in.” Zhao Menghua, the English fanatic, never watches Chinese movies and speaks only English names for blockbusters.

“I’ll get popcorn and coke, and I don’t care about the rest!” “Little Fairy” exclaimed proudly.

“Then we are a perfect match. I’ll get to eat popcorn and drink coke.” Lu Mingfei can’t help to say garbage words again.

“Puff! Who is matchable for you?” “Little Fairy” expressed two hundred percent of disdain.

Everyone was full of gossip and high spirits. Before graduation, the club arranged to watch a love cartoon. It sounds like a great memory.

It’s a love cartoon! The key is to have love! There seem to be flowers grow out of Lu Mingfei’s heart.

Like somehow allusion, Chen Wenwen chose Wall-E. The main character of that movie is a little dusty robot Wall-E. He is a garbage collector and falls in love with EVE, a robot girl as white as a little princess. Lu Mingfei was embarrassed to say that he was actually moved to tears when he saw the last scene, in which Wall-E was crushed into a pile of scrap iron by the evil captain robot. EVE rushed to find parts to save him and broke through the sound barrier with Wall-E in her arms.

That is probably loving, even the small robot picking up garbage deserve to have love! Lu Mingfei felt super touching.

“Lu Mingfei will go to buy a ticket with me, everyone else shall give the money to Lu Mingfei.” Chen Wenwen said.

People agreed, Lu Mingfei‘s main task in the club is to go to collect money and running errands, which’s quite familiar for him.

But this time Chen Wenwen said she would go with him.

It’s the same road. But if you walk with some people, it will be too short to take steps. For the other, it will be too long to walk.

Lu Mingfei and Chen Wenwen walked along the cobblestone road along the river. Every day after school he will walk the road, but he suddenly found that this road is really short and abhorrent. Why the government doesn’t spend more money and make the pedestrian street fifty kilometres long?

“Which school do you want to apply to?” Chen Wenwen asked.

They had just gone to the cinema to book a room, and then he accompanied Chen Wenwen to buy a bag of bluebells. Lu Mingfei looked at the price of roses by the way, it seems that it is not expensive, and he can buy ninety-nine roses with his pocket money. Now Chen Wenwen carrying a bag of bluebells and walking home with him, and Lu Mingfei knew for the first time that Chen Wenwen’s home is not far from his home. Chen Wenwen was wearing the white cotton dress she had worn when she was in school. It smells good.

“Whatever, as long as I can pass.” Said Lu Mingfei. He was embarrassed to say that the Cassel College said he had passed the interview.

“Will you report local school?”

Lu Mingfei tittered, thinking that Chen Wenwen was quietly asking him where he would go after the exam. Hum!

“Anywhere, as long as the school has many classmates right now.”

Chen Wenwen smiled silently and said “yep” in a low voice.

Two people were walking quietly heads down. Lu Mingfei was counting steps happily, he felt between him and Chen Wenwen there’s subtle tacit understanding.

“Well, why do you look so shy?” Someone asked darkly.

Lu Mingfei was startled to look up, the girl opposite him pulled down the huge sunglasses on her face and rolled over eyes. She put her hands to make a megaceros’ style and yelled to Lu Mingfei loudly, “Hey! Hey!”

Lu Mingfei knew why Nuo Nuo has the feeling of intimacy like an acquaintance. She purely wanted to show to Chen Wenwen. He had learned the rules of the little witch.

“Your friend?” Chen Wenwen is embarrassed slightly, felt pressure under the atmosphere of the little princess Nuo Nuo.

“Uh-huh.” Lu Mingfei muttered.

“Hey! What a coincidence!” Nuo Nuo jumped in front of Chen Wenwen,” This is Chen Wenwen, right?

“How do you know my name?” Chen Wenwen was surprised.

“He said it… “Nuo Nuo suddenly stopped and stared at Lu Mingfei.” By the way, do you still owe me an ice cream?”

Blackmail! This is plain blackmail!

But as long as Nuo Nuo doesn’t talk nonsense at the moment, he could do anything.

Lu Mingfei quickly paid, “What flavour do you want?”

“Vanilla with strawberry jam.” Nuo Nuo took off her baseball cap and combed her long dark red hair.

Lu Mingfei could only pay for them. The three of them were walking along the river with ice cream. Flos Sephora flowers fell on Chen Wenwen’s white skirt and Nuo Nuo’s baseball cap. Lu Mingfei quietly followed behind the two girls, because Nuo Nuo appeared to steal his thunder, now he has nothing to do.

“Did Lu Mingfei say a lot of bad things about me?” Chen Wenwen asked.

“No, he said he liked literature very much, so he joined the literature club.”

“Oh, you are his junior high school classmate?”

“Elementary school, I have been studying in the United States and came back recently.” Nuo Nuo turned to Lu Mingfei. “Do you remember the cirrus on the wall of our school? That day I go back to see and it had climbed to the roof!”

Lu Mingfei nodded his head, thinking that the ice cream was worth it. Nuo Nuo is an honest businessman, she described the scene comes to life.

“Are you an immigrant? “Chen Wenwen asked.

“No, I have a Chinese passport. I’m just going to school. I’m a sophomore this year.”

“Did you skip the class? Lu Mingfei is only in grade 12.”

“Oh, we are at different grade, I am his senior sister.” Nuo Nuo made her lie fast. She seems to be a professional liar, “Right, Lu Mingfei?”

“Yes! Senior sister!” Lu Mingfei said seriously.

Nuo Nuo laughed like a flower.

They finally got separate at the fork in the road. Lu Mingfei and Chen Wenwen continued to walk, and Nuo Nuo went to the other side. Lu Mingfei looked at the figure of Nuo Nuo skipping away, felt that the girl is a little unreal and left him feeling that will disappear at any time.

In these two days, Lu Mingze was very unhappy because the “Sunset Mark” is not always online, which let him became extremely anxious. So he occupied the notebook more time, let Lu Mingfei had no chance to use it. Lu Mingfei knew that he admired his lucky dog cousin and he wanted to talk to someone. Lu Mingfei also wanted to listen to him… He just doesn’t have time to sneak into the internet bar.

Aunt was chanting that Lu Mingze cannot play computer instead to study and let Lu Mingfei buy tomorrow’s milk as usual. Lu Mingfei went out and heard Lu Mingze suddenly got impatient somehow and fought with Aunt.

He did not go upstairs but walked up to the top floor. On top of it is the roof with purring air conditioning. The stairway to the roof feels like a horror movie, there are cardboard boxes, two broken motors and discarded sofas and wooden tea tables, all dusty and the space between them are too small to let people stand. An iron gate at the end of it that said: “Roof closed.” Lu Mingfei stepped on the garbage skillfully like a light kangaroo, and he saw after the inch shadow of the iron gate, there were thousands of stars.

Lu Mingfei went out through the gap between the iron gate and stood in the starlight. He took a deep breath and looked at the city under the night sky.

This is his secret manor. Here, he is free to enjoy the different smells of wind, sky, spring and autumn coming to the city. Sometimes it is flos sophorae, sometimes it is leaves, sometimes it is the sweet smell of pineapple selling in the street below.

He sat on the edge of the roof as if facing a precipice. He felt dangerous and light, like a bird that flies very high depends on the wind.

The city lights kept on and hard skyline had sunk down in the lamplight. Skyscrapers in the business district looked like square cages made by light. Far from the roof, there was a wide lake. Beside it, the surge of cars was on the highway and lights merged into a stream of light. Lu Mingfei felt like each point in the flow of light is a live firefly. They are trapped in the curved, slender in the highway so they can only run hard forward to look for export.

  1. Liu Bei: Chinese three kingdoms dynasty king. Famous for recruiting all kinds of talents people and generals.
  2. It’s just Wall-E, but Chen Wenwen speaks Chinese here and I can only make up a title.

Scene 1: The Gate of Cassel (4)

“Mr. Lu Mingfei? Green tea or black tea?” The dapper waiter went to the table and questioned Lu Mingfei, who was caught in the middle by his aunt and uncle.

“At what price?” Uncle showed the custom of visit high places frequently.

“Professor Guderian booked the presidential suite, so they’re all free.”

“American schools are rich!” Aunt was instantly awed by Cassel College.

“Ding”. The elevator opened its door and a strapping old man of grizzled hair strode toward the table that leans on a window. His left side was Ye Sheng and his right side was Aki Shutoku. A handsome boy and a beauty, majestic. He came up without saying a word but hold the hand of Lu Mingfei, “Hello! Lu Mingfei!”

“Hello… Professor… Guderian …” Lu Mingfei was a bit embarrassed before the outpouring of enthusiasm. “You speak good Chinese.”

Professor Guderian’s eyes lit up and he scratched his head happily. “I learned from CCTV news, our college popularizes the Chinese, everyone knows that China will become the most prosperous place in the world!” He looked at Lu Mingfei with flashing eyes and soliciting expressions. “You don’t need English to join us, the whole school students speak Chinese.”

Lu Mingfei blinked. What does he mean? Speak Chinese? No need to speak English? In his life, there is no bright spot, maybe only the TOFEL transcript can be counted. If the only bright spot is ignored, why does Cassel College want him? On this first meeting Professor Guderian’s face, he can only simply see “overjoyed” expression.

“Hello, Professor Gu. I’m Lu Mingfei’s uncle.” Uncle was unwilling to be ignored and squeezed between Professor Guderian and Lu Mingfei.

Unable to remember Guderian, he neatly simplified it to “Professor Gu”.

“Your uncle and nephew don’t look like each other at all!” Professor Guderian shook hands with Uncle.

This time it was uncle’s turn to be embarrassed. Although Professor Guderian was very grand and living in the presidential suite, he seems to be a little out of line.

Ye Sheng pulled Professor Guderian’s sleeve at the back, and the three men sat across the table.

“Let’s have breakfast first.” Professor Guderian was holding knife and fork, but his sights had never leave Lu Mingfei.

Lu Mingfei felt that his eyes were like those of a gluttonous person looking at a roast chicken, full of expectation.

The expensive breakfast consisted of salmon rolls and freshly squeezed lemon juice, and the sterling silver cutlery, which was quite imposing, all at once dispelled Uncle’s displeasure, for there was no shame on doesn’t look like his nephew, anyway. The guests and guests enjoyed themselves.

Professor Guderian praised Lu Mingfei for his excellent performance in the interview. Uncle was also happy to say that he knew Cassel College was an American noble school when he saw it. This atmosphere made it impossible for Chinese universities to compare with it.

Ye Sheng made full preparations and took out a copy of the formal college license registered in the United States Department of Education for Aunt’s viewing, and took out a photo album to introduce that this is the library of Cassel College, this is the sports hall of Cassel College, this is the concert hall of Cassel College… The college style in the photo was ancient and elegant, like a completely renovated old castle.

Another photo shows Ye Sheng himself on a sailboard, racing with thousands of sails behind him. Ye Sheng said it was the college’s annual regatta, and Cassel had beaten the University of Chicago for the third year in a row.

Aunt was also dumped, praised that our Mingfei must a blessing in previous lives to enter your school.

Lu Mingfei had a strange feeling. This seems to marry a girl; he is a daughter that will waste money to stay at home but can earn betrothal gift when married. The male side is very anxious and the girl’s family is also happy to go with the current.

He took his courage out. “Professor Guderian… What does your college see in me?”

“Comprehensive quality! Great potential!” Professor Guderian did not seem to joke at all. “We admire you so much that we not only want to admit you but also give you a scholarship. I have decided to allocate $36,000 a year from my name for the scholarship, enough for you to finish four years of college!”

Aunt and Uncle gasped at the same time.

“Professor Gu… This…… What are the strings attached? Something like paying back the money or… We must make it clear.” Uncle felt wrong.

“No! Never! The scholarship is to reward your nephew because he is excellent!” Professor Guderian is very strict.

“That sounds so fake.” Uncle shook his head.

“There are other reasons, of course. Lu Mingfei’s parents, who happen to be our honorary alumni, have donated money to the college. Under the same conditions, we will give priority to the children of our alumni.”

Lu Mingfei suddenly looked up. There’s like a little bunny jumping. He has forgotten how long he has not received news from his parents, and every time his mother wrote a letter is just to tell him to take care of himself and study hard, all the same. Lu Mingfei sometimes felt that those letters were perfunctory to him like his parents did not care about him.

“They care about you.” Professor Guderian said: “I haven’t met them either, but I’ve heard that they’ve been working on very important projects all over the world over the years. I have a picture of them here, oh, yes, and a letter from your mother to the college about you.”

He took a photograph out of his pocket and put it in front of Lu Mingfei. The photo shows the garden in summer, the Cassel college in the setting sun in the distance, and the vine wall nearby. It’s dark and transparent green. A man and a woman are walking in the vine wall hand in hand. The man is in a loose white shirt and flares, with a pair of plank wooden slipper. The woman wears white cotton clothes.

Lu Mingfei put out his finger and gently touched the two faces on the scene. The handsome man and the beautiful woman were his parents, but they were so far away from him, in the corner of the world where he would never go. His nose was a little sour. The picture showed a man and a woman looking at each other’s faces with a warm smile. It was obviously a two-person world, and they probably forgot about having a child together.

Aunt made a pointed comment. “Two old people but very romantic!”

Professor Guderian handed Lu Mingfei another letter, very short, typed, probably an email:

Dear Principle Ange,

I haven’t contacted you for a long time. I hope you are as healthy as before.

We should not see each other for a long time. Recent research has made new progress and we can’t leave.

There is something I would like to ask you. My child, Lu Mingfei, is over 18 years old. He is a smart child and his grades may not be so good, but we both believe that he can do something. If it’s possible, please Cassel College provides help on receiving this child.

Can’t say to him personally, I have to ask you to convey for me that daddy and mommy love him.

Sincerely,

Jovany

Lu Mingfei read the letter silently and did not speak for a long time.

Professor Guderian cleared his throat and suddenly looked at Lu Mingfei’s eyes, with a very affectionate tone and not quite standard pronunciation, “MingFei, daddy and mommy love you.”

Lu Mingfei stared and dumbed down.

“The principal insisted that I must take your parents’ greetings to you. He CARES about you, too.” Said Professor Guderian.

This awkward conversion made Lu Mingze can’t help but laugh, the same as Aunt and Uncle. Lu Mingfei’s mother Jovany said that sentence so gentle, it moves people to tears, but it was told by a white-bearded old man, then there is a burst of dislocation. Ye Sheng and Aki Shutoku also shook their heads and smiled bitterly. Professor Guderian put out his arm and patted Lu Mingfei’s shoulder vigorously.

The atmosphere at the table was suddenly harmonious.

“I’m going to the bathroom.” Lu Mingfei stood up.

Lu Mingfei backed against the bathroom door. He was quiet for a while then tears flew down silently.

The people all laughed, but he saw nothing funny about this.

In fact, it is very touching. It’s been so many years, he grew to 18 years old, no one EVER CARES what he thinks, no one EVER CARES what he does, again and again on the way home from school to watch the students were picked up by the car. Looking back at the dust of the cars and thinking that he should say maybe no one in the world loves him?

“Mingfei, daddy and mommy love you.”

Lu Ming did not believe that when he saw it on the paper, he actually did not feel anything, but it’s told from Professor Guderian’s mouth, he suddenly believed.

“I love you” is something you have to speak by mouth. It’s not the same as writing it down on paper. Especially to a wilted child who lacks love.

Lu Mingfei felt like it’s silly too, but the sadness in his heart cannot be eliminated, so he had to hide in the bathroom. He leaned on the door to crouch down and drew circles on the ceramic tile. He will wait until the tear did not flow again and he can go out.

At this time a pair of dark purple running shoes appeared in front of him.

Lu Mingfei looked up in surprise. In front of him stood a girl with running shoes, a pair of skinny jeans, a small white vest, a short blue shirt with vertical stripes and a baseball cap on the top of her head.

Lu Mingfei felt something wrong, but he could not understand so he can only blink.

The tall and bright girl looked sideways at Lu Mingfei. The silver four-leaf clover pendant on her earlobe was rickety, and the diamonds embedded in it were dazzling.

“This is the women’s washroom.” The girl slowly revealed the problem to Lu Mingfei.

Lu Mingfei returned to the table with his head down, and the pretty tall girl followed him with a cold face.

“Aye? Nuo Nuo, I thought you ran out to play.” Professor Guderian stood up, “Introduction, grade two student Chen Motong, Chinese, our student examiner; this is your new schoolmate, Lu Mingfei.”

“Nuo Nuo?” Lu Mingfei stunned, the name sounds familiar.

“I had a meal in a roadside restaurant last night and my stomach was not very well. I was in the bathroom before.” Chen Motong sat next to the wine.

“Why didn’t you ask me to join you? I want to eat that kind of thing called roadside restaurant very much.” Professor Guderian was sorry. “I’ve heard about it in the news.”

“You know that from the news about gutter oil?” Chen Motong picked up her knife and fork and took the last salmon roll from Ye Sheng’s plate.

“I have one more. Give it to you, too.” Aki Shutoku forked her salmon roll to Chen Motong.

“You work together as a couple. Why don’t you get married?” Chen Motong mumbled, her mouth was stuffed with salmon rolls.

Ye Sheng and Aki Shutoku looked at each other with a little reluctance and embarrassment.

Lu Mingfei was very grateful that the girl did not say his embarrassment, but after she appeared at the table, the atmosphere immediately dissipated. Chen Motong sat at the window of the position and looked no one. She’s just smearing butter on the bread. The sun rendered her long hair to an extremely dark red, like wine.

This was the first ever time Lu Mingfei had met a girl like this. Not like Su Xiaoqiang, she did not care so much about the way others looked at her. Either like Chen Wenwen, so delicate and silent that she avoided the eyes of others. Chen Motong looks like a proud princess who doesn’t care about anything. Even when she looks at you directly, she makes people feel that she doesn’t really have you in her eyes.

Uncle was peeking at the wrist of Chen Motong. Lu Mingfei knew what he is looking at, it’s the silvery OMEGA watch on her wrist that inserts diamond.

“Do you mind if I eat yours?” Chen Motong took the napkin to wipe her mouth and stared at Lu Mingfei.

Lu Mingfei had to nod his head. It was not easy that such a proud princess would look at his eyes and talk to him… For a salmon roll.

“Nuo Nuo, be polite and take care of your new schoolmate.” Said Professor Guderian.

“He has no appetite,” Chen Motong glanced at Lu Mingfei. “You see, he’s so perturbed that he might go to the wrong washroom.”

Lu Mingfei stunned, Chen Motong spit out her tongue and took the whole breakfast plate to her side.

“Oh? Really? Mingfei, you still have problems?” Professor Guderian looked into Lu Mingfei’s eyes and said, “The opportunity to enter Cassel college is very rare! You must cherish!”

“I… I have to think about it.” Lu Mingfei bowed his head.

Uncle, Aunt and Lu Mingze were silly and began to doubt the mind of Lu Mingfei. What else did he think? That’s a pie that all people want, he should open his mouth to catch it.

Professor Guderian was very nervous, “The college can do anything for you!”

“No,” said Lu Mingfei, shaking his head. “I… “

“It’s a girlfriend.” Chen Motong was turning her fork with Lu Mingfei’s salmon roll. “Let’s see, white… Long-haired… Very gentle… Quiet…… 1.65 meters tall… Classmate girl. Well, that’s about it.”

She looked out of the window and chewed as if nobody were there.

Lu Mingfei shivered. Lu Mingze’s ears became upright immediately, Uncle and Aunt also cast suspicious sights. There was a sudden silence on the table, except for the clear sound of Chen Motong chewing the salmon roll.

“Nuo Nuo, stop that now.” Aki Shutoku said.

“Just kidding.” Chen Motong pushed the empty plate forward and showed her bright white teeth. She threw a beautiful but unkind smile at Lu Mingfei. “We are not familiar with each other, aren’t we? Even if he had a girlfriend, I wouldn’t know who that was.”

Everyone exhaled in unison, and Professor Guderian was relieved.

“Our Mingfei not going to fall in love, right?” Aunt was quite gratified, Lu Mingfei did not hide from her secretly looking for a girlfriend, this let her feel that her leadership in the home has not been shaken. And she also felt that no one should be so blind to love Lu Mingfei. All the schoolgirls are princesses in the home, why him?

“Who would love me?” Lu Mingfei chewed and chewed with asparagus in his mouth so that his mouth was always moving. By this, he didn’t have to pretend to be anything.

“Study life always needs to go first,” Uncle said.

“You’re updating your base to level three.” Chen Motong said of a sudden.

Lu Mingfei’s heart trembled and his asparagus fell onto the plate.

In the dead of night, Lu Mingfei was sitting in front of his laptop, hanging two things on the screen at the same time, QQ and StarCraft.

He was complained by Uncle and Aunt about a whole day, said he was completely ungrateful and left Professor Guderian there and said he should consider this.

“What else do you want? You want to go to Harvard?” Aunt finally snorted disdainfully out of her nostrils.

He was guessed correctly by Chen Motong. It’s because of Chen Wenwen.

Lu Mingfei read a StarCraft novel, called “The Bloody Totem” 1), said that a giant robot fighting on the alien planet while chatting with an earth girl. The “Godzilla” giant robot shooting Zergling under leaden clouds, while talking with the little girl warmly.

One day Godzilla told the little girl that I was going to die. My battery was running out of juice.

The little girl said you were funny. You thought you were really a big robot? If you don’t want to talk about it, just don’t. See you tomorrow.

Godzilla said it was nice talking to you.

Then it was forced to disconnect. On a distant planet, a grumpy Zergling jumps onto the wreckage of a giant robot and tears its circuits with claws.

Lu Mingfei feels like he is a giant robot, and Chen Wenwen is the little girl. Sometimes Chen Wenwen will talk about her secrets with Lu Mingfei, which made him happy and replied to a variety of lovely expressions to show he is listening carefully. But Chen Wenwen will never find why Lu Mingfei did so, nor why he hanging on QQ to wait for her. One day the circuit of this giant robot was broken, he will also don’t know if Chen Wenwen will feel sad.

Lu Mingfei thought about and felt sad. There is a kind of feeling of battery fluid flowing from his heart and circuit crackling around him.

The chatting group of the literary club was quiet. If Chen Wenwen is absent, their literature will never be discussed. People talk about the beauty of literature, mainly because of the beauty of Muse, Muse wears a white cotton dress sitting in the sun, her hair fluttering, which is the beauty of literature.

In the StarCraft channel, Old tang was teaching secrets with a group of people, since he defeated the Lu Mingfei, he boasted himself as first place in the channel.

The icon of big face cat was flashing, “Nuo Nuo” went online.

Lu Mingfei hesitated. “Is that you?”

“Ah, Chen Motong.” Nuo Nuo’s answer seems lazy, “There is nothing to do so I come to play.”

“How do you know my ID?

“Human flesh search. Hey. you are using such a girly ID ‘mingming’ …… and ‘Sunset Marks’… So weird.”

“How could you search for that? Keep it a secret. I just use it to play with my brother.”

“Kidding. Norma found it. It’s a piece of cake for her. You’re good at StarCraft.”

“Nah, I lost to you.”

“I lost, Norma and I played together, and the two of us controlled the base. At last, I knew you were at level 3 because Norma had secretly opened the map and seen it.”

“Cheating kills the whole family!” Lu Mingfei typed this sentence.

Just casually, this word in the group was said by everyone, no one really ever took that seriously.

“I’m the only one in my family.” Nuo Nuo replied.

Lu Mingfei froze for a moment. “I’m sorry.”

“Sorry about that? “Nuo Nuo answered very insipidly, “Play a game?”

“Not in the mood.”

“Lovelorn?

Lu Mingfei trembled slightly. Nuo Nuo, likes a little witch, had seen through his everything so that he had no place to live.

“Not yet… I have even no girlfriend and can’t be brokenhearted certainly, what do you want sis?” he typed.

“Quite sweet on calling sister,” said Nuo Nuo, throwing a grin. “Come on, tell me what’s going on, and I might be able to help.”

“What are you going to do? You don’t even know her.”

“I DO don’t know Chen Wenwen.” The little witch Nuo Nuo replied very quickly.

“How much do you really know?” Suddenly he was frightened.

“Too much.”

“What…… Who are you?” Lu Mingfei’s hand was shaking a little.

  1. The Bloody Totem: It’s basically a Chinese StarCraft story. Because the relevant chapter is short I’ll just translate it here.

First Day:

Little girl: Hi, shall we talk?

Godzilla: Ok, I’m free now.

Little girl: Where are you now?

Godzilla: Planet of Lance.

Little girl: Oh. It must be a bleak desert.

Godzilla: Yep. It’s a colony with a red sky.

Little girl: I’m on earth. Our sky is blue and it has lots of white clouds.

Godzilla: Sounds beautiful.

Little girl: Have you been to earth?

Godzilla: No. It’s too far from me.

Little girl: Feel free to come. It’s spring here and the azalea is blooming.

Godzilla: Feel free… Our boss is calling me. I need to go. Bye.

Little girl: Bye.

Second Day:

Little girl: Hey, glad to see you again.

Godzilla: Me too. I’m standing guard.

Little girl: Guard? Are you a soldier?

Godzilla: Yep. I’m killing bugs here.

Little girl: LOL. Do I need to borrow you an insecticide?

Godzilla: Seriously. There are lots of Zerg here.

Little girl: Zerg? Is it a new kind of bug?

Godzilla: Bigger than bug… They are even bigger than humans. They had a really sharp claws.

Little girl: Do you have a gun then?

Godzilla: Yes, it is a high-speed automatic machine gun with a diameter of 32.5 mm, the range of 1500 meters and a firing speed of 900 rounds per second.

Little girl: Wow, sounds so powerful! That must be a heavy weapon.

Godzilla: Yeah. But there’re always endless bugs for me to kill.

Little girl: Horrible.

Godzilla: They are coming. I need to go offline.

Little girl: Take care, see you tomorrow.

(On the next day the little girl told her deskmate that she knew a Lance Warrior on the internet. Her face blushed when her deskmate showed admire expression.)

Third Day:

Little girl: Wow, are you still alive?

Godzilla: Not yet. I’m tough and big.

Little girl: Big can’t help you. I think you said there’re lots of them.

Godzilla: Yes. From yesterday to right now, their attack had never stopped.

Little girl: Oh yeah? So you had a hard fight, right?

Godzilla: They had killed all the people here.

Little girl: Oh my god. You must run for your life now.

Godzilla: I can’t run. My head and feet were bated.

Little girl: ……Do you feel pain?

Godzilla: I’m lying in the corpse of bugs, their blood is smelly.

Little girl: Bugs are walking in the base all around.

Godzilla: …….

Little girl: I’m dying. My batteries are leaking and I’m run out of power.

Godzilla: I’m really dying. A Zerging is coming to kill me.

Little girl: You…

Godzilla: Goodbye. It’s good to talk to you girl.

“Godzilla” was offline.

Lance Planet. In the human base, A Zergling quickly ran to a big broken human machinery dipped in the pool of blood, the Zergling cocked its head to see for a while, it’s a human armoured robot. On its pieces of chest armour, metal hole cracked all sorts of colour of wires were exposed with twittering electronic equipment operation noise, doing some unknown thing. The Zergling raised its sharp silicon paw fiercely and pierced the armour to plunge into the circuit. The ugly human mechanical beating and remains no action.

A little metal piece was flying out when the Zergling grabbed out its claw. There engraved two lines.

“Earth Federal Army, 755 Marine Corps, Heavily Armored Combatbot”

“Armed Sequence GOLIATH, Production number IV454765, Contact title — Godzilla

After 3 hours, Human Military sent the official announcement that Lance Planet was taken by Zerg. But a report about Combatbot IV454765 sent a private message using the military channel invalidly was lost in the war forever.

Scene 1 The Gate of Cassel (3)

“Has Liu Miaomiao arrived?” The door of the inner conference room was pushed open and a tall, thin young man came out with fluent Chinese. He was dressed in a dark green suitable suit with a silver edge of the collar and shiny gold buttons and cuffs. There’s a silver embroidered badge on his chest, which looked like a school uniform. But Lu Mingfei had never seen such a delicacy school uniform.

The piano beauty suddenly stood up, her voice was slightly trembling, “Yes!”

“I am Ye Sheng, the examiner. Please follow me.” The young man smiled and showed his white teeth.

Liu Miaomiao walked gracefully in with Ye Sheng, and the door closed. The remaining 16 people turned to look at each other. No one could hide the tension on their faces.

“Hey, did you go online and search this Cassel College?” Zhao Menghua looked at Su Xiaoqiang and Chen Wenwen, lowered his voice. “It’s said to be a famous university, and many Harvard professors have been transferred to teach there!”

“Well,” Chen Wenwen nodded, “But I didn’t even apply to their school before I got the interview notice.”

“Famous school is like this. They do not care application fee but just the quality of the student.” Zhao Menghua said.

“So why can this guy get the chance?” Su Xiaoqiang looked askance at Lu Mingfei.

Lu Mingfei wriggled shoulders with the posture of afraid of nothing shameless.

“Don’t know how many positions are available.” Chen Wenwen whispered.

“They’ll just choose one or two!” Su Xiaoqiang said, “Don’t you hear Harvard only recruits a few undergraduates from China every year?”

Lu Mingfei suddenly felt hopeless. He had no idea how many people Harvard recruits from China every year but knowing well that it’s almost impossible for him to have the luck. The little confidence he had managed to muster was gone eighty percent.

“Well, I’m just going to try with little hope.” Chen Wenwen said quietly.

“We all have a mind like that.” Zhao Menghua comforted her.

“I don’t care,” Su Xiaoqiang said with her usual swagger. “If I’m not accepted, I’ll go to Stanford. My father has friends!”

The door was pushed open and Ye Sheng made a polite gesture. Liu Miaomiao walked out and turned to the examiner to say thank you. Lu Mingfei could see that she was holding on hard and didn’t want to show disappointment, but the emotion was written on her face honestly.

The piano girl failed in ten minutes! Liu Miaomiao went back to her seat injured. She took the bag and walked out with tears in eyes.

“Su Xiaoqiang.” Ye Sheng read.

“Little Fairy” also jumped up. Her beautiful eyes glowered with gurgle teeth.

Watching Su Xiaoqiang follows Ye Sheng rigidly into the room, Lu Mingfei laughed.

“Don’t laugh, aren’t you afraid?” Chen Wenwen pushed him on the shoulder.

“I am not afraid; I’m just an onlooker.” Lu Mingfei pillowed on his hands and lied in his chair lazily.

When Su Xiaoqiang came out, her steps were even more rigid than when she went in, and her expression was more likely to be called “Angry” but not disappointed or depressed. Ye Sheng smiled politely behind her, which let Su Xiaoqiang stared back severely. Ye Sheng called Zhao Menghua in next.

“What college is that! They’re just making fun of people!” Su Xiaoqiang dropped this sentence and walked away.

Lu Mingfei and Chen Wenwen looked at each other confusedly, “Little Fairy” can’t even compare to Liu Miaomiao and hold only about five minutes.

The interviewer was not like doing an interview inside but practicing his knife, cutting people more and more quickly. Zhao Menghua, known as the best speaker in their high school, did not even hold up to three minutes. He was sent out at a loss.

“Chen Wenwen.” Ye Sheng said.

“Good luck!” Lu Mingfei whispered behind Chen Wenwen.

Chen Wenwen turned to look at him and nodded slightly.

Time passed and everyone kept quiet outside. Lu Mingfei heard his heart beating. He was a little afraid that Chen Wenwen would come out with disappointment.

Chen Wenwen held up 15 minutes. When she came out, there was no expression on her face and she was staring at her toes all the way.

“How?” Lu Mingfei went closer.

Chen Wenwen hesitated and waved to him quietly. “They would ask… “

Lu Mingfei was full of joy and was about to put his ear to her when he heard Ye Sheng ’s voice, “Lu Mingfei.”

Lu Mingfei was stunned and turned to see Ye Sheng waving to him. “Lu Mingfei, you are the next guy.”

Strange, he had never seen Ye Sheng before. Did Ye Sheng recognize him at a glance just by the two-inch photo on the application form he sent to the University of Chicago? Lu Mingfei was a little curious.

He followed Ye Sheng into the meeting room. The room was empty, and at the large conference table, where dozens of people could sit, sat a girl with a sweet smile. She was in the same uniform as Ye Sheng, except an overskirt and a rose lace neckerchief.

“My name is Aki Shutoku, another examiner this time.” The girl stood up and bowed in the typical Japanese way.

“Ohaiyou.” Lu Mingfei didn’t even think and bowed with a salute.

He has been an Otaku for so many years: Played countless PS2 games, watched countless Japanese comics, and he can also speak a little Japanese.

“お は よ う.” Aki Shutoku covered her mouth and smiled gently and corrected Lu Mingfei’s improper Japanese, she smiled with sisterly kindness.

It seems he gives the examiner a good first impression, Lu Mingfei was pleased.

Ye Sheng sat beside Aki Shutoku, opened his notebook and looked at Lu Mingfei. “Then we can start right now.”

Lu Mingfei nodded and took a deep breath. He has been practicing all night, and now he will see the real battlefield!

“Do you believe in aliens?” Aki Shutoku asked softly.

Lu Mingfei was stunned for a moment and then felt that… A nuclear bomb exploded in his head… The mushroom cloud over the sky, nothing else.

What’s the heck? The first question should clearly be “Please introduce yourself” or “Why do you want to apply to our school”!

The first question and the answer is, “My name is Mingfei Lu, a Chinese high school student, I like online computer games and panda…”

The second answer to this question is, “The great faculty is the key reason and your college has a very good research atmosphere…”

These answers are told by Old Tang enthusiastically last night, and then Lu Mingfei read them more than eighty times to remember them clearly enough in his mind.

But this… What the heck about aliens?

His preparation was… Totally useless!

His eyes stared, and his head drooping down slowly. He is such a failure person and his luck is always the worst. Like written formulas on the table before the exam, but his teacher suddenly wants to exchange seats; like peeping for the answer of his deskmate, but finds that they got different versions… As a suck person, he should have the courage to believe in his own fate and do not have to do anything meaningless struggle.

“I do, I believe in aliens.” Said Lu Mingfei. He suddenly felt that Zhao Menghua could hold on for three minutes means he was already a good student.

“Is it?” Aki Shutoku had a slight look on her face, and there was no positive or negative feedback. “Why would you believe that?”

Hell, why would you believe that? Believe is believe, anyway. No one in the world can prove that they have seen aliens, there are still so many people believe, and so many not. Why do you like the girl in the white cotton dress at the next table? Although you can find out thousands of reasons, the real reason is that you don’t know what is going on, your heart always beats when you see her, you pay special attention to what she says, and you remember all the things related to her, so you know you like her. Why is that? No reason. Lu Mingfei thought.

“I used to hang out on the roof at night and look at the stars.” “Said Lu Mingfei.

“Well, good. I look at the stars when I’m free.” She took notes very carefully.

Lu Mingfei did not understand her seriousness at all, just as Lu Mingfei, the foreign minister of China, had just presented numerous diplomatic words in a serious manner and needed to be recorded on paper.

“If you look at the stars you will think. If there are no aliens, it will take a beam of light billions of years to run through the whole universe. It will go through many galaxies, but can only meet people on earth. The light will take not even one second to pass the earth, but this is the only second it could meet people during its journey. That would be weird, right?” Said Lu Mingfei.

“Loneliness? You alluded to the loneliness of light?” Ye Sheng cut in.

Lu Mingfei scratched his head. He didn’t actually mean anything, but it seems that his answer was extended a little bit deeper so that he nodded, acquiesced in Ye Sheng as a lonely child.

“The second question, do you believe in superpowers? “Asked Aki Shutoku.

“Of course.” Lu Mingfei said, “SUPER believe.”

In fact, it is not at all difficult to answer these questions after throwing caution to the wind. If there’s no superpower, then there will be no KujouJotarou’s “Platinum Stars”, also Luffy’s “Rubber Fruit ” does not exist, and Heil’s ultimate skill” Shyaouensatsukokuryuuha” is a fake thing naturally. Then the real world will become Uncle’s endless chat about Montblanc watch and Aunt increasingly complains about housing prices… Lu Mingfei’s future will be: Getting up in the morning to catch the bus to work every day, and paying the mortgage at the end of each month by his salary, serving the mother-in-law carefully during weekends… If any girl would marry him.

Therefore, in the world of Lu Mingfei, the superpower is a must.

“Well, why?” Aki Shutoku looked at Lu Mingfei with an encouraging smile.

“Believe that…… That’s just believing, just like believing in aliens. “Said Lu Mingfei.

He can’t say to Aki Shutoku his real reason is: “I love KujouJotarou’s ‘Platinum Stars’, I hope that is true.”

“Well, tough life doesn’t need an explanation.” Ye Sheng said.

Lu Mingfei stunned. He didn’t understand why the examiner suddenly said this network slang.

“Perhaps it’s derision?” He thought.

“And the third question, do you think that the basis of human existence is idealistic, mentally and spiritually, or materialistic, substantial and physical?” “Asked Aki Shutoku.

Lu Mingfei dumbed instantly.

Is this college interviewer sick? Why are the first two questions so different from the third? Is that part of the high school politic class? Analyzing materialism and idealism. But after Lu Mingfei passed the exam, he forgot all about them!

He blushed and took a few deep breaths, wondering how many people had been defeated on the problem, but he had to get through it!

He let out a long breath, rolled his eyes and stuck out his tongue.

“This…… What does it mean to stick out tongue?” Ye Sheng glanced hesitantly at Aki Shutoku.

“I don’t know.” Lu Mingfei sighed, “This question is too deep, I really can’t answer it, I… Can I give up?”

Ye Sheng and Aki Shutoku were silent for a moment and nodded. “Yes, thank you for your interest in Cassel College.”

Ye Sheng got up. “I’ll see you out.”

Lu Mingfei held a minute and 30 seconds, broke the record of being cut.

Chen Wenwen was carrying her bag to wait for him outside. She trotted a few steps to come over when she saw him come out, “How did you come out so quickly?”

“On political issues… “Lu Mingfei shrugged his head. “I’m not as strong as you are. How many questions did you answer?”

“I also lost out on political questions. The answers were mixed up. They said I didn’t pass the interview.” Chen Wenwen bowed her head.

“You were in there for fifteen minutes!” Lu Mingfei was surprised.

“I told them about the UFO for fifteen minutes…” Chen Wenwen whispered.

“Ah?” Lu Mingfei dumbed again.

In a sudden, he felt a surge of joy in his heart. He reached out his hand and patted Chen Wenwen on the head. “That’s fine, they are just madmen giving mad questions!”

Chen Wenwen looked up with a slight smile on her depressed face. Lu Mingfei was overjoyed and felt that this was the biggest reward he had received that day.

What does it matter not to go abroad? Chen Wenwen also does not go abroad!

Late at night, Ye Sheng sat at a conference table and went over those resumes again.

He looked up and asked Aki Shutoku next to him, “Where’s that little girl? I haven’t seen her all day.”

“Went play somewhere, that might be the reason she followed us?” Aki Shutoku shrugged. “I can’t help it. She’s just a little girl.”

“How did the interview go?” The door opened and a man with a suitcase hurried in. “I bought a ticket for a Red-Eye flight and just arrived.”

He was a dusty old man, with thick glasses on the bridge of his nose, with gray hair that was loose and unkempt, not permed but uncombed for some time. He wore a scruffy suit and baggy pants.

“Professor Guderian.” Ye Sheng sat up. “We had interviewed a total of 17 students… “

“Don’t waste time! I just came to ask Lu Mingfei! I only care about Lu Mingfei!” Professor Guderian looked nervous as if he were the student’s parent but not the examiner. “Tell me, Lu Mingfei, how did he present in the interview?” This old guy of German descent spoke fluent Chinese.

Ye Sheng and Aki Shutoku looked at each other, Ye Sheng turned to the record page of Lu Mingfei. He hesitated and shook his head.

“Only a minute and a half to go.” Ye Sheng said.

“The strongest is always the fastest!” Professor Guderian rejoiced.

“Well…… For the first question, he believes in aliens, because he thinks that if there were no aliens, human beings would be quite lonely in the universe… “Ye Sheng smiled bitterly.

“What a great answer! I am so moved by him!” Professor Guderian tutted, “Lu Mingfei is awesome!”

“Is it… Is it that good?” Ye Sheng was stunned. “In the second question, he also believes in superpowers. There is no reason to say… “

“Perfect! “Said professor Guderian firmly.

“This is called the perfect answer? This is… The answer is given by the college?” Ye Sheng and Aki Shutoku looked at each other in speechless despair.

“Let me explain!” Professor Guderian said: “The first question, he replied that he believed in aliens, not only that, he also put forward the important concept of ‘loneliness’, and the cohesion of our community comes from loneliness! The words directly pointed out the core of this problem, which used aliens to metaphor the difference between ordinary people and our race. The second problem is that there is absolutely no need for a reason to believe something. When we talk about trust, it comes from the heart, a natural sense of trust. If he makes up a reason for trust, he will lose points. How did he answer the third question?”

“I don’t know…” Aki Shutoku touched her forehead, “I mean, he said ‘I don’t know’… “

Professor Guderian looked up and took a deep breath. “If I hadn’t known he had such a strong pedigree, I would have thought he had peeked at the paper.”

“Can’t the answer be… ‘I don’t know’?” Ye Sheng scratched his head.

“The answer is ‘I don’t know’, his pedigree defines his worldview. People who straddled between the two communities would understand the world between idealism and materialism, and that shows his potential.” Exclaimed Professor Guderian loudly. “There must be such hesitation in the understanding of the world by truly potential students!”

“Professor Guderian, are you just… giving unprincipled agreement?” Aki Shutoku smiled awkwardly.

Professor Guderian paused for a moment, then spread out his hands. “Ok, there’s a little bit… But I really think he did a good job… “

“I understand that college gives a lot of convenience to students who have an edge in their pedigree, but if it’s like this… Is it too blatant?” Ye Sheng shook his head. “If so, why do we have the interview?”

“You don’t understand, it’s been decades since there was such an ‘S’ level candidate, and if we give a failed result… The headmaster will not let us go easily!”

Ye Sheng and Aki Shutoku looked at each other. “Is he really… ‘S’ level?”

“Yes, after repeated confirmation, his rating among all the candidates is’ S ‘, the only ‘S’! The interview, in fact, was for him alone!” Professor Guderian nodded, lowering his voice. “This is the highest secret in the college, so I didn’t tell you before I left.”

Silence covered the room.

“Ah!” Suddenly Aki made a sound.

Professor Guderian covered his heart. “Why you shout in a sudden?”

“I just remembered a bad thing about your desired ‘S’ student… He seemed so disappointed with his answer that after saying ‘I don’t know’, so he gave up and walked out of the exam.” Aki and Ye Sheng looked at each other in consternation.

“That’s a good answer. Why he gave up?” Professor Guderian looked as if he were going to jump.

“The question and the supporting answer… “Ye Sheng shrugged and smiled bitterly. “You’ll be the only one thinking that’s a good interview!”

“I must save it! Must be saved! I’ll call his family!” Professor Guderian groped around for his mobile phone.

Ye Sheng scratched his head and sighed, “Let me do that. You will frighten the family of the student and make them think you’re going to kill them…”

At three o ‘clock in the night, when everything was still, the phone rang across Lu Mingfei’s house.

Aunt sat up in shock and looked over her shoulder to see the telephone on the nightstand ringing so cheerfully that it almost jumped.

“What’s wrong with you? Call in the middle of the night!” Aunt picked it angrily.

Soon her anger subsided and she could not say a word. Uncle sat up from his bed and saw his wife’s hair scattered and her eyes glazed over as if she had been struck by lightning.

Lu Mingze was also waking up by the ring. When he turned to see another bed, his cousin was licking his lips and humming joyfully like a pig.

The next morning, Regent Hotel.

Lu Mingfei’s family went to the ninth executive floor’s VIP dining room. Uncle suited well with his big belly and educated Lu Mingfei and Lu Mingze to understand the rules to this kind of place, like do not always touch the tableware. Aunt looked around, praised the superior hotel is brilliant.

Scene 1: The Gate of Cassel (2)

After watching three consecutive series of Matrix one time, Lu Mingfei suddenly felt that he should have a very magical ability that has not been discovered, like “Neo”, which is “the one”. One day there will be a mysterious man to explore his ability, he will have a great transformation under the burning eyes of people around him… And do some earth-shattering things.

But his Chinese teacher criticized the class with his forward-looking style, looking directly at the last few rows of students of the classroom who were napping. He did even use his split vision to glance at Lu Mingfei who sat in the corner, so Lu Mingfei can only shrink his head and give up to explain his own journey mentally.

No one discussed the great idea with him; he had to hammer out the details himself. By the time Lu Mingfei was in his third year of high school, the fantasy had been set. When the school did the Spring Festival Gala, the piano level ten beauty Liu Miaomiao played the piano on the stage, and all his male classmates in black suits were dancing around the piano. At that time, Lu Mingfei sat in a forgotten corner, imagining, thinking of there might appear a helicopter from the sky to pick him up then a group of black sunglasses men like CIA agents in movies will walk in the hall. They will say Mr. Lu Mingfei, it’s not the time to watch the Spring Festival Gala. The Organization is calling you. They will give Lu Mingfei a black military uniform and long windbreaker, surrounding him with the focus of all his classmates. Outside the hall, there would be a black helicopter roaring by the huge rotor, like knives cutting face. At that time, the little piano beauty Liu Miaomiao and all the dancing boys would stop and stare at the figure of Lu Mingfei.

The point of this story is not how he will save the world, but the other’s sight staring at his figure.

Super cool!

Actually, Lu Mingfei understood that this illusion is just killing his time. But he could find no merit in himself to be proud of. For him, the future should be to go to an unknown university, fall in love with a normal girl, find a job and rent a house, maybe his parents will urge him to get married occasionally when they think of him, then he will get married, have a child and work every day.

With this letter from America, his stagnant life was about to change. But in this family meeting, he felt like an outsider, huddled in a corner of the sofa with his hands firmly on his knees, and the living room was filled with the echo of endless chatter of Aunt, Uncle and Lu Mingze.

He got up and walked out of the living room. No one noticed the main character’s departure at all, and the remaining three were still debating the authenticity of the interview notice. Aunt and Lu Mingze were quite upset. If this letter is true, it’s a stroke of rarely dumb luck that fallen on Lu Mingfei. Aunt was not used to despondent Lu Mingfei’s suddenly brightened up. How could her own son come over him in the future?

Lu Mingfei returned to his room and connected to the QQ, staring at the girl’s icon wearing a baseball cap. The icon was gray, which means offline or invisible. Anyway, there’s no message. Lu Mingfei looked at the wall clock, he left the message 18 years before, asked if Chen Wenwen wants to participate in the activity of Literary Club tomorrow evening.

Chen Wenwen does not actually wear a baseball cap. She has long soft straight hair, very beautiful, so there’s no need to cover herself with a baseball cap. Lu Mingfei knew Chen Wenwen on the day he entered the school. She was sent by a Passat in a low profile, wearing a white cotton skirt and a pair of white socks with lace and a “Hello Kitty” hairpin on her long hair. The hottest girl in Lu Mingfei’s class should be “Little Fairy” Su Xiaoqiang, Su was sent to school with a Mercedes S500 with DKNY. Pride filled her eyes. She waved to say goodbye to her rich father and took a look at the new boys in the class while hoping they could back with admiring sight. But the boys stared at the corner by the window. When Chen Wenwen had finished the school entering procedure, she sat on the bench with a copy of Duras’s L’amant in her hand. The sun shone on her cotton dress and skin, and everything seemed transparent.

“Little Fairy” had kept her proud for 15 years. She was defeated by a little artistic girl on the first day of high school, thus she’s filled with dissatisfaction. Unluckily, there was a “blind” boy standing beside her, pointing at Chen Wenwen and whispering to “Little Fairy”: “That should our class belle.”

Have ever “Little Fairy” been subjected by bullying like this? She stepped on the boy’s foot hard and turned to go.

That boy is Lu Mingfei.

In fact, Lu Mingfei is a very frank person. He thought Chen Wenwen was more beautiful than “Little Fairy”, then he said so and causes “Little Fairy” ’s aversion for three years. At that time there were seven or eight boys around Chen Wenwen. Each of them thought so, but others know the truth of “Silent appreciation”. Later, these people formed a literary club. The core of the literary club was Chen Wenwen, who took part in weekly activities to read some cold and sad European and American literary works and wrote the feelings after reading them to the Chinese teacher for correction. According to Uncle, what he read were all written by “white women of the middle class”, and he did not understand why Lu Mingfei was a member of the literary club.

To Lu Mingfei, Chen Wenwen is the first female idol in his life and sets up the image of an appropriate good girl for him. At the age of 15, Lu Mingfei felt that the greatest happiness in the world was to marry Chen Wenwen. Lu MingFei feels there is little hope because he was invited by Chen Wenwen to join the literary club. President Chen Wenwen had invited two members, one is Lu MingFei, another is “Little Fairy” ‘s love Zhao Menghua. It’s easy to describe Zhao Menghua, he is most likely to be “The Second Chu Zihang” in school.

Zhao Menghua was also applying to go abroad without any offer yet, but this confused Cassel College sent the interview notice to Lu Mingfei.

“Wanna have a play?” A big cat’s icon was jumping up with the ID “Nuo Nuo”. Lu Mingfei did not remember when he added this person, but he never refused the invitation of others: there are very few people adding him.

“Fine.” Lu Mingfei answered casually.

Lu Mingfei was still using TrackPoint operation, he had something in mind lazily. Besides, “Nuo Nuo” sounds like a name for a girl, those tough hands in the channel should be all kinds of uncles. But soon, Lu Mingfei found that the opponent is both fierce and cunning. He was distracted by the moment, then his exploring Drone was ambushed by the other side with two Zerglings. Loss of a Drone is not a big deal, but the clever little trap let Lu Mingfei alerted up. He strengthened the defence of his base, while produced six Zerglings to patrol around. This saved his life, he was aware of a team of invasion Zerglings in the very first moment, so the Zergling team can only immediately retreat without an opportunity to attack.

Lu Mingfei can’t neglect the opponent anymore, he connected his mouse.

The formal battle had just begun. Both sides had updated their arms from Zergling to Hydralisk and sent Mutalisks coincidently with Hydralisks attacking at the same time to generate a double line attack. When the queen appeared, the fight between the two sides has been heated up. Both two sides had four bases, mixing armies launched a fierce fight in the central, and plasma were splashing on the battlefield. Lu MingFei had sweat on his forehead, clicking his keyboard as if playing the piano. He estimated that the other one is not easy: They are competing on micro-operation at an almost professional level. For the first time, Lu Ming encountered such a strong opponent and decided to take the risk of updating the main base to level 3 to produce the combo of Devourer, Guardian and Ultralisk. This is a fundamental strategic transformation, if the other side has some slightest hesitation and stops the attack, Lu Mingfei can win the game doubtless.

The progress bar was advancing slowly, Lu Mingfei’s heart was beating accelerated with sweating palms. He bluffed and made a group of Hydralisk and three more Lurkers. If the opponent thought Lu Mingfei is setting a large group of the army, then she’s made a fool of herself. This is all that Lu Mingfei had right now, and he costed all the resources on updating.

Soon, the upgrade will be completed, and the combo will be able to take over enemy bases one by one as soon as they leave the field.

Lu Mingfei felt the dawn of victory.

“You’re updating your base to level three.” A line of words appeared at the bottom of the screen.

Lu Mingfei was stunned.

“You can concede, I have four teams of Hydralisk and four teams of dogs, all second level.” Nuo Nuo went on typing.

The progress bar was about to come to an end, but Lu Mingfei can only type “GG”. While Nuo Nuo was typing she shared the vision. Outside Lu Mingfei’s base, Nuo Nuo’s soldiers pressed the border, once they attack, a crushing victory will come.

Lu Mingfei quitted the game and switched back to the QQ interface, said to Nuo Nuo, “Admire!”

Nuo Nuo did not answer and left an expression of grinning, then went offline.

Lu Mingfei, for the first time in his life, felt that he was seen through by someone, like his closest friend. After many years of separation, he came back to find him. He sat there for a moment, clicking through to see Nuo Nuo’s profile, but it was a blank. He searched his memory, convinced that he had never known such a great StarCraft girl player.

The head picture of Chen Wenwen was bouncing in the list, it’s gray however. It means Chen Wenwen went online but had left.

“Go, see you the day after tomorrow.” This’s the message Chen Wenwen left for him.

He waited for almost nineteen hours, and all he saw were these seven words. But his low mood suddenly seems to be evaporated. He jumped into bed with a whistle, wriggle his waist, and forgot about the loss on StarCraft at all.

Lu Mingze walked into his bedroom and looked up and down at his cousin, said impatiently, “My parents called that Guderian professor, said the day after tomorrow to the Regent Hotel to have the interview, they let you be prepared.”

The next night.

“Hey, Old Tang, do you know what questions American college interviews ask?” Lu Mingfei was typing in QQ.

“What? Did you get an interview?” Old Tang’s panda head icon was kept jumping.

Old Tang is the only person Lu Mingfei could think of and the only person who can help. Old Tang, an American Chinese, living in New York. Probably he has the family name of Tang, everyone called him Old Tang even he’s not old. It is said that Old Tang grew up in the United States, so he can’t speak Chinese very neatly, but it is ok to type on the Internet. Old Tang has no problem except feeling too good about himself at times. His life goal is to be an Indiana Jones.

“Well, tomorrow morning is the interview, but I searched the Internet for a long time and found nothing about what will interview ask about.” Lu Mingfei answered honestly.

“Well…… The interview questions can be different for universities. For example, New York University and Harvard University are completely different.”

“Do you know Harvard or New York then?”

“Didn’t I tell you that I went to society to work after high school?” Old Tang posted a frustrated panda face on the screen.

“This ‘went to society‘ shows your Chinese progress is obvious!”

“Come on, let’s do the video call, I’ll give you guidance on pronunciation.” Old Tang said.

Lu Mingfei took a look at the bed and sleeping Lu Mingze, hesitated, “Then you should low your voice down, my cousin is sleeping.”

“No problem.”

Video voice then rang two times and got connected. A funny-looking guy with drooping eyebrows waved his hand with the voice like thunder, “Hey! Dude!”

Lu Mingfei was so scared that he almost jumped over and ate the speaker.

“Be Quiet! Lower your voice!” Lu Mingfei waved his hand to Old Tang while unplugging the speaker line and switched to his headset.

“What’s the big deal?” Old Tang muttered. “The house I rent is near the railway. It’s noisy. Where are you? Being so careful?”

“I live with my aunt and uncle.” Lu Mingfei whispered.

“Oh, oh.” Old tang nodded, lowered his voice and spoke in sloppy Chinese. “So you can move out if you pass the interview? I’ll definitely help you!”

“Old Tang, you’re such a good dude.” Lu Mingfei gave a thumbs-up.

“As the first place in the StarCraft channel, it will be really stingy if I don’t help the second place.” Old Tang said, “Ha-ha!”

For a moment Lu Mingfei was a little touched and became more confident in tomorrow’s interview. He wandered all day and spent the afternoon on the roof looking at the setting sun. No one can tell him what an American college interview is like. The other interviewees are probably correcting their pronunciation word by word under the guidance of a tutor or parents? But Lu Mingfei found no one to help him. He searched for a long time and saw Old Tang was online, so he went to try. He doesn’t know Old Tang very well either.

But, in the corner that he does not think of, there’s still a person to be able to help him as his brother.

Loyalty, this is loyalty!

“It is said that I am also a person whose parents were dead,” Old Tang continued to sigh. “You know, it is not easy to get along here in America, especially for single people like us. Fortunately, I can get social relief… “

“What are you talking about! Why you’re saying also? My father and mother are just working outside!” Lu Mingfei spat at him.

“Oh, oh, soorry, I got the wrong meaning.” Old Tang bowed his hands repeatedly in the window.

“Please dude, can you stop using your weird Chinese! What’s soorry? Sorry, okay? Isn’t it time for us to do some accent coaching?” Lu Mingfei felt quite discouraged.

“Hum, right, I’ll have some play after teaching, quick! Start now!” Old Tang cleared his throat, “This is the most common opening question used in the interview: Why did you apply for this college, please give me a reason?”

“But I didn’t apply… “

“Come on! Don’t talk nonsense, practice with me! Brother, I am responsible for your life! The great faculty is the key reason, and your college has a very good researching atmosphere…”

” The great faculty is the key reason, and your college has a very good researching atmosphere…” Lu Mingfei followed Old Tang to practice.

As the night went on, all was still in the little southern town. Street lamps lit up the empty streets, and most of the lights in the buildings went out, leaving only the windows of several sleepless families. In one of the windows, a boy repeated some sentences again and again with his unclear pronunciation, cramming; while another guy thousand miles away was eating yogurt and shouting “No, No, No!” to his every wrong pronunciation.

Lu Mingze turned his eyes, glanced at Lu Mingfei and snorted impatiently. He then muffled his ears and rolled over.

On the third morning, Regent hotel.

This is the most luxurious chain hotel in the city, a five-star hotel. Lu Mingfei knew this hotel because Uncle likes to drink tea here in the lobby and chat with friends while letting the waiter refill the strong tea into boiling water. It is not expensive but can make him have a sense of superiority to enjoy the world’s top service.

Lu Mingfei had not entered the glass door of the hotel and was staring around with a pair of red eyes that had been burning all night.

This hotel is fu**ing luxurious! American schools are fu**ing rich! Lu Mingfei praised in his heart.

He was sitting outside the executive room, which had 17 chairs for each of the 17 interviewers. No one asked them to show any identification, and when Lu Mingfei stepped gingerly into the hotel’s front door, a waiter smiled and said, “Are you the student who comes to Cassel College for the interview? Follow me to the executive floor, please.” He was then brought into the room by a pretty sister in a dress and ten-centimetre heels to meet his acquaintances.

Chen Wenwen, Su Xiaoqiang, Zhao Menghua, Liu Miaomiao were all here. There were others he had seen but could not name, others came from his school, and others he had never seen before.

“Lu Mingfei?” Everyone who knew him made such a surprised sound as if his presence on the occasion were very strange.

Lu Mingfei had to wave the letter in his hand and grinned. “I’m here for the…” He gulped. “Interview.”

Then he sat down on the last chair gloomy with a form and a pencil with names and ages and all that. Lu Mingfei filled in while his eyes flew around.

The situation looked terrible. Everyone’s enemy was well prepared. Needless to say, Zhao Menghua‘s tutor is an American, Su Xiaoqiang pronunciation lived in the USA for a year. Even Chen Wenwen didn’t dress casually. She wore a blue skirt with white lace socks and a white scarf, and she changed her hairpin to a pearl oyster, like the British nobles’ uniform on television.

Lu Mingfei scratched his head and sighed.

“Nice dress.” After losing interest in comparing strength, he turned to look at Chen Wenwen.

The waiter brought tea, croissant and a cup of hot milk, Lu Mingfei ate bread and drank hot milk. After solving the problem of hunger he kept looking at Chen Wenwen. A moment later, a thought occurred to him… Perhaps he’s enough lucky to pass the exam, and he can go abroad to study together with Chen Wenwen?

He looked up at the roof and suddenly gave a dumb laugh that startled everyone around him.

“Lu Mingfei, don’t make a sound. The examiner is coming. Inside the room.” Chen Wenwen covered her mouth and whispered to him, pointing to the inner conference room.

“Are you ready?” Lu Mingfei smiled and interrupted. This is a meaningless line, he just wanted Chen Wenwen to speak.

“I’m not sure,” Chen Wenwen said, looking at Su Xiaoqiang and Zhao Menghua, lowering her eyes despondently. “My speaking skill is not as good as theirs…”

“You’ll be all right! I think your spoken English is pretty…” Said Lu Mingfei.

Scene 1: The Gate of Cassel (1)

Lu Mingfei typed “GG” and exited the game.

In the final scene on the screen, twelve human cruisers focus their fire with Yamato Cannons, bursting his Brood into a pool of blood.

He lost today’s sixth inning, 0-6. The last game he insisted on 22 minutes and 23 seconds but was finally lost, the other side’s micromanagement is very good with Terran. Human riflemen in StarCraft is an abnormal troop, their speed of beginning to shoot is zero, and they have great maneuverability. Lu Mingfei’s dogs can’t catch up with them and be dead on the way.

In the chat channel, the opponent was speaking triumphantly, “Terran may not need to produce tank when the opponent is Zerg. The Korean professional players will not produce tank, instead, they will begin with the rushing population: a large number of machine guns mixed with nurses to eliminate you… “

Lu Mingfei can imagine that guy beaming.

Lu Mingfei didn’t say anything and switched to QQ, the icon of the girl wearing a baseball cap was grey, motionless. She didn’t come online, so he waited in vain again. He scratched his hair, a little disappointed. Another icon jumped up, it’s a very spanking panda, ID was “Old Tang”.

“Dude, you did a good job with Zerg. See you next time!” Old Tang was the guy who beat him. “All you need is micromanagement. Your tactical awareness is good enough.”

“Sounds good,” said Lu Mingfei.

Old Tang went offline, Lu Mingfei spit out his tongue at the screen.

Old Tang will probably not be satisfied if he could see the operation of Lu Mingfei, but will only scold a “weirdo”, and then doesn’t want to play with him. Instead of a mouse, Lu Mingfei used an old IBM laptop with TrackPoint. Playing StarCraft with TrackPoint is something only a madman would do, like picking an ear with a rolling pin. If he wants to pick up the mouse, probably Old Tang can’t live more than eight minutes? Then there would be no time to kill.

But Lu Mingfei was too lazy to tell Old Tang that he is completely boring and wants to try the challenge of high difficulty. He has a lot of time to kill, what if Old Tang doesn’t want to play with him next time?

Lu Mingfei spent a lot of time, but she wasn’t online.

Why? He told himself sometimes. Waiting like a fool, waiting for four hours to say two or three words, as if it is not worth it.

But who can tell if it’s worth it?

“A box of discounted bags of milk, half kilograms of Cantonese Sausage, and a new periodical of Novels Assembly that Mingze wants! And go to the porter’s office to see if there’s any mail from America! Playing games? You don’t even care about your own business at all! If no one accepts you, will you be able to pass the entrance exam? What’s the use of spending so much money on you?” Auntie’s voice thundered in the next room.

Lu Mingfei felt his head was buzzing and responded in hurry, slipping out of the door. The corridor was quiet, the afternoon sun shining in through the windows at the end of the corridor, basking on him warmly. The pure white sheets were drying in the corridor and the wind outside blowing the green leaves swaying, gurgling. He leaned against the door and listened to Auntie in it whining and complaining as if it were a different world.

It’s spring again. Lu Mingfei, a senior student in high school, will be eighteen years old.

He lives with his Uncle and Aunt, has a cousin named Lu Mingze, studies in the most famous local private high school with high tuition fees and strict teachers. Luxury cars fly such as water, beauties pass such as clouds. There were three months and four days before he has to take the college entrance examination. These days, everyone saw him would inculcate earnestly, tell him that the end is coming, he should be full of the spirit of fighting.

But the greater the pressure, the lazier Lu Mingfei is. In addition to playing StarCraft, he will just stare at the roof in a daze.

As a man who has no sense of existence, his laziness is not difficult to be understood.

Lu Mingfei hasn’t seen his parents for more than six years. The good news is that they are still alive and write to him every six months. The bad news is that in every letter, his mother will tell him regretfully that the plan to go back home to see will be postponed again, because “Things have made new progress”.

His parents are both archaeologists, and they are working on a big project that would shock the world as Sven Hedin discovered the ancient city of Loulan. In junior high school, Lu Mingfei was very proud of his parents. He read a lot of books about archaeology and talked with his classmates on the way home from school. But he soon discovered that he was proud of his dudes, who had been picked up by their parents in a car. After school, a group of students had lounged along side by side, accounting for almost half of the street, then klaxons will sound again and again, and one of the dudes will restrain himself and climbed into his parents’ car. People had gotten less and less, and Lu Mingfei was always the one left, swinging and lounging forward.

Dudes looked out through the window, the figure that was kicking the stone of Lu Mingfei went away freely and felt envious that he could go anywhere, go shopping in the mall, buy food and eat, and play billiards.

“Lu Mingfei’s family is the best for him, they never restrain him.”

In fact, Lu Mingfei will not shop in the mall nor play billiards alone. After he got tired of sitting in the Internet cafe, he went home. Then he entered the building but did not enter the house. He went through the iron fence leading to the roof of the building, sat by the buzzing air conditioner, and looked at the city until the sun went down in the west.

Lu Mingfei thinks his parents are supermen. Perhaps maybe one day the plane they take will be crashed, they will suddenly appear in front of him, holding the plane landed safely. They are always busy working for the world, not for him. Superman parents can be used to boast for sure, but there’s no difference between not exist. Lu Mingfei cannot remember the appearance of his parents. But when he looked at the childhood family photo occasionally, he can barely recall that a man and a woman, and the old house filled with Boston ivy.

What Uncle and Aunts are more interested in is the money that Lu Mingfei’s parents send back from abroad regularly. Depending on this money, Lu Mingfei can go to private noble high school; depending on this money, Aunt and Uncle can buy a small BMW, Uncle has money to buy some counterfeit brand goods, Aunt has money to lose on the Mahjong table; depending on this money, his cousin Lu Mingze has the nickname “Prince Ze” in the school.  Lu Mingze and Lu Mingfei are studying in the same high school, not only with better grades, his clothes are more delicate than Lu Mingfei. As long as there are girls, he will lead up to pay. Uncle and Aunt will wear especially decent to attend the parents’ meeting of Lu Mingze, letting people feel that Lu Mingze is a sweetheart who grew up in the honey pot.

If Lu Mingze is not 160cm height and 85kg weight, he would have found a girlfriend a long time before.

And he, Lu Mingfei, is only “Lu Mingze’s brother”.

Lu Mingfei does not mind this. Even his parents do not care about him, why should he have high requirements on his Uncle’s family!

Lu Mingfei carried his hands in pocket and hung his head to look at the ground. He went all the way downstairs and bought what his Aunt need in the convenience store. Then he strolled to the bookstall to buy a new Novels Assembly.

Auntie thinks Lu Mingze is smart, good at reading and ambitious. Lu Mingze read Novel Assembly means “Our Mingze is learning literal”. Every time there is a new copy of the Novel Assembly, Aunt feels Chinese youth literature has movement and will catch up Lu Mingfei to buy it, letting Lu Mingze keeps up with the situation right now.

The old guy of the newsstand downstairs feels Lu Mingfei is both rascally and melancholy who loves literature. He always comes to buy Novels Assembly but never takes a look. However, Lu Mingfei would crouch beside the newsstand and read the Domestic Computer and Game without paying, then throw it back on the booth. Afterwards, he will comment that it’s more and more crap directly and go home.

Lu Mingfei is a bit evil. Lu Mingze often says Lu Mingfei is staying in his home and commands Lu Mingfei to help him do something. Lu Mingfei will do what his cousin wants, and then he is quite vile to visit Lu Mingze’s secret QQ space.

Lu Mingze had seen literature books and gave himself a pen name: “Lonely Gluttonous Snake”. Then he copied a lot of sad sentences in the QQ space, with his own headshot taken by mobile phone and uploaded a few pictures with some red ink rubbing on his wrist to pretend depression to suicide occasionally. The poetry beside was probably said no love no life. Lu Mingfei knew his cousin was thinking about girls. Their school gave them strict rules, so he wanted to encounter someone on QQ.

Lu Mingfei applied for a new QQ number, named “Sunset Imprint” and used a short hair little beauty’s photo as his icon. Then he set the age to 16 with the personality signature “Let your smile and sadness become my life imprint”. While Lu Mingze was surfing the Internet at home, he will slip into an Internet cafe to chat up “Lonely Gluttonous Snake”. After some days, Lu Mingze probably thought the snake had finally found its delicious food and very happy to let his smile and sadness become the girl’s life marks. His every day at home was very happy to hum the Song of Departure of Shin and asked for a date in real life again and again to start a successful relationship. Lu Mingfei promised to be decisive, but he always set the date-time at Lu Mingze’s piano class. Lu Mingze can’t meet the little beauty and feel anguished. Thus, when he was singing the Song of Departure when also a little sad tone.

This’s the happiest thing for Lu Mingfei these days.

Lu Mingfei is such a person. He’s not much good, nor has the ability to do bad things. He lived on the planet for 18 years, and he still can’t find his future.

“Mingfei, people are saying you’re going to study abroad.” Said the old man of the newsstand.

“Ah, it’s just applying. Who will accept me?” Lu Mingfei squatted beside the booth and began to read a magazine.

“Study abroad is good. You can become returnee after you come back and making big money.”

“I don’t want to make a lot of money. If I don’t get into university, I’ll look after the stands for you. You can just give me some money to buy disks of PS2.”

“Worthless, looking after newsstand can’t make money, I am old.”

Lu Mingfei turned his eyes to look at the overhead green and sunlight shaded from it, “It’s very good, I can bask in the sun, and I can trance myself when no one’s here, and I can see the passing beauties.”

The topic frustrated Lu Mingfei. He did apply to American universities, but it was definitely not because his grades were too good to stand a chance. Everyone has different ways of judging his grades. His teacher said, Lu Mingfei, are you a weight? Do you know how much you have lowered the average score of our class by yourself? Aunt said to Uncle, Mingze’s good grades are our family genes, look at your family genes are not good! Only Lu Mingze was considerate of him and encouraged him on QQ to say, “Sunset! What are you afraid of if you don’t get good grades? I do what I do. That’s what people like us do! You are a good girl in my eyes!”

Aunt had a brainwave and insisted on going abroad. She filled out the application form and generously paid dozens of dollars for each school. Aunt had her own thought. In all the grades of Lu Mingfei, only his English was pretty good; he had followed a genius classmate to TOFEL and had great luck again to get a pretty good mark. With the result of Lu Mingfei, it’s hard for him to enter the top university in China. But abandon the exam to go abroad is quite in vogue right now. If Lu Mingfei could get an offer from America and study abroad, it’s worthy of the money that the parents of Lu Mingfei sent.

In addition, Aunt also has a set of “small” thoughts. Although Lu Mingze’s grade was a bit better than Lu Mingfei, he’s not a top-level student. He cannot go to Tsinghua University or Beijing University that Aunt talks about all day long. But it’s a respectable way to give up the exam and study abroad. University is a lifetime thing, and Aunt still can’t bear to watch Lu Mingze take the adventure. She thought about it, then she probably remembered some famous saying “Every difficult road should be explored by the brave with hard feet”, and felt that Lu Mingfei is not very brave, so let him try to use the hard feet to step a road for Lu Mingze. If he failed, no worry, it just means this road is blocked. Lu Mingfei can take the college entrance examination with his cousin next year.

But the difficult road is obviously hard to be stepped just by brave, the road is full of rugged stones. Lu Mingfei had received a dozen consecutive replies, the opening lines were the same:

“Dear Lu:

Thank you for your interest in our university, but regretfully… “

Aunt spent hundreds of dollars on the application fee to be good people but only resulted in thanks again and again from American with distressed costing. Lu Mingfei was not anxious nor impatient. He was in a steady stage of old monk’s meditation like water without waves. Only because he should cooperate with Aunt’s depression, he squeezed out some sad expression when he received the rejection letters.

Now there was only one university that hasn’t responded to him. The University of Chicago, a top-ranked one.

“Is there any letter for me?” Lu Mingfei was poking his head around the door of the mailroom, feigning with his English pronunciation, “Mingfei Lu.”

“Yes, from America.” The guard threw out a letter.

It’s obviously a reject letter. When he touched the letter he thought. The envelope contained only a thin sheet of paper. If it’s an offer, there will be a thick pile of forms and introduction materials. But all you need to thank you for your application and regret that you have not been accepted is a piece of printed paper.

Lu Mingfei tore open the envelope. Unexpectedly, the letter was written in Chinese:

Dear Mr. Lu Mingfei,

Thank you for your interest at the University of Chicago, but unfortunately, you were not accepted.

But, we always say that there is more than one way. It depends on whether you choose or not.

First of all, I would like to introduce myself to you. Cassel College is a private university located in the outer suburbs of Chicago, Illinois in the United States. And we are a fellowship school with the University of Chicago on extensive academic exchanges.

We are very honoured to receive your application materials from the University of Chicago. After careful evaluation, we believe that you have met the admission criteria of Cassel College. We hereby extend an invitation to you.

Please contact Professor Guderian at our school as soon as you receive this letter. He is on an academic visit to China and will arrange an interview for you.

If you have any further questions, please contact Professor Guderian. I will assist him in your service. I am Norma Lauens, the secretary of Cassel college. It’s a great pleasure to meet you.

Sincerely,

Norma

Lu Mingfei put the letter down and touched his forehead. He was a little confused.

It’s a standard reject letter from the beginning, but why the tone was completely different after the “we always say that there is more than one way. It depends on whether you choose or not”? He’s clearly on the interview list right now. Lu Mingfei’s high school classmates had some successful applications before, but it’s the first ever time an American professor ran all the way to China to do an interview. Lu Mingfei did not know what he was capable of, he did not even contribute application fee to this Cassel College.

Perhaps the real identity of “Sunset Imprint” was found by Lu Mingze? It’s Lu Mingze tried to tease him?

But the envelope does have a postmark from Illinois.

He emptied the envelope, which contained nothing but an elegant piece of typed paper. He confirmed his belief that it must have been a hoax and said he had been asked to contact Professor Guderian in the first place but had not even given him a phone number. He was relieved to think so.

“Sign for it.” The guard threw over another list.

“Sign for a letter?” Lu Mingfei was confused.

“There is also a parcel that comes with the letter, which you must sign for.”

Lu Mingfei signed delusively and got a FedEx envelope with something hard in it. He hesitated, tore open the envelope and emptied it… It’s a cell phone.

A pure black N96 phone.

Lu Mingfei felt he needed to calm down. He turned on the phone and saw the battery was still half full. In the card folder, there’s only one name: “Professor Guderian”.

“It must have been a swindler! And an acquaintance in this block! Only familiar can know our home circumstance!” Aunt clapped her hand on the letter and said it firmly.

“But which swindler will spend so much money? N96! The fake one is sold more than four thousand yuan, and the real one could have a price of over five thousand!” Uncle constantly printed his fingerprints on the black N96, like an old woman fondling her ancestral jade bracelet.

Uncle is a man of good taste. Lu Mingfei had the honour to go out to dinner with Uncle and had seen Uncle clapping his left-hand phone and right-hand watch on the table with fit strength. Then he inadvertently rolled up his sleeve to expose a high imitation Montblanc watch bought from Guangzhou while chatting, won everyone’s unanimous praise of his taste. Recently, Uncle told Lu Mingze more than once that the new N96 is very “Advanced” and suits his taste. But Aunt, who was in charge of the family’s finances, said firmly to him, “No!”

“What is this Cassel College? It must be a scam! What is the fellowship college of the University of Chicago? Last year our school’s first place Chu Zihang went abroad and he also went to a fellowship school at the University of Chicago, I heard that Chu Zihang’s cousin is a professor of a university who got the green card! This kind of famous university’s fellowship colleges are all similar to the Ivy League, even American cannot enter!” Lu Mingze was concerned about his brother’s future rarely.

Lu Mingfei knew that Chu Zihang is the idol of Lu Mingze. At the time most of the students were still wearing Nike and Adidas, Chu Zihang had begun to use brands like Burberry. Chu Zihang tied a Burberry scarf loosely outside a Diesel pullover, passed the aisle, and the whole school would comment on his British style. Once two girls were punished by the school, because they tore each other’s faces in order to fight over “Chu Zihang belongs to me” and Chu Zihang had not even said a word to them.

Lu Mingze told the senior’s story to the “Sunset Imprint” inspirationally, saying one day he will prove to the whole middle school that Chu Zihang is not better than him proudly.

Lu Mingfei felt that the core of the problem is the ogles from whole grade girls. Lu Mingze is more concerned about “How to become a male lion chief of a group of female lions “, rather than do as good as Chu Zihang.

Lu Mingfei does not envy Chu Zihang at all. He thinks these people took Chu Zihang as an idol, but nobody does know where Chu Zihang went to, perhaps he was washing dishes in the American restaurant…… Lu Mingfei is a good sport somehow.

Lu Mingfei’s Chinese teacher took his composition as a negative example and criticized it in class, saying that his composition was unimaginative and pessimistic, just like him, an unenterprising people.

Lu Mingfei rather wanted to stand up at that time, saying even person like him have a dream.

Scene 0: Bai Di City

“Brother…” Someone was whispering in the dark.

It’s really annoying! Whose child got lost?

“Brother.” The child shouted again.

Annoying, annoying! Brother? Not here!

“Brother… Then I’ll go…” Said the child in a low voice, which faded away.

Suddenly, he could not bear it. The sound of the fading away sounded lonely, reminding him of the child’s retreating figure, like an abandoned beagle.

“Well, well, well! Which block, which street and which house do you live on? What’s the name of your unreliable brother? I’ll take you home!” He turned over and sat up.

He sat on the ground in the sun, dressed in white as bright as the moon. What he saw was a white camellia blooming in a thick porcelain vase. After the camellia, the child was lying on the desk, writing a calligraphy with his ink brush.

“Well, you didn’t go? Are you kidding me?” He wanted to speak, but he didn’t.

Naturally, he did something. There was a dish of green grapes on the table. He picked a small bunch from it and handed it to the boy across the table.

The child looked up, his eyes flashing with panic like an alert little beast. “Brother, there are many people outside.”

What the hell? It’s so quiet. He thought.

But, of course, he said something else: “Perhaps we might die? But don’t be afraid, Constantine.”

“Not afraid, with my brother I’ll not afraid… But why… Why don’t you eat me? Eat me, brother can break through all the cages.” The child said earnestly.

Eat…… you? Although you are white and tender, that doesn’t mean you are more delicious than a hamburger. I just ate a hamburger at noon, I’m not hungry. He thought.

“You’re good food, but that would be lonely. You and I have been alone for thousands of years.” Again, he didn’t mean what he said.

“But death is so sad, like being sealed in a black box, forever and forever, black and black… Like groping in the dark night and never touch things when reaching out hands… “

“The destiny of abandoned clan is to cross the wasteland, raise the battle flag again and return home. Death is not terrible, it’s just a long sleep. Before I can devour the world, sleep peacefully is better than lonely trek. We will wake up.” Can’t believe that such a cool sentence comes from his mouth.

“Brother… When you raise up the battle flag and swallow the world, will you eat me?” The child looked at him, his clear eyes were flashing… with expectation.

What the heck! Is this a drama about “we are a family of cannibals love each other”? But your family ethics are really strange!

“Yes, then you will come with me, ascension to the throne!” But he nodded softly, his voice was filled with cold authority.

The child poured a glass of water from the kettle and handed it to him. He drank it in a daze.

“I’m going, brother. Goodbye.” The child stood up.

He wanted to say I wasn’t your brother it’s just misidentified, but he just casually said, “Goodbye, be careful, human, can’t believe it.”

It’s another weird line, inexplicable.

The child went out and closed the door behind him. He listened as the child’s footsteps drew farther and farther away, and finally disappeared altogether.

He was suddenly a little afraid. He thought that he had lost his head. He wondered how far he has to walk to find his brother. What if someone abducts him? He became restless, and when he could not help it, he got up and ran to the door.

He opened the door, and the bright light fell on his white coat, not the sunlight, but the firelight. The city is crying in the flames that occupied sky, the charred black figure is running in the fire, thousands of arrows fall from the sky, the huge plaque is burning, tumbling down with two characters “Bai Di”. It’s like the hell.

In the middle of the city stood a tall pole, on which the child was suspended, with his eyes closed, and the flames of the whole city were burning him.

It was like a great sacrifice.

Heart is really painful like a knife is cutting it. Someone important is lost because he made a mistake.

It mentioned him that he was, indeed, the brother of that child.

“Constantine……” He called out the name.

He sat up suddenly. His eyes opened in the afternoon sun with dyspnea. His whole body was covered with cold sweat, but the outside was the noise of the light rail passing away.

It made him fells that the sound was so sweet as to remind him that everything in his dreams was false, that he is still in an ordinary world.
