Scene 4: The Bronze City (2)

Lu Mingfei jumped up from his chair violently with sweat, as if he had broken a dark membrane to come back to reality. In front of him stood Nuo Nuo, smacking his head so hard that he felt dizzy. They were alone in the empty examination room.

“Admire that you can sleep like that in the 3E exam,” said Nuo Nuo. “Is your zodiac pig?”

“Mine is sheep… Is the test over?” Lu Mingfei rubbed his eyes.

“It’s almost lunchtime. The 3E is only three hours long.”

Lu Mingfei was surprised. On the platform, the burly maintainers removed the whiteboard with messy lines and carried it away.

Nuo Nuo turned to have a look, “Oh, she answered on the whiteboard. There’s no way, we had to put the whiteboard as an answer to hand in. The person in the 3E exam’s mood won’t be very stable, this kind of accident is inevitable. But you are super calm, we are all very curious about your performing. From the monitoring results, you finished with a sweet sleep calmly. Even Professor Manstein was impressed.”

“So… Nothing strange?”

“Not at all, as I said, you were super calm.”

When did that strange dream begin? Ever since he saw Kieran cry? From the time he finished his paper? Or is he still dreaming? The feeling of disconnection between reality and unreality was so unpleasant that he gave his hand to his wrist and wrenched it so hard that tears welled up.

“Swollen…” Said Nuo Nuo, pointing to his wrist.

“Ouch… I know…” Lu Mingfei answered with a grimaced.

“Hand your paper in please.”

“Oh, oh.” Lu Mingfei said, turned over his several pictures and handed them to Nuo Nuo.

“Well, let me count.” Nuo Nuo counted and took out a stapler, “Total of nine answer sheets, nailed up.”

Lu Mingfei was stunned and his head rang loudly. Nine answers, why there are nine answers? He clearly remembered that he had only drawn eight pictures, and he only had eight to draw. Fingel had sold him eight answers. Where did the ninth one come from?

“Wait a minute… Let me check again.” He turned over the paper in Nuo Nuo’s hand in a hurry.

“Check what? For this kind of test, an ‘S’ could deal it easily, right?” Said Nuo Nuo, taking the answer sheet away.

For a brief moment, Lu Mingfei saw his last answer sheet, which did not exist in his memory at all… He certainly drew it, but he can’t remember it at all.

He watched Nuo Nuo hand the answer sheet to Professor Manstein, who threw it into the black cipher box. As the lid snapped shut, it was a done deal. Lu Mingfei has no right to make any further changes.

After Professor Manstein had messed up the code, he handed the box to Nuo Nuo. “Send to Norma to read the papers.”

Lu Mingfei pressed his forehead and his face turned pale. “My drawing skills… Can it be that good? Is that possible?”

When Lu Mingfei sat down at the dinner table, his face can be described as “terrified”.

“Hey, hey! How’s that? The expression on your face… Got caught cheating?” Fingel sat down beside him and shouldered him. “Don’t speak about me!”

“Bullshit, who am I? I am super familiar with this!” Lu Mingfei waved his hand impatiently. “I have answered all eight questions. No one can see my mechanism. It’s just I have… a little more scribbling after I finished.”

“All right, all right, as long as you don’t talk nonsense. Graffiti will be ignored.” Fingel breathed a sigh of relief.

“There is no nonsense talk… As a painting, it’s better than what I can do… “Lu Mingfei didn’t know how to explain it.

They sat under the arc of the restaurant at lunchtime. The restaurant looks like the Templar knights’ era, the central dome hangs a huge tree droplight, each leaf is a small crystal light. On the walls of granite hangs “welcome to our new students” in Latin, while students dressed in green uniforms sitting at the table. At the end of the table sitting the header of this table, Fingel.

“I don’t know you are a leader here.” Said Lu Mingfei.

“I was the table leader because there isn’t a table for eighth-graders, I was assigned to sit with the freshmen.” Said Fingel.

“Pass them in turn.” The waiter set lunch before Fingel.

“Is that the same dish?” Sighed Fingel. “Welcome to the freshman luncheon. We’ll have nothing but schweinshaxe and mashed potatoes and sauerkraut? I have eaten this dish eight times in a row!”

“No problem, I can make some adjustments for you.” The waiter said.

“Is there something to look forward to, like red wine or steak?” Fingel’s eyes sparkled.

“I can adjust the main dish to be schweinshaxe, and the side dish to be two mashed potatoes. Or the main dish is roasted pork knuckles with two sauerkraut. Do you prefer the former or the latter?”

“Is there a schweinshaxe across your head?” Fingel looked at the waiter’s head.

“Eat, you have no choice. This menu is also the tradition of the college. I thought German food is your hometown food? How can you not love home cooking?”

“My hometown’s cow has excrement, I don’t like cow excrement, too.” Said Fingel. “Can you get me?”

“Why do you always eat German food?” Lu Mingfei fiddled the schweinshaxe with a fork, hesitating to know where to start.

“Cassel is a German family, one of the most famous dragons slayer families in history, its generations have lots of great dragon slayers. It’s said that our current principal is a second-string member of the Cassel family,” Fingel said. “the family is the chief trustees of our college, so the style here is German.”

“Is our principle’s family name Cassel?”

“No, the Cassel family members are all dead.”

“All dead?”

“If you think about what his family did for so many years you can understand. It was lucky for them to make it into the 20th century.” Fingel bit his schweinshaxe. “Anyway, after the exam is over, you can relax and wait for the result. The class will start tomorrow at 8 o’clock, the teacher of the Magic Mechanical Design Level 1 class you chose is Maans Rundstedt, who is a crazy examiner, he must take attendance in every class. Careful.”

“Eight o’clock in the morning! So there’s no lie-in?” Lu Mingfei sighed.

“Attention, first-year students! Please note that the Magic Mechanical Design Level 1 has been cancelled tomorrow morning. Professor Rundstedt will send the notes for the first chapter to your email address.” Norma’s voice echoed through the restaurant.

“Sweet!” Lu Mingfei laughed delightfully.

“Professor Rundstedt must be on the mission in China.” Fingel did not lift his head, focusing on nibbling his schweinshaxe.

“Out for mission?” Lu Mingfei was surprised.

“Courses often close for weeks because professors are away on assignments since lots of professors work part-time in the executive department,” Fingel said. “which always has secret tasks.”

“Is it…” Lu Mingfei was surprised.

“It has to do with the dragon. If they cancel the course temporarily, they should find something.”

In the middle of the night, Moniaher was shaken in a storm on the upper reaches of the Yangtze River.

It was a rare autumn storm. With torrential rains, the wind speed had reach category 5. Other boats moored to the shore, only the xenon lights of Moniaher was still flashing in the restless water.

Professor Maans Rundstedt, who is also the ship’s captain, stood at the bridge window. A splash of rain fell then burst on the front window. The wind was howling, the boat was rocking, Maans stood steady, smoking a cigar. He’s waiting for the order.

There was a faint cry from the back of the cabin. Maans frowned. “Go and see what’s wrong with that baby. He’s always crying. Are there none of you know how to care for a child?”

“Professor, none of the current leading members of the executive department are married. Where do you expect us to learn to look after babies?” The girl sitting in front of the screen said without looking up. She was about twenty-three years old, with dark hair, typical Latina looks, wearing the Cassel uniform.

“Call me Captain, now I am the captain of Moniaher, not your professor.” Maans exhaled his cigar. “Don’t let anyone leave their position. Since I’m the only married man, I’m going to visit our dear baby. Selma, watch their vital signs. If there is anything out of whack, get them up immediately!”

“Understood!” Latin girl Selma replied.

“Captain, we have received the signal from the Marine Bureau of the Yangtze River that the storm will continue after midnight, the wind speed will increase to 10 and the rainfall will reach 200mm. It’s a rare rainstorm, possibly accompanied by thunderstorms. They are mobilizing helicopters to rescue us and advise us to abandon the ship.” The third mate took off his headphones and said.

“Reply that our ship had a very deep draft and the hull was stable enough to withstand heavy rain. There are a few patients on board and it was not advisable to abandon the ship.” Maans said, “You don’t have to worry about it, this is Moniaher, not a tugboat, it’s a warship that could endure level 12 wind.” He looked up at the dark sky outside and said to himself for a moment, “But this storm reminds me of the frozen sea of Greenland ten years ago… Every time I get close to these things, there is a sense of impending disaster.”

He went to the back cabin. It was quiet. Everyone had been trained at Cassel. They stared at their screens, operating quickly and silently.

The earphones echoed with the sounds of two entwined hearts, in Selma’s heart-monitoring window, a glint of green light meant the young, robust hearts were still beating.

Fifty meters below the surface of the water.

Spotlights cannot penetrate much distance in the deep water. There’s only a livid light band. Aki Shutoku’s slim figure was floating in the side, Ye Sheng can pull to her hand if he wants.

Ye Sheng, Aki Shutoku, 27th underwater cooperative operation. They were Cassel College classmates who joined the executive department at the same time. They had been diving partners for five years and could read each other’s minds with one eye.

“I heard that that freshman, Lu Mingfei, shot Caesar and Chu Zihang in the ‘freedom day’ when he entered school,” Ye Sheng said, “He didn’t show that potential when we interviewed him.”

“I don’t know what Nuo Nuo did to persuade him.” Aki Shutoku said, “Usually she talks nonsense, but sometimes she has a lot of ideas.”

There was a single signal line between the two of them, which connected them closely.

Nuo Nuo did say one thing nonsense, that Ye Sheng and Aki Shutoku were not lovers, it was forbidden in Cassel College. Deep diving is quite dangerous, relying on oxygen cylinders and a layer of Nano-material diving suit to withstand the equivalent of a dozen atmospheres of water pressure, only relying on a signal line to maintain contact with the human world, it’s easy to lead to over tension. If there are emotional factors between companions, it may lead to unpredictable results.

The executive department forbade underwater cooperation with lovers, they claimed that the violation of this discipline led to heavy losses in the Greenland Ice Sea ten years ago. No one knows what the operation was ten years ago, but according to no one in today’s executive department has been involved in that operation, it can be roughly concluded that the team members all died ten years ago.

They reached the bottom, where the wind and rain had filtered through a 50-meter layer, leaving only gentle waves. It was flooded by the Three Gorges Reservoir, a hilly area where stones were worn smooth and difficult to settle. Ye Sheng popped his steel claws from flippers and stands lightly on the rock, reaching for the bottom sediment.

He showed Aki what he had found, a piece of pottery with ancient patterns.

Aki took over the piece of pottery to examine, “At least more than a thousand years. It’s a thing belong to the Shu culture that had been engulfed by ancient Chinese culture, maybe the relics of the Baidi City.”

“There’s not enough oxygen. Is this the intended location? But I can’t see the ruins of the so-called Baidi City. There was no sign of a ‘city’ anywhere in sight.”

“Norma, I need sonar to scan the terrain.” Ye Sheng called in the signal line.

“Copy that. Sonar scan ready.” The central processing unit in the United States answered immediately.

A 3D sonar map, outlined in dark green contours, showed up on the helmet screen of Ye Sheng and Aki. Sound waves are far more useful in water than light.

“Although we can’t see it,” Ye Sheng pointed, “there are mountains in the northeast and southeast. Above the water is the Baidi Mountain and below the water is Chijia Mountain. According to the Chinese Fengshui study, here is the meeting place of the mountain dragon and the water dragon, which gathered the breath of Yin and Yang, which means it is a good place to build a city. The ruins of Baidi city may be here, but we have to find the entrance.”

“Even if there was an entrance, it would have been covered by floating dust for several meters,” giggled Aki. “so, for saving time, please.”

“It’s exhausting every time.” Ye Sheng complained, “I need a constant point.”

“Am I not your constant point all the time?” Aki swam to his back and used her steel claw to clutch the rock tightly, hugged encircling Ye Sheng’s waist.

It’s a tacit understanding. Ye Sheng is as vulnerable as a baby when he drives “snake”. He may be carried away by water or entangled by the signal line, which may lead to life danger. So every time Aki would hold him like this.

Ye Sheng closed his eyes, in his “spiritual vision”, restless snakes were encircling in his mind with cold blue scales. Ye Sheng’s body quivered slightly.

Speaking Spirit – Snake.

Ye Sheng gives orders to these snakes. The snake group in the deep of his mind was liberated, they flew along with the limbs and bones of Ye Sheng, surged out and disappeared into the water.

Moniaher monitored a powerful biological current, which erupted at a point underwater.

“Snake” is Ye Sheng’s speaking spirit, as well as his helper. Usually, they rest in the depth of Ye Sheng’s mind, only Ye Sheng can wake them up. As thousands of scouts working for Ye Sheng to explore the surrounding situation. In the scientific interpretation, “snake” is a kind of biological electric current, while in the understanding of dragons, they are slaves subdued by Ye Sheng.

The “snake” would be more powerful in a good conductor. It is greatly enhanced by the huge water of the reservoir at the moment. The field with a five-kilometre radius was now under the surveillance of Ye Sheng.

With the “snake” entering every crack of the water, Ye Sheng’s consciousness went down and down. He opened his eyes with golden light in his pupils. He looked at the world through the eyes of a “snake”, in which the world was made up of countless tiny tubes that intersected and stretched out in infinity. His “snake” moved through the tubes, filling the place with grey mist.

Aki felt his body cooling. At his weakest point, his heart rate dropped rapidly to 30 beats per minute, as well as blood temperature. Through his mask, Ye Sheng’s face showed dead gray, only his disconcerting gold pupils were still flashing. Aki put her arm around Ye Sheng and tried to make him feel her temperature. She always does so, although Ye Sheng is the group leader, he needs her protection at this time.

“Captain, the Maritime Bureau of the Yangtze River has informed us that there may be an underwater earthquake of magnitude 5!” The third mate yelled, “They’re insisting on sending us rescue helicopters. Maybe they realize something’s wrong here.”

Maans walked into the front cabin, leaned over to Selma, and stared at Ye Sheng’s heartbeat. “More time. Earthquake is bad news. I have a feeling… We are getting close… Very close.”

Ye Sheng shivered, the pale gold in the pupil disappeared. His heart rate rose rapidly, and his blood became warm again. Most of the snakes had gone back to sleep in his mind, only one of them was still going down, through the darkness into the light!

“The result?” Asked Aki.

“About 40 meters below our feet, there is a huge metal presence, where the ‘snake’ moves very fast because only the metal has such good electrical conductivity.”

“Forty meters down? There are rocks below,” said Aki, “we can’t pierce through 40 meters of rock, and the dragon king Norton may not put his palace under rocks.”

“Ye Sheng, Aki, prepare to get up.” Maans’s voice appeared in their headphone, “There could be a magnitude 5 underwater earthquake tonight, and underwater is now dangerous.”

“Got it. Give it up for now.” Said Ye Sheng, then his face changed. The water was shaking all around, and Aki felt it, the tremor came from the rock on which she was standing. The whole bottom was shaking, dust rising from the bottom blocking her view.

“Underwater earthquakes have started… Damn it! Their early warning is too accurate this time!” On the board Moniaher, Maans knew exactly what was happening on the bottom from the sonar chart. He turned to his chief officer and shouted, “Hold the line! Pull them up!”

As the engine turned, the black line, which doubles as a lifeline and a signal line, began to recover. But then Maans heard a crack in the wind and rain outside, the turbine was out of control. Maans’s face changed. It was out of control because there was no pull on it. The lifeline had broken.

Spotlights in such turbid waters were only dim enough to illuminate two pale faces. All Ye Sheng can do is hold Aki tightly. They were falling.

Just now a clear crack quickly approaching from a distance, as if an invisible blade cutting, several meters’ thick rock layer cracked and produced subsidence. The earthquake tore apart the water bottom. Ye Sheng and Aki had no time to react but felt huge water pressure from the top down, like a wave dozens of meters high hitting their heads.

In the water, the pressure on all sides was equal, and the only thing that might cause a sudden increase in pressure above the head was the appearance of a large cavity at the foot. Millions of tons of water are being pumped into the cavity, drawing them and the rock into it. Nanowires are no match for this natural power.

There was dead silence in the cabin. Maans ran his hands through his hair, pulling it back so hard until it hurts.

From the loudspeaker came the hiss of disorganized electric current. The signal was interrupted and life or death was uncertain. The lifeline was also the signal line, which’s the only channel connecting them with Ye Sheng and Aki. He may have lost two of his favourite students, though he was aware of the possibility when a similar incident occurred a decade ago.

The underwater situation is unknown. Should he send someone to explore and rescue? Or give up like the Greenland Ice Sea? Maans thought nervously.

Scene 4: The Bronze City (1)

“Hello panda!” Said Nuo Nuo seriously.

With two big black eyes, Lu Mingfei rushed into the library on the second floor of the classroom. What came into his eyes was two long legs in jeans, dangling around the table, and a pair of familiar purple and gold Mary Jane shoes. Nuo Nuo sat on the table, pointing at his nose.

Lu Mingfei did not expect Nuo Nuo will take the initiative to talk to people, he was overexcited, “Sorry, yesterday I blew up your boyfriend somehow.”

Someone in the classroom hissed immediately, and Lu Mingfei just mentioned what he just said was really bad.

“Why did you blow up him and say sorry to me?” Nuo Nuo shrugged. “Go to your seat. It’s going to start. The invigilator was Professor Manstein of the disciplinary committee, I’ll take the papers.”

Professor Manstein flashed out from the side, glanced coldly at Lu Mingfei and moved his sight to the watch, “All of you are here. Now I’ll tell you the examination rules!”

“Cheating is forbidden, violators will be disqualified! Don’t try to peek at others’ papers, the camera covers the whole classroom, there is no dead corner! Don’t try to carry electronic communication devices, radio waves are also monitored in the classroom! I know you’re all geniuses, but I can tell you that people who are even more talented than you have taken tests in this classroom, and every cheating method you can think of now has been tried…” Professor Manstein’s cadence was commanding.

Everyone has a name card in front of the seat, Lu Mingfei’s name card is “Ricardo. M. Lu”.

Lu Mingfei was stunned for a moment and realized that this was his official English name. He looked up and saw Nuo Nuo staring out the window with her arms around the chest. Lu Mingfei thinks those cards were set by Nuo Nuo, she is the first person to call him “Ricardo” in the world, she made it casually. This is a very capricious girl, she called him Ricardo, she’ll keep calling him like that.

He also looked sideways out of the window and suddenly realized that it was a fine day. The rising sun rose above the clouds and spread itself flat against them, casting shadows on the walnut desks and tinting the room with a light blush.

His heart was stirred slightly, maybe the good weather dispelled his bad mood, maybe it’s the first time he had his formal English name.

“Then…… Ricardo.” He said to himself.

It was his first official day at Cassel, and it looked like a good sign. He bared his teeth as he suddenly felt that he could still figure it out.

Remembering how little he knew of the new students, he craned his neck to look around. The students come from all over the world, with different skin tones, different faces and the uniform of Cassel College. There were a few beautiful girls and they looked good.

“My name is Kieran, President of the Freshman Fraternity. Nice to meet you, Lu Mingfei. Our ‘S’, can you sign for me?” The boy at his right side turned to shake his hand. He looks like an Indian with a handsome face, dark curly hair and black and white eyes, like a Bollywood movie star.

“Me?” It’s the first time he was asked for the first time personal signature, Lu Mingfei cannot help but feel some proud and shy, “My handwriting sucks.”

Kieran handed a pen and a notebook to Lu Mingfei. Lu Mingfei can’t resist it and left his own ghost-like handwriting on it.

“I would like to invite you to join the freshman fraternity and… “

“Well, gentlemen, this is no time for social. If you don’t pass the 3E exam, you won’t need to develop a network at this school.” Professor Manstein interrupted. “Before you start, please turn off your cell phone and put it on the corner of the table with your student id.”

All kinds of shutdown noise throughout the classroom, only Lu Mingfei had nothing to do. In his eighteen years of life, he only briefly had an N96. He looked at other people’s mobile phones, feeling ashamed and thinking that if he could pass the exam, he should draw some money from his scholarship to buy a mobile phone for himself. Then he saw a nearly transparent hand stretched out in front of him, pushing an expensive Vertu phone to the table.

For the first time, Lu Mingfei saw this handmade top mobile phone, which worth at least tens of thousands of RMB. He wanted to see a few more eyes, but his sight was dragged by the owner of the phone.

It was a small girl sitting in a corner back to him, her skin was white and cold. After taking off her school uniform, she wore a low-necked white T-shirt, and her blond hair, which was so pale that it was almost pure white, was braided and tied up in a bun on the top of her head, revealing the long neck. She looks like an ice sculpture.

Lu Mingfei’s heart jumped and having the feeling that he had seen this girl somewhere. But he knew he could never know a girl like this. He had seen only a handful of blondes before he entered Cassel.

The black curtain walls were silently moved from the mezzanine of the carved wooden windows, and all the windows were closed. The room lights were lit, Nuo Nuo walked down the space handing out A4 test papers and a sharpened pencil to each freshman.

The examination paper was blank.

There were gasps. The blank paper surprised everyone and someone raised his hand.

“No doubt, there was nothing wrong with the paper. I’ll be outside the classroom if you have any questions. Discussions are not forbidden, as long as you do not copy others’ answers.” Professor Manstein said. “Good luck.”

Professor Manstein and Nuo Nuo left the classroom. As the door closed, the students looked left and right, whispering, like ants on a hot pan. They can’t copy other people’s answers. They don’t even have questions. Where does the answer come from?

At this point, the system started playing a rock song, Michael Jackson’s Beat it.

The students looked at each other, and they were all silly.

There was only one exception, Lu Mingfei. He had known what happened.

“They’ll cover up the dragon language with strong music. You have to concentrate and listen carefully to one of the sub-melodies in the bass area, which is the dragon mantra. Others will have the resonance of the ‘spiritual vision’ effect, there will be abnormal performance. Do not panic, it’s ok if there’s no resonate or no vision. After listening, draw my answers.” Fingel’s words have now comes true.

Lu Mingfei quietly rolled up his sleeve with a row of eight small painting drawing by the ballpoint pen. These were the answers to eight questions, and the abstract pictures were so difficult to remember that he had to make small strips. The original solution to the high-tech invigilators worked best: he could fake a scratch, cover his arms with his body to hide from the cameras, and destroy evidence quickly by spitting into the palm of his hand. Lu Mingfei learned this trick from Su Xiaoqiang. She copied the paper on her thigh, and then went to the exam in a short skirt. The teacher knew where the evidence is, but he didn’t dare to expose it.

He straightened up his quivering ears, and sure enough, he heard under Michael Jackson’s high, bright voice, someone was singing something in a low voice. Like a curse, like a chant.

“Speaking Spirit – Prophet.” Hearing halfway, he understood and began to draw on white paper immediately.

“Truly a unique ‘S’ in the freshman class, your composure proves your ability once again.” Kieran said beside him, “I don’t have a clue. Maybe I won’t be able to pass the 3E. In that case, I have something to ask you.”

“No, no, I’m just drawing ducks.” Lu Mingfei tried to hide, the answer to the first question is really like countless small ducks together.

“I want you to lead the Freshman Fraternity.” Kieran ignored his ducks.

“What?” Lu Mingfei didn’t think it had anything to do with him.

“The Lionheart and the Students’ Union are pulling people from the freshman class, but we freshmen shouldn’t be separated. I always believe that we will bring a new feeling to this campus, but we lack a leader like Caesar or Chu Zihang, my ability is insufficient, but you can!” Kieran said.

“Don’t suddenly put out this facial expression ok? You make me feel that you are the dying Mufasa and I’m Rafiki, but I am just a passer-by!” Lu Mingfei waved, is there any relationship between him and the “new feeling”?

Kieran was silent for a moment. His pupils showed disappointment. Tears welled up in his eyes and flowed down silently.

Lu Mingfei was scared, “Dude… Don’t cry, we can discuss it later… Although I also know Simba cried so animals helped him, but you can’t just cry… I want to tell you that Rafiki lives next door to me and I’m only a mortal…”

“So… That’s it.” Kieran still shed tears, revealing a faint smile.

“You finally understand, that’s good.” Said Lu Mingfei.

Kieran wiped away his tears, his clear eyes show heavy, piercing sorrow. No longer talk with Lu Mingfei, he bent his head and sketched on white paper. His pen was rustling, the contorted lines grew like a fast-growing forest. As he sobbed in a low voice, the pencil kept running, people who did not know him might think he was writing a suicide note.

“He didn’t realize it, he just… had the Spiritual Vision!” Lu Mingfei suddenly understood and looked around.

The students are no longer whispering to each other, the atmosphere in the classroom become weird. Some sit as if their whole family had died; some people are shuffling in the corridor with empty eyes as if walking dead; a girl jumped onto the platform, drawing and writing on the whiteboard, but she didn’t realize that she had run out of ink; another charming girl shouted hallelujah, her face was filled with joy. It was obvious that she had practiced and danced beautifully, but it was spooky that she was not dancing alone as if a non-existed man was holding her hand and dancing with her, and she threw her cutest laugh to that air.

The students danced with each other but didn’t interrupt each other, which made Lu Mingfei sweating.

The world is becoming mad, but not with him.

The only exception was the girl sculpted in ice. In the dance of demons, only she’s quiet. She sat as straight as bamboo, as normal as Lu Mingfei.

Strangely normal.

“According to the time, the resonance has emerged?” Yasushi Tomiyama grabbed the medical kit in his chest with serious written over his face, “I’m ready. If the shock is too severe, I can go in at any time.”

“They should hold up. The quality of the students selected this year looks good,” Professor Manstein said. “Oh, Nuo Nuo, I remember you were very calm when you had your 3E exam. It seems that Spiritual Vision is nothing new to you.

“Because my first vision occurred when I was very young, I got used to it when I took the 3E exam.” Nuo Nuo said.

“When was the first scene?”

“My mother was lying in bed when a shadow came and took her soul away. She was dead.” Nuo Nuo said.

“Oh? It’s rare to see a vision that has such a strong sense of reality. What most people see is just a mess of lines and some indescribable faces.” Professor Manstein was curious.

“Truer than you think, not only did I see someone take my mother’s soul… And saw the man’s face.” Nuo Nuo whispered, leaning against the wall and looking sideways down the aisle.

“Concentrate, concentrate! Victory is at hand!” Lu Mingfei has finished seven questions.

As it turned out, Fingel is such a good profiteer that Cassel College really rearranged the exam questions from eight years ago.

Lu Mingfei has no idea how many questions did Kieran got, but he smiled tearfully and was very sad all the time. He talked about his painful family background to Lu Mingfei, about the fact that he was born in a slum in Queensland when his father was an alcoholic Indian doctor, and often beat and cursed him and his mother. Speaking of his poor grandmother in the back of the house to plant the pomegranate tree, and she died before the pomegranate tree grew ripe.

Lu Mingfei was annoyed by him, but the fraternity president had so many sincere feelings, let him not dare to interrupt.

When he finished the eighth question, he mumbled to Kieran and peeped at the girl. He was a little skeptical that there would be a second normal person in the room beside him, and that there would be a second “pseudo dragon” in the room?

A person sat on the desk behind the girl, looking at Lu Mingfei. That’s a cute boy, dangling a pair of legs, wearing white small shoes, a small black suit, a white silk scarf with a pair of light gold pupils.

Why is he here? Lu Mingfei surprised, the ghost-like boy appeared again, how did he enter the examination room? Or was he actually hidden among the students?

The boy waved slowly to Lu Mingfei, with a faint, angelic smile. The afternoon sun shone behind him, and his long shadow fell on Lu Mingfei. Lu Mingfei felt that he had no way to refuse to choose, he pushed himself away from the desk and went to the boy step by step, finally holding the boy’s hand. The boy jumped down from the desk, walking gently, leading the way to the window, like a man and a woman in a court dance. Lu Mingfei felt that he was taking the women’s step, and the boy dominated the rhythm between them.

The boy landed lightly on the windowsill and sat with his legs dangling outside. Lu Mingfei sat down beside him doubtfully. He looked at the boy carefully by the light of the setting sun. Lu Mingfei had never seen any big boy like him. He’s so beautiful, round face, with a kind of boyish between boys and girls. Every move of him is gentle, elegant as if he had never stepped on the dust. He leans on the window frame that filled green cane to overlook, and his golden pupils were coloured to pale-red, not as cold and severe as Chu Zihang’s golden pupils.

The silence is unbearable to break, Cassel under the setting sun of looks like a painting.

“Hey, my name is Lu Mingfei.” Lu Mingfei thought about it and decided to say hello.

“My name is Lu Mingze.” The boy looked far away and said softly.

Lu MingFei thought he was joking, he knew Lu Mingze, that’s his cousin living with him in a room and entering the same high school. Had a lovely childhood, but now both his height and weight are 160 and having a face of acne at puberty. He cannot find a girlfriend in school, so he wrote a lot of desperate sad sentences to attract girls on the Internet. This boy looks not like Lu Mingze at all, not even one similarity.

“Sunset? Are you online?” The boy turned to look at Lu Mingfei.

Lu Mingfei was so surprised that he almost jumped. “Sunset ” is his name in QQ, he used this ID to flirt with Lu Mingze. Every time Lu Mingze sees he’s online he will say this sentence: “Sunset? Are you online?”

A simple greeting, every time Lu Mingze typed this on the screen will let Lu Mingfei feel a very urgent expectation. The boy said the same word, but gave Lu Mingfei a completely different feeling, as if he knew you will come, there, at that moment.

“Who the hell are you?” Lu Mingfei’s voice was a little trembled.

“It doesn’t matter. This is your Spiritual Vision. Everyone’s scene is different, but we all see the things we care about the most in our hearts. You see me in your Spiritual Vision, which means I’m the one you care about the most,” said the boy, who gave his name as Lu Mingze. “it’s a great honour.”

“Don’t be funny, aren’t all the things in the Spiritual Vision… Messy lines? Look at you… Not even your hairs are messy!”

“This time you called me, ask yourself if you want to know why do you see me. Others are very sad, you are not sad?” Lu Mingze turned his head and glanced at the sad or happy people in the classroom. They sat on the windowsill like audiences in a surrealist stage play.

“I have no feeling if the true ‘Spiritual Vision’ will cause sadness, why I’m not sad when I see you?” Said Lu Mingfei.

“They were really sad because they saw the deepest part of themselves. What was the deepest part of you?” Lu Mingze stretched out a finger and poked Lu Mingfei’s chest.

“Deeper than heart… That goes to the stomach.” Lu Mingfei couldn’t help saying stupid things.

“Humans are stupid things, and so are you. The only difference between you and them is that you are trying to make yourself stupid deliberately.” Lu Mingze said lightly, “You are not sad, because I am sad for you. Cruel, isn’t it?”

He said that at Lu Mingfei, smiling brightly in the sunshine.

“We… Is it an emotional discussion of love between two men? I’m sad for you… Your line is very romantic, don’t you think?” Lu Mingfei felt goosebumps all over his body.

Lu Mingze paid no attention to him. He was watching the sunset in a daze silently, in the last light, two lines of tears across the boy’s cheek.

Lu Mingfei felt his heart was suddenly pinched by a hand. For a moment he could feel the great sadness of the boy, like a gush of cold water that was about to cover him. Not romance, not presence, the boy’s grief was strong, fierce and overbearing.

“I hate it when you sit next to me now.” Lu Mingze said, suddenly raised his legs to kick Lu Mingfei.

Lu Mingfei lost his balance and fell off the windowsill. He found himself not sitting on the second-floor window of the library, but on the roof of an obelisk. Under is not the grassy grounds of Cassel College, but jagged stones that can kill him. He tried to grab at something with both hands, but he couldn’t. All he could touch was air.

Above him, Lu Mingze stood silently on top of the obelisk, which pointed to heaven like a spear. Behind him was a huge sunset. He’s waving goodbye to him with no expressionless on his beautiful face.

A moment seems to have lightning through Lu Mingfei’s brain, a screen flashed ferociously… On a cold, rainy night, on a stone flower bed, raindrops fell from the leaves overhead. He and the boy, or his brother, Lu Mingze, sat in the dark, hugging each other.

“My God! I wouldn’t like a man… “

Scene 3: The Dictator (4)

“Ye Sheng and Aki, the strongest combination of young people in the Executive Department. The principle’s arrangements should not go wrong.”

“Nor is he blameless, such as… Ten years ago.” The man said faintly.

“It’s been ten years, don’t take it too much to heart. Although we lost a lot, we still won.”

“But only I came back alive.” The man shook the beer bottle.

“We’re all looking at you like the good old days!” EVA put her hand on the man’s shoulder.

Several top-down lights appeared at the same time around the man, and in each of them stood a translucent figure. There was a leather girl with short red hair, an indifferent boy with dark glasses, a man in black with priestly faces, a charming girl with long, crooked hair, and EVA. There were six of them, all of whom put their hands on the man’s shoulder. They happened to laugh together, like the smile on an old photo, it’s still as bright as before after many years.

The man bowed his head and drank in silence. He did not look at them or speak.

“EVA, don’t play this game, ok?” The man shook his head. “They’re not here. They are sleeping under the ice sea thousands of miles away, in those metal diving suits… Not to die, but never to return.”

The rest of the beam had disappeared, leaving EVA, who put out her empty hand and stroked the man’s cheek.

“Any news from ‘the prince’? “The man asked.

“If he had lived, he would have been ‘the emperor’. But I haven’t heard from him.”

“Of course he’s still alive. I can still smell his rancid smell. And if he dies, how am I going to kill him myself?” The man uttered the cruellest words in the coldest tone.

“If the only way to reassure you is to kill him,” EVA whispered, “Kill him then… I’ll wait for your news.”

The man nodded and pulled his hand away from the void. He was holding the air before. He drank his beer and went out. Infrared, invisible to the naked eye, but dense as the spider’s web went off, the scanning system shut down, the camera system automatically shut down, the red flash warning lights went to green, high voltage walkway ground was cut off… The security system entered a brief sleep state again.

“Oh, the thing about Lu Mingfei, no problem right?” He remembered the incident and turned around.

“No problem, just covering up for a new student. I’ve done more bad things for you than that,” EVA smiled. “but can I ask you why?”

“Looks like a good kid,” the man smiled. “I have other reasons. I’ll tell you when I prove them myself.”

He turned away, took a couple of steps and stopped again, He went to Adams in the corner, crouched down and said, “Hey, buddy, can you give me two coins to let me buy a coke… I gave you all the money… You see, money is just a toy to you, and there are no supermarkets or coke machines… “

Adams’s expression changed. He clutched the coins tightly and showed the classic stingy look.

“Adams, give your brother two coins,” EVA said.

Adams’ expression changed again, and, aggrieved, he carefully selected two old ones from those coins and handed them to the man.

“What a niggard!” The man slapped it hard on the head. Unable to withstand the force, the alchemical framework of the puppet robot crumbled into a pile of metal batons and pellets.

The man tossed two coins and drank his beer. EVA silently looked at his strapping and lonely figure. Compared with ten years ago, his back was not that straight.

The metal door opened and closed, and the man was gone. The girl in the beam shed tears silently.

The stick and the ball rolled together, Adams took shape again. He ran up to EVA with the sound of “hip hip hip hip”. Seeing her imaginary tears, it was stunning. After a while, it suddenly raised his hands over its head waving, shaking its body to do an ugly dance, shouting, “EVA, happy! EVA, happy! EVA, happy!”

The coins clanged on the floor, and the girl’s tears fell onto the metal floor in a glistening blue light.

“A freshman, in one day, took six of the top ten headlines of the day, which was really unthinkable before.”

“He shot Caesar and Chu Zihang, if his gun had been filled with live ammunition instead of Frigg bullets…”

“Shocking news, ‘S’ class student Lu Mingfei has no resonance for the dragon king incantatory text, the school is looking for the reason!”

“To whom does the crown of the day of liberty belong? Who blew up Caesar and then blew up Chu Zihang?”

Professor Manstein shook his head and shut down the discussion board page of the Cassel academy network. Tonight is probably a sleepless night, the number of online rushed to a new peak, the whole college students and even the pseudonym of the teacher are discussing the new student named Lu Mingfei. Does a new ‘S’ bring hope, danger, or just a joke?

Manstein was also a little confused, the white king guess may not be reliable. After all, it is just a guess, so far there is no record of white king generation being found.

He could only feel instinctively worried about Lu Mingfei who shot Caesar and Chu Zihang.

He turned off the light, sat alone in the dark for a while, and turned on his cell phone to make a call — “Father.”

The forum continues to refresh at high speed, and the message keeps moving.

“Maybe tomorrow he will suffer in 3E. I think he is not very good, maybe the principle misjudged his level.” Someone left a message.

“Maybe he has no dragon blood, so he is not afraid of the golden pupils of Chu Zihang.”

“His greatest strength is competitive games. What a funny specialty?”

“Hey! Why don’t we make a bet, who would wager Lu Mingfei can’t pass the 3E exam?” With the administrator’s logo on his message, Fingel’s presence created a buzz. This is a waste student who can’t graduate in 8 years. He is a popular figure on the website of Cassel College who is in charge of the news channel and can always produce some hot news.

“I think there’ll be a few people on his side. So, I would like to have a good start. 100 bucks, bet he can pass the exam!” Fingel launched the theme of the voting area.

“Fingel, are you going to bet your chances to pay your loan back on your roommate?” Some people laughed.

The stakes on the “No” side shot up to more than $20,000, while the “Yes” side still only had Fingel’s $100. In a single night, the background information of Lu Mingfei was dug up. Funny high school grades, he never had a girlfriend because no one took a fancy to him, has no sense of direction, the only specialty is playing games, was detained dozens of pirated discs in the custom… No matter how they analyze it, he’s not like the “S” students who are said to have the greatest potential for bloodline purity.

“Doesn’t anyone have a little gambling spirit? You can’t play like this,” Fingel complained. “You’re going to win my 100 bucks. The odds are 1 to 130 that he can’t pass the test!”

“I bet $500 that Lu Mingfei can pass the exam.” The person whose ID is “Murasame” left a message.

For a moment, the discussion area was silent. That was the ID of Chu Zihang. The silent Lionheart President, known as the “A+” level. The boy does not like the garrulous discussion. But he made an exception to gamble, bet 500 dollars bet on Lu Mingfei can pass the exam.

“I bet $5,000.” Someone with the ID “Dictator” left a message.

“Caesar! “One person wrote to exclaim.

“That he can’t pass the examination.” When Caesar finished, he went offline, leaving a frozen discussion area temporarily.

It was the beginning of another competition. If there is such a thing as natural enemies in the world, Caesar and Chu Zihang must be. The two of them never agreed on anything in the students’ memory. But one thing finally happened today. After “freedom day” was magically ended with two shots from the freshman, the Student Union and the Lionheart both announced their approval of the result.

They all admit they lost to a bum? Lost one year’s use of the Norton Hall and the right to pursue any girl in the college without being rejected? The students all felt that the two men had been a little too generous. Of course, they two need not worry about the problem of the schoolgirl, Chu Zihang is silent and incoming and kept single, he seems has no interest in any of the girls, while Caesar had had famous Nuo Nuo.

Caesar, holding a wireless keyboard, lay on the sofa in the Amber Hall, watching the huge projection screen as the stakes rose. He logged in as “Sonic” after logging out of his “Dictator” ID, which remained silent in the corner of the online list.

Nuo Nuo was leaning against the wall behind him, holding a cup of iced coffee. “You do care Lu Mingfei.”

“Yes, I’m not sure if he will pass the 3E exam tomorrow.” Caesar confessed, “I bet he can’t because I never bet with Chu Zihang on the same side.”

“I know, 5,000 dollars is nothing to you.” Nuo Nuo put down the coffee and grabbed her bag, “Gotta go. I’m taking Professor Manstein’s class this semester. I have to read lots of books. Call me if there’s something.”

“Wouldn’t it be crowded to read in such a small dorm with Susie? And she gave you a shot in the middle of the day… She can do anything for Chu Zihang.” Caesar stretched out his hand as if to stop Nuo Nuo. “Stay here. Amber Hall is more comfortable than Norton Hall.”

Nuo Nuo turned at the door and rolled her eyes at Caesar.

Caesar threw up his hands in a rush of innocence. “I mean… Guest room! I have many guest rooms!”

“In fact, the last thing I like about you is that you rent a villa on campus. Don’t you think it’s empty?” Nuo Nuo said, “I don’t like your Bugatti Veyron either.”

“The good news is I lost it today.” Caesar shrugged.

“Ok.” Nuo Nuo took the door and left. Caesar put his finger into the brilliant golden hair and scratched his head with a helpless expression.

“Three more minutes! If you have not placed your bets, please place them immediately. All bets must be paid into my account before the 3E exam tomorrow. I will manage them for you.” Fingel was curled up on the couch in the activity room of Flat 1, with bouncing fingers on the keyboard. A dozen students stood around him, looking serious and staring at the screen.

“The power of news is immense! I first put out the message that Lu Mingfei could not resonate with dragon language, and then bet on whether he could pass 3E.” Fingal clapped his hands and exulted, “And then the backroom guys bet Lu Mingfei can pass, we can get at least five times profit, I was moved by myself. Are the stakes ready?”

“Ready.” The mathematician boy replied.

“Be sure to place your bets near the end, or they’ll find out.”

“Understood. 34 seconds to go! I have synced to the system time!” Elite members of the campus loan sharks opened the countdown software on their laptops and gave their answers with the rigour of a scientist.

“Three to four seconds in advance, the disk is locked, the last few seconds should be the most concentrated time for capital injection, the network may be a little slow.” Someone reminded.

Bets were being placed on both sides at high speed, new bets were being added every second, the closing time was getting closer, and everyone’s heart was beating as fast as traders on a stock exchange.

“10,9,8,7,6,5,4,” the countdown man said, licking slightly dry lips.

“Go! Lock the entrance!” With a sweep of his hand, Fingel was striking.

“0.” The countdown man shouted, “Capital injection successful! We won!”

“Wait a minute! The amount of money bet on Lu Mingfei is… 39,400. At the last second, someone added 20,000…” A voice trembled.

“20000!!!!!” Fingel exclaimed. “Login using my admin ID and find out who he is!”

A minute later, Fingel stared at his laptop. The inputted ID clearly displayed on the screen, under his real name and without disguise — Gard Rudolph Manstein. And then there’s the title: “Professor.”

“The chairman of the Disciplinary Committee take part in… Didn’t he catch cheating?” Fingel got cold sweat on his head.

At this moment, Lu Mingfei is copying the answer sheet left to him by Fingel under the lamp, one stroke at a time. Fingel said he didn’t want to disturb his efforts, and went out with a big smile on his face, leaving him alone in the empty dormitory. It was less than four hours before dawn, and within four hours he had to copy and memorize all eight pictures. The lines were like a forest of branches, not meant to be remembered.

Remember, though, that weariness crept up like rising tides.

Are those right or not? Maybe this $2,500 answer sheet is bullshit? Where in the world would have tests about how to draw languages? What reason could he have for believing in the sometimes off-line and sometimes devious Fingel? He took advantage of him from start. His mind was a mess. But what happens after 3E? Can he get out alive in a genius academy of reptilian lineages? What about crawling out? All over the world slaying dragons?

At this moment in distant China should be morning, Chen Wenwen wearing a white skirt should hold hands with her new boyfriend, walking on the road that goes to a normal university?

The night Nuo Nuo drove him up the highway, he thought he had found his way out, but he turned out still to be a tiny firefly, flying aimlessly with the others.

He sat on the bed with his knees folded. He thought for a long time.

He just wanted to see her, no matter what happened.

Scene 3: The Dictator (3)

“The fact that students are trying to steal exam questions has nothing to do with the Executive Department. All that we care is pure blood dragons.” Schneider ignored Professor Manstein’s smile completely, “Norma’s security system is unbreakable. It’s designed to be an eternal loop.”

“If the dragons plan to have an invasion, the target should not be the host room, right?” Guderian said.

“I don’t know, dragons can’t be understood, but vigilance is never wrong.” Schneider raised his voice. “Norma, why is the security system dormant?”

The crystal chandelier above the hall suddenly lit up, and the clear brilliance drove away the dark and cold atmosphere. The stately library hall is lined with carved cherry bookshelves, displaying hundreds of thousands of reference books. Different areas are marked on the bookshelves with brass nameplates, while the long cherry-wood table is covered with all-green lamps. Now they were all lit up, no more shadow was left in the hall.

“Professor Von Schneider, Professor Manstein, Professor Guderian, this is a routine sweep, the garbage data is being swept away. I suspended the security system, turned on the data mask, and sent out the junk data.” A calm female voice appeared, “In short, I opened the door and took out the garbage.”

“Is there that much redundant data? Do you need to clean up late at night? When you open the door, you may make a mistake. It should be done in the presence of other people.” Said Professor Schneider.

“Before dragons learn how to use computers, I think I’m safe,” Norma said.

“They’re very quick learners, you have to be careful,” Schneider said, apparently he’s more friendly to Norma than to his two colleagues. “How much longer will it take to clean up the data?”

“Just finished, I have restarted the security system. The next time I take out the garbage is seventeen years from now. I’ll be absolutely safe from now on.”

“Sounds like I don’t have to check the library at night in 17 years.” Professor Schneider grinned hoarsely. “Good night, madam.”

“Good night, gentlemen.” All the lamps on the crystal chandelier and table dimmed, leaving only a few warm yellow wall lamps.

Schneider turned to leave. But he suddenly looked back at Guderian and Manstein. “The access records show that you two have just entered the ancient books section, which has high securing level documents. What kind of academic problems make you study ancient books here late at night?”

Guderian gets goosebumps under Schneider’s dull, cold eyes. He looked at Manstein with an appealing look. Manstein was still holding on to his phone, minutes before he tried to call the principal to report the “White King progeny”.

“What’s the matter?” Asked Schneider coldly.

Guderian had cold sweat on his forehead, he was afraid of Manstein to say things about Lu Mingfei. But he wasn’t much of a liar himself, as Manstein said, he couldn’t help scratching his head when he lied. Schneider is not a fool, and he was also a brilliant scholar before he led the Executive Department.

“The white king.” Whispered Manstein.

There was a buzz in Guderian’s head. It’s gone. All gone.

“White king?” Schneider’s eyes widened. The name obviously grabbed his focus.

“New speculation,” Manstein whispered, leaning close to Schneider’s ear. “the white king may be a female!”

“Female?” Schneider’s eyes widened more and he pondered. “How can you come to this conclusion?”

Guderian looked blankly at two of them.

“I have been thinking, the dragon civil war is for what. As a human monarch, he fought for land, gold or women. What was the purpose of the dragon civil war? Land and gold are not important to the dragon race, so is it possible to start a war for the females?” Manstein said serious and eloquent.

“Well!” Schneider nodded. “Very new topic.”

“The battle of the sexes, what an important motif in the history of mankind! We never thought that maybe the conflict between the white king and the black king was not about power, but about gender. We can cite many examples of monogamy in power at the same time, but different positions lead to serious differences, such as…” Manstein suddenly stopped. “Well… “

“Like Hillary and Clinton!” Schneider said.

“Reasonable! Hillary and Clinton!” Manstein tapped Schneider’s shoulder with big strength. “Imagine a subject like this. Suppose that the black king created the white king in order to find himself a wife, and the daughter would marry the father, which is very common in Greek mythology. Their gender conflict eventually led to a break.”

“It’s a little too humanized, but shouldn’t we be thinking about adding couple’s life into selective course as well?” Schneider mused.

“Very reasonable!” Manstein said, “Why don’t the three of us share the project, but when we publish the paper, do you ask to be the first name?”

“No, no, no, I never meant it.” Schneider waved his hand. “I’m just interested in this topic. Good entry point!”

“How about we sort out the detailed information and discuss it together?” Said Manstein gravely.

“Good, good, very interesting. Such topics are worth staying up for.” Schneider and Manstein shook hands, turned and walked away, brooding all the way until he’s gone in the distant darkness.

“Is the white king a female?” Guderian looked at Manstein.

“Just made up,” interrupted Professor Manstein impatiently. “I have to throw out something new and interesting for Schneider to think about, or we’ll have to explain why the classified files were used late at night.”

“But what you just said makes sense…” Said Guderian.

“Enough!” Manstein covered his old friend’s mouth. “Whether the white king is a male dragon or a female dragon is uncertain, but I would like to give your student Lu Mingfei a chance. Tomorrow is the 3E examination, the difference between the speaking spirit of black king descendant’s and the white king descendant’s is very big. If Lu Mingfei is a black king descendant, he will do well. Then forget all my supposition.”

“If he… Didn’t pass?” Guderian asked.

Manstein sighed. “Then he has to be reported to the principal, Guderian… I know your character, but you must know that we have no right to be selfish.”

“All right,” Guderian sighed, “but thank you.”

“It’s nothing. You’re right. If I’m Lu Mingfei, I don’t want to be treated like an outlier.” Manstein said, “We’ve all been through this, I hope it doesn’t happen to kids.”

Guderian finally left, pulling the handle of the cherry-wood door with a sudden thought. He had locked the door when he entered the library, but when Manstein opened it for Schneider, he did not seem to turn the brass handle three times in the opposite direction… But he was too tired to remember. Then he shook his head and closed the door.

Forty metres below the library, a shadow sat with his hands folded in a swivel chair and his head bowed. There’s only light with screens, which are not enough to show his face hidden in the shadows.

“Everyone else left, and in the interval between the security system’s sleeping process, the camera doesn’t work, you go in and there’s no recording.” It’s Norma’s voice. “When you leave later, I’ll put the security system to sleep again. Any problem?”

“Can’t I see my old friend?” The man in the swivel chair smiled. His chin, which had just been scraped, was livid. “Enter the EVA Personality Activation Program.”

“Why do you care about appearances? Whether it’s Norma’s personality or EVA’s personality, at the deepest level, I’m still me.” Norma said.

The huge screen went dark. In the darkness, there were only a great many little red and green lights flickering. The huge amount of personality data pouring into this super host is like the sea flowing into a river. Hard disk lights, data flow indicators, host frequency indicators were flashing ten times faster than before. At last, the last crazy frequency had taken over the rhythm of the basement.

Suddenly, all the lights went out and the basement was in complete darkness.

A beam of light came down directly overhead and fell in front of the swivel chair. Fluorescent fragments fluttered down in the light, like snow. A girl’s shadow stood in the center of the beam, translucent and shimmering. Her long black hair hung down till her feet, but tips were floating in the air. She was in a silk gown, bare feet and smiling.

“EVA.” The man in the swivel chair slowly reached out and entered the light.

“All you can touch is air. Why do you reach out?” EVA said softly.

“I just like to hold your hand. It’s my habit.” Whispered the man. The fluorescent fragments fell on his palm and vanished.

EVA covered the palm of his hand with a translucent hand, but could not bring any touch. Those are just illusions of light and shadow, and 3D imaging technology retains memories that are long gone. The man closed his hand gently, holding it empty as if he were really holding a girl’s hand.

“Sometimes you used to hold my hand for a dozen hours a day, and when you let it go, it was all sweaty,” EVA said.

“How do I know you’re here if I don’t hold your hand?” The man said.

“You’ve always been such a person. What does power mean for you?” EVA said.

“Loneliness, I guess.”

There was a long silence, and EVA said, “Are you here to talk about something?”

“I want you to do me a favour. I hope that this year’s newly recruited ‘S’ student Lu Mingfei passes the 3E exam, no matter what his potential is.”

“If he really is not of dragon lineage, let him pass the 3E exam to enter the academy may lead to a leak.”

“Just do a friend a favour. It’s not hard for you.”

“It’s not hard for Norma, I should say.” EVA sighed softly.

“Are you Norma?” The man looked at the translucent, petite palm in his hand. “I can’t feel your hand and I always think you are not here.”

“I’m really not here anymore,” EVA said softly. “what you see is just your own memory.”

The man was silent for a long time. “You are omnipotent here. I want a bottle of beer.”

“There’s only hard drives, processors, routers, but no beer. You’ve changed a lot over the years, but still can’t solve the drinking problem?”

“I used to think I would never drink again… Because if I hadn’t gotten drunk that night, maybe I wouldn’t have lost you.” The man’s voice cracked, “But I’ve been drinking all these years because when I don’t, I think of you. I hate memories, it’s hard to tell who you are.”

“You are who you are and never change.”

“Hip hip” noise came from behind the man. He turned with an alert, blue veins on his forearm exposed, like a snake twisted, incomparable strength had been condensed. What he saw was a strange thing. It was a little man formed by metal balls and metal rods about the height of a man’s knee. The parts, which are supposed to be scattered all over the floor, appear to be attracted together by a powerful magnetic force. It even has a funny face like a clown, two metal eyeballs rolled back and forth. Its mouth shows an obsequious grinning, and in its “hand” ’s tray was a cold bottle of Samuel Adams stout.

As the man grabbed the bottle, the little thing pulled out a corkscrew smartly and pop, it opened the cap.

“Have a pleasant evening, Sir.” The little thing’s voice came over the pa system with a barman’s tone.

“It’s a little thing I make when I’m bored, and it’s the only thing that plays with me here.” EVA said, “It’s called Adams.”

“You named it after a beer… Seriously? Or do you think it will be your Adam? It goes well with your EVA.” The man took a sip of the beer and waved to Adams. “You can go, boy.”1)

The little one smiled more sweetly, still holding the tray behind him.

“It likes tips,” EVA said.

“You know I’m poor.” Muttered the man, taking a few quarters from his pocket and dropping them on the tray.

Adams took a happy bow and let out a “hip, hip, hip” sound and flashed into the darkness.

“I wanted to name it with your name, but I’m afraid you’ll mind that,” EVA said.

“Am I that ugly?” The man shrugged. “I’d also like to know the latest plans for the guys in the Executive Department, ok?”

“Is that the real reason what you’re here for?” EVA sighed. “It’s one thing to cover up a new student. It’s another thing to give away the plan of the Executive Department.”

“You’ll tell me, EVA, that you’ve never said no.” The man whispered.

EVA was silent for a moment. “The Executive Department sent four additional teams, Tibet, Xin Jiang, Greenland and Mexico. The closest thing to success so far has been Professor Maans’s group, whose aim was the King of Bronze and Fire, Norton, the noble original, one of the four great monarchs. They will launch the Kui Men project on the Yangtze River. I don’t know the details of the plan. It’s made by the principal himself.”

“Who is involved in Kui Men besides Maans? Norton is one of the best in the first generation, it’s hard to kill him.”

  1. In Germany, EVA means EVE.

Scene 3: The Dictator (2)

“The white king rebellion is the largest rebellion in the history of the dragon race. A third of the dragon race became rebels. After the black king suppressed the rebellion, he recorded the fate of the rebels in a huge bronze pillar that we found in Greenland.” Manstein said, “This means that the Frozen Bronze Table is the history of Nidhogg’s lineage. If the dragons have political considerations, there’s no doubt that the black king will emphasize the rebel leader has been completely destroyed. But as the first generation with the purest dragon lineage, was the soul of the white king destroyed easily? Perhaps it is still alive and resting somewhere, like other dragon kings.”

“We have not yet found any white king generations! The white king was close to human, if Lu Mingfei is the white king blood descendant, it’s not necessarily a bad thing.” Guderian said.

Manstein took the pipe out and took a few breaths, smiled with a wry expression. “Guderian, don’t lie to yourself, both you and I don’t believe that the white king will help mankind. Three principles of the dragon race: First, the dragon race and human beings are completely different, the gap between us and the dragons are far more than the hatred between the black king and the white king. On the Frozen Bronze Table, it says that the white king ‘dyed the silver throne with the blood of untouchables’, implying the violence of the white king. The white king may only use human beings to make up for their own shortcomings. He was created by the black king. Although there is a gap between them, he was always an outlier, and could not really sympathize with humanity.”

The old clock on the wall was ticking, Guderian’s face grew pale and silent.

“We are not whole human beings either,” he said in a low voice after a long time. “Is that important for us, black or white king’s lineage? Do you really want to impose the doctrine of blood on children?”

Professor Manstein was smoking with his pipe vigorously. “Have you considered the consequences of protecting your students? If the white king is what Nidhogg calls an “evil king”, who knows what the descendants of the white king will do to mankind? After bloodline was awakened, Lu Mingfei may become our enemy. The golden dragon pupil of Chu Zihang cannot suppress him, he might have incomparable potential. Who dares to let him live in this college?”

“What are you trying to say?” Guderian looked up sharply and yelled.

“Write a report and send it to the principal.” Muttered Manstein.

Guderian felt a chill in his heart. “What is the result of submitting such a report?”

“Isolation. We will research this student, he cannot be a student and he cannot leave this college. Until the identity is verified. Don’t hesitate, do it now, don’t involve yourself.” Manstein reached into his pocket for the phone and handed it to Guderian.

Guderian was silent for a long time, grabbing Manstein’s hand and closing the phone slowly and forcefully.

“Lu Mingfei…” Professor Guderian paused, and finally uttered the line he had thought of, “Is a very nice boy.”

For a moment Manstein was puzzled. He can’t compare with Guderian on academic researching. From the beginning of the university, he always had to let Guderian help his homework until doctoral graduation. He knows that what his friend says randomly may be loaded with meaning. At this time, he should never be timid.

The ancient clock on the wall “ticked” as Manstein bent his head thoughtfully, time was ticking away.

“You mean… Will the goodness of his human side resist the call of the white king’s blood?” Manstein wasn’t so sure. “Well, I give up. Tell me about your answer.”

Guderian scratched his head. “I… Nothing special. I just remember Nuo Nuo told me that he cried his eyes out in the washroom when he heard the letter from his parents.”

“Does this have anything to do with the white king?”

“No. As a child, I thought he was lonely and kind and a good boy. We can’t take away his chance, can we? Who wants to be a specimen?” Guderian looks into his friend’s eyes. “We all remember our childhood, right? We had been specimens. When the two of us trying to reach out to grasp together across the iron railings… Were you sad?”

Stunned, Manstein lowered his head. He looked at the phone in his hand silently, and the shouted voice came back to his ear through decades:

“Pull away those two mad children! What are they doing?”

“Damn it! Loosen the hand! I warn you not to get yourself into trouble!”

“It’s time for electric treatment! Pull them away! Take him to the therapy room!”

He remembered the pain of the electric shock as if it had been a blade cutting through his body. After every therapy, he would smell the faint smell of burning and felt like he’s going to cry. At that time, he was always looking at the only square window in the brig, longing to fly like a bird, longing for something to drop from the sky and change his life.

Fingel threw the goose’s leg back on the plate, burped and leaned forward. He looked straight at Lu Mingfei, “Do you want the… secret?”

“Secret?” Lu Mingfei stunned.

Fingel lowered his voice. “All tests are questions, questions are invented by people, there must be flaws if it’s invented by people!”

“Senior brother!” Lu Mingfei felt refreshed and changed to the most cordial address. “Do you have a good idea?”

“Mind cheating?” Fingel’s eyes sparkled.

“No… Not at all!”

“You are worthy to be taught!” Fingel praised Lu Mingfei’s resoluteness. “Remember, to get on in this school, we have to have the limit!”

“Limit?” Lu Mingfei could not believe that such a virtuous word would come out of Fingel’s mouth.

“The limit must be minus three meters!” Fingel put his hand on the ground. “That’s it. Three meters down, that’s our limit!”

“That makes perfect sense!” Lu Mingfei was moved by his roommate.

“In a place where there are so many talented and crazy people, we must have a limit, but it can’t be more than minus three meters, or we will be done.” Fingel said with a secrecy look,” A handy tool makes a handyman. If we must cheat, we must have a deep understanding of the object of cheating! Do you know how many dragon language’s sentences have been deciphered so far?”

“Isn’t it in words?”

“Wrong! There are only seventy-six sentences!” Fingel showed the attitude of teaching a lesson. “Language is divided into words and grammar, and when you combine the two, you get an infinite number of sentences. But dragon’s language is a dead language, so far there are only words, but no grammar. The last person in history to understand its grammar was Nicholas Flamel… “

“Ni… Ni what?” Lu Mingfei didn’t remember.

“You idiot. Never mind, don’t remember, just call him… Old Ni! We call him Old Ni!” Said Fingel, waving his hand.” Old Ni lived in Paris, where he was a scribe and an alchemist. He is the only one in recorded history who has refined the ‘philosopher’s stone’!”

“The philosopher’s stone? It sounds so cool.” Said Lu Mingfei.

“Super cool! It’s a little bit more complicated to explain, but to put it simply, ‘the philosopher’s stone’ is the fifth element, the purely spiritual element, that you will learn in the course of ‘Introduction to Alchemy’. Alchemy and Speaking Spirit are the two supports of the dragon’s technology. In the age without science, dragons have performed many miracles through alchemy and speaking spirit. Old Ni was very interesting, he was a scribe but suddenly learned alchemy, the dragon technology. The reason is he found an alchemy manuscript, which records the dragon language’s grammar. Old Ni learned this set of grammar but did not pass it on to others. Instead, he summed up 76 sentences of obscure dragon’s language and passed them on. These are all the sentences we can decipher now. You get the idea? At most, there are only 76 questions.”

“You mean there is a question bank?” Lu Mingfei suddenly understood.

“Right! Let me tell you how to do it. When you enter the examination room, they will only give you a blank sheet of paper and a pencil without any hint. They will play a recording with the recitation of the dragon language. For the dragon blood descendants, it will resonate with them and produce a ‘Spiritual Vision’ effect. Dragon Language is a hieroglyphic, you will ‘see’ amazing scene.”

“See what?”

“Different people are different, often messy lines, tangled snakes, wild plants and so on, you just follow what you see and draw it down.”

“Is this an art exam?” Lu Ming was a little dumbed, “I’m not good at drawing.”

“Stick people level is ok. They don’t test your painting good but see your ‘Spiritual Vision’ effect. The purer of student’s pedigree, they can see more vivid things.” Fingel took out a piece of white paper and drew a quick outline on it with a pencil. It was hard to see that Fingel was a good sketcher. Lu Mingfei watched the pencil lines gradually forming a picture. The picture is extremely abstract, with countless waveforms overlapping, which looks like an ocean at a distance.

“There are a lot of curves in this painting, and if you take parts of it from the curves,” Fingel said, drawing some lines heavily, “it’s the ‘word’ in the dragon language. The person who’s marking it is Norma. She will analyze the thing you draw and find the dragon language in them. This is one of the questions I painted before.”

“Wouldn’t that say… There are seventy-six paintings. Are there any variations base on the seventy-six paintings? I can’t remember it!” The hope of Lu Mingfei that had just been raised was dying.

“Don’t worry. Now, let me reveal the ultimate secret for you!” Fingel giggled, “The biggest flaw in Cassel’s 3E system is that they recycle old papers!”

“Recycle?” Lu Mingfei did not understand.

“A total of eight sets of papers, recycling for eight years and it never changes!”

“Are the professors out of their minds?” Lu Mingfei can’t believe it.

In the domestic Chinese school, the teachers and students, all have the innumerable fighting experience. Chinese university entrance exam will only test a few books, but every high school teacher can give thousands of model examination questions for students! What Chinese teachers practice is like Huang Yaoshi playing Jade Flute Sword Method, there are always a hundred ways; these Cassel college professors seem to practice the Eighteen Dragon Strike with fierce force, but after a set of strikes, they have to start from the beginning. 1)

Fingel struggled. “There are only a few dozen or a hundred people who take the 3E exam every year. They are all geniuses. They graduate in four years and then they must join the Executive Department to explore the relics of the dragon all over the world. How could they remember the test and tell the new students? So an eight-year round is actually safe, but there are always exceptions to the rule,” he said, raising his eyebrows, looking lewd. “Remember? I’ve been in school for eight years!”

“Ahhhh! “Lu Mingfei inspired himself and became extremely excited, “This year and the year you entered Cassel’s exams are exactly the same!”

“3000 dollars of one price, you may pay afterwards. Deduct the 497 pieces that you have already entertained me and cola in Chicago train station for 3 dollars, you still owe me 2501 dollars. I will wipe out oddments, so that’s 2500 dollars to buy this set of examination questions. Do it or not, I will count 10 seconds!” Fingel’s voice was as quick as a bullet, as firm as a drawn sword. “10! 9! 8! …… “

“Wait a minute… Hello! What’s going on here?” Lu Mingfei was surprised.

“7! 6!”

“At least I have to see the goods, dude? You can’t just force me to buy!”

“5! 4!”

“What if the goods are not right? Do you have guarantees? Do you make a receipt?”

“3! 2!”

“Hey, dude! Are you listening to me? Damn it… Done!” Lu Mingfei felt that he was about to collapse. He sat down and gasped for breath.

“At this time only I can help you, you have no choice. Why do you resist?” Fingel drained the sparkling wine in his glass at one gulp and spat out a mouthful of carbon dioxide leisurely. “I knew I had worked hard for eight years for something, today I finally got money for the first time with my knowledge!”

“Bah! Shame! You profiteer!” Lu Mingfei was very angry, “I thought you were the kind of idiot senior wearing depth glasses with knowledge but no girlfriend!”

“Ha! I was once an ‘A’ student as mighty as Caesar! In those good old days, I also had a lot of adoration from schoolgirls, leaving loving emails in my school mailbox!” Fingel patted his thick chest, this Teutonic smiled as the Jewish merchant finished the deal.

“Bachelor uncle will always brag about his debonair history when he was young!” Lu Mingfei was distressed about his $2500 that flew away, and he fought back fiercely.

Fingel lowed his head with depression. “But I thought I was going to graduate with three years of credit and be the youngest executive, so I ignored them… By the time I wanted to talk to them, they had all become executive birds and flown all over the world.”

“A failing dog who keeps repeating grades shouldn’t say that. Even if they don’t fly all over the world they will just say I was blind before and fell in love with Fingel.”

“Dude,” said Fingel, patting Lu Mingfei on the head, “the first lesson you learn in college is that girls like us because they are stupid, and they are more likely to be stupid when they are young than when they grow up, so Lolita is better than big sisters!”

“All right, stop teasing. 2500 dollars right? Now I don’t have them. Can I pay you after I get the scholarship?” Said Lu Mingfei. “And what’re the 497 dollars? How come I don’t remember treating you to such an expensive treat?”

“No problem with late payment. And for $497,” Fingel tapped the goose leg bone on his plate, “it’s half in you and half in me.”

“Isn’t it the college supper service?” Lu Mingfei stunned.

“But they take money! Do you think you can eat free with sterling silver? The most you’ll get for a free meal is a plastic fork!”

“We didn’t pay at all, senior brother!”

“We used your student id card.”

“Student card?” Lu Mingfei did not get it.

“Your student id is also a credit card guaranteed by Citibank. As an ‘S’ noble, your credit limit is as high as $100,000. So pay me, who has only 80 dollars in credit limit, for a meal of 497 dollars, do you think it is very generous?”

“That means… I’ve already owed money?” Lu Mingfei’s heart was bleeding.

“It’s not terrible to owe money,” Fingel reassured him. “you see, my financial situation is more than thirty thousand dollars in negative, and I’m still living pretty well.”

Lu Mingfei covered his face. For this roommate’s calm shameless, he despairs.

At midnight, in the library basement, the red light of the entrance guard flashes at a general frequency, which is the sign of the normal operation of the security system.

It’s very quiet, there’s only the sound of high-speed rotation of the hard disks occasionally. The huge central server is located here, from the ground floor to the underground six, if it exposed to the ground, the central server has the same size as a small building. The highest level of security is enforced here, with the eye mask, voice print and fingerprint identification systems. The outer walls are made by alloy that can resist explosives. Infrared lasers are scanning every area, even the space that can only be drilled by rats.

Footsteps came from far and near, like the sound of iron-shod boots. The flashing frequency of the red light started to rise. As the approaching of the footsteps became higher and higher, the security system failed to identify the identity of the person from the footsteps, and the danger index gradually rose to the threshold value of the alarm.

The footsteps stopped in front of the entrance. Ignoring the eye mask, voice print and fingerprint identification system, the visitor ran a black, unmarked card across the slot.

In an instant, the warning value felt back sharply. The power of the infrared laser scanner and hundreds of cameras was cut off. The warning light of the security system turned green and “Clicking” voice rang slightly. Nine gates to the center server were unlocked at the same time.

On the top floor of the library, Professor Manstein and Professor Guderian looked at each other in silence. Manstein looked down at his watch, but he suddenly stunned. His watch is a monitoring terminal, showing that the security system at the moment went into the sleep mode. But the security system should be a perennial operation and never come to sleep mode.

“Executive Department, Norma’s security system went into hibernation. Send a few people to the library.” Manstein was on the phone, running toward the elevator.

Guderian put down the sealed can and squeezed in time when the elevator door got closed.

When the elevator reached the first floor of the library, Manstein stepped out of the elevator and looked around. The first floor was quite at midnight.

The library of Cassel College is an elegant antique building, with a lobby nearly ten meters high, as magnificent as the Sistine Chapel. Exquisite marble columns support the elegant arch, on the top is the colourful glass window that can see the starry sky. The atrium is paved with visible, water-rubbed granite tiles. The wooden door carved cherry at the end of the walkway was locked at the moment.

There was a knock on the door, and Manstein went to open it. Outside was a tall, thin figure, standing in the shadows, in a solid black suit with a small car in tow.

“Professor Von Schneider, you are here yourself,” Manstein said.

“Maans went to China, so I can only take care of it by myself.” Professor Von Schneider raised his hand in greeting. “I also found Norma’s security system is dormant.”

He went into the library and was exposed to the light. His face was covered in a black mask, a gas pipe led to the cylinder on the car, and his neck was covered with dark red scars. His breathing was deep and thick, like a broken bellow. His iron-gray eyes swept around coldly.

The two professors looked away at the same time. No one in the college would like to look at the eyes of the head of the Executive Department, Von Schneider, as if gaze a knife a few centimetres away.

“The surveillance system did not detect any trace of the intruder.” Schneider glanced over at Manstein. “It’s late at night, and you’re here. Is there anything unusual?”

“Nothing unusual. Tomorrow is the 3E exam. Maybe some students want to hack into Norma’s system to get the exam questions or something.” Manstein managed a forced smile. He’s trying to make it easy. The Executive Department at Cassel is always a little condescending. As the chairman of the ethics committee, which is in charge of students, he doesn’t want to work with the Executive Department, but he has to maintain a little respect for Schneider.

Scene 3: The Dictator (1)

Late at night, in the conference room of Norton Hall.

All members of the student union attended the meeting. The current chairman Caesar sitting on the sofa in front of the fireplace, hands on the chin and stared front. Gattuso family’s phoenix emblem was hanging overhead. The silence had gone on for a long time, almost everyone kept their heads down.

“For the first time in three years, we’re losing access to the Norton Hall, so this is our last meeting here.” Caesar said dryly, “It was an unprecedented defeat for me.”

Depressed came like mountains. After Caesar took the position, they were always the winner of the “freedom day”. Under the leadership of Caesar, the student union is finally able to against the most traditional college brotherhood “Lionheart”. Even there’re Chu Zihang, the so-called “A+” level, Lionheart didn’t take the Norton Hall. But now, they mysteriously lost on a newbie.

“We didn’t lose, it was a shameful war!” A senior committee member said, “We shouldn’t give up the Norton Hall!”

Everyone was excited. The committee members began to whisper that they really lost unjustly.

“Enough!” Caesar raised his hand, his stately voice commanded the noise of the hall.

“I never talk to cowards. Only cowards refuse to admit their defeat.” There’s no expression in Caesar’s cold blue eyes. “Today I don’t want to discuss the reason for failure. Lu Mingfei, an ‘S’ freshman from China, shot Chu Zihang and me. As a third party, he won the ‘freedom day’ this year. We should respect the rules of the game, according to the rules of the game, we lost. Lionheart kept silent, which means Chu Zihang had accepted the results. Can’t you compare with Chu Zihang?”

“I’ve rented the Amber Hall next door as a place for next year’s Student Union. Move our stuff, and here belong to Lu Mingfei since midnight.” Caesar got up and poured himself a glass of cognac. “Isn’t Lu Mingfei preparing for tomorrow’s 3E exam? Do you think he can pass?”

“Caesar, you mean?”

“Just now, a piece of news popped on the campus news network that Lu Mingfei, the ‘S’ level new student, has no resonance with the ‘Speaking Spirit – Emperor’.” Whispered Caesar.

After a moment of silence, surprise flashed over each committee member’s eyes.

“The results of 3E will tell us what the potential of Lu Mingfei is. If he fails, he will be demoted. How can he pass the 3E exam if he has no resonance with speaking spirit?” Caesar looked around at everyone and said, “I’m looking forward to it, and I think Chu Zihang looks forward to it, too. Nuo Nuo, what do you think of Lu Mingfei?”

“That idiot? May directly to ‘Z’, if there’s such a level.” Said Nuo Nuo carelessly, leaning against the wall.

All the committee members smiled at each other. The 3E exam is the first threshold and made all the freshmen nervous. If Lu Mingfei doesn’t pass the exam, his level will plummet, BCDEF, and he’ll be a joke to the whole campus. If a sheep in a lion’s skin went among the lions, and it was exposed to its real identity, it is unbearable to imagine its fate.

Caesar did not smile but looked down and stroked his heart, which was the place where Lu Mingfei shot him.

“This exam is abbreviated EEE, Extraction Evaluation Exam, it means pedigree evaluation exam. It is mainly used to identify the dragon lineage of students. The dragon descendant will have a resonance for the ‘dragon words’, and the resonance will produce a “spiritual vision” effect, which is naturally to see the dragon words emerge in mind.” Fingel explained to Lu Mingfei, “This ability is very important to the dragon descendant. We have supernatural powers known as the ‘Speaking Spirit’, and in our ‘realm’, what we say in dragon language will become the rule. Therefore, ‘language’ is a tool for the dragons to exert their abilities. Students who are not sensitive to dragon’s language are usually not competent enough, after 3E some of them will be kicked out.”

“I was tricked to here and I might be kicked out?” Said Lu Mingfei.

“Just taking a brainwash. You signed a nondisclosure agreement when entering the school, and if you return home now, probably you have to wait another year for the Chinese exam?”

“That’s a bully clause! He wrote it in Latin, I can’t read it!”

It’s a complaint that Professor Guderian can’t hear. The old guy felt helpless for Lu Mingfei has no resonance, claiming that he met the academic problem. Then, he went to the library to look up information.

It was quiet in the dormitory. The window was open. Lu Mingfei sat on the bunk and looked out at the beautiful full moon. It shone on the red tiles of the church steeple, and the cool night wind blew faintly on him. It’s such a beautiful place, but he’s going to be swept away tomorrow.

“Brainwashing is actually pretty fun.” Fingel hung his head from the upper bunk.

“Haven’t tried but in the future. I’m very happy.” Lu Mingfei was super calm.

He guessed that Fingel was trying to frighten him, and the best response was to show him a poker face. For example, during dinner Lu Mingze will suddenly say that I saw Chen Wenwen and a handsome boy shopping bookstore, Chen Wenwen laughed happily! Lu Mingfei would put on a wooden face and say, what? Dude, are you talking to me? Lu Mingze cannot break his thick face, so he can only retreat dispiritedly.

“I remember a Chinese philosopher said, people have pain, because their memory is too good.”

“That’s not a philosopher, it’s Ouyang Feng in Ashes of Time… Take some rest. I will fail tomorrow and come back home, if I can’t have a good university I can only find a job……” Lu Ming sighed for no reason.

“You just sighed.” Said Fingel.

“I just yawned.”

“You don’t want to go back to China.” Said Fingel suddenly.

Lu Mingfei was stunned and did not get Fingel’s idea.

“It’s ok to go back to China. I don’t care.” Lu Mingfei put his hands behind his head and stretched himself on the bed.

Fingel held the mattress on the upper bunk with both hands, turned himself over in a very difficult position, and slowly sat on the lower bunk of Lu Mingfei. “Good for you to figure it out. Cassel College is not good, it looks like a school, but you have to stay with a bunch of reptiles together. After graduating, you have to go everywhere to slaughter dragons, take the risk of being burned by the dragon’s flame. You’re not a hot-blooded teenager, either. You won’t shout something like ‘my destiny is to go around the world and kill a dragon’, right?”

“You’re telling me the same thing. I don’t see any harm in failing the exam and going back to China,” said Lu Mingfei, shrugging toward Fingel’s Aryan silver eyes. “I don’t care.”

“But you just sighed.” Said Fingel again.

Lu Mingfei felt a hot breath rush from the heart, like eating something too spicy to vomit, burning, which let a person forget his face or cover up, but just want to open his mouth to speak.

“What are you talking about? What do you want? Is it any of your business if I go back to China? You haven’t graduated in so many years, are you good? You still owe me money? How many cokes have you had? Do you pay or shut up?” He did not know why he was suddenly furious.

He regretted it when he said it. Fingel may be his only friend here, and Nuo Nuo…… He just shot her boyfriend. So now she’s with that blond guy?

“Dude, you’re out of control.” Fingel tapped him on the shoulder.

Lu Mingfei looked at Fingel and dropped his head.

“You keep yelling that I’m quitting and I’m quitting,” Fingel said. “I just want to learn your idea.”

Lu Mingfei sighed. “Sometimes I really want to drop out, but where can I go if I drop out? By the way, why didn’t you consider dropping out? What’s so good about here? You didn’t graduate in eight years.”

“You will die if you don’t stab people’s scar?”

“Oh, let’s talk about your idea then.”

“Because… Lonely.” Fingel shrugged.

“Loneliness? Are you? Don’t tease! If you can make fun of people like that, you’re just as good as a talk show host.” Lu Mingfei rolled his eyes.

“Are you kidding? A person of dragon ancestry is not a real human. Lineage will give you the power of ‘Speaking Spirit’, and it alienates you from the human race. When you gain the power, you will always remind yourself that you are not an ordinary person. Only staying in the same group can eliminate loneliness. Thus, we will naturally gather together, which is genetically determined. This feeling of loneliness is called ‘Blood Sorrow’.” Fingel said, “Wait, you’re an ‘S’, you never feel very… lonely?”

“Lonely?” Lu Mingfei thought back to his past eighteen years of life, shaking his head, “Not at all.”

Fingel scratched his head. “When we were at the train station in Chicago, I thought you were in a daze. What were you thinking when you were in a daze? Your parents were not nearby; you have no forte with neither girlfriend or good grade; you even don’t have a good friend, that made no sense.” Fingel said, “I’m lonely. I mean when I was a kid.”

“But what if you feel lonely? Is loneliness great? If you feel lonely all the time, it just makes you feel worse.” Lu Mingfei looked up at the ceiling, “No one wants to talk to you, you feel lonely, but still, no one will talk to you.”

Fingel nodded gravely. “You feel lonely… And still, no one will talk to you… It seems to make sense… Man, you are a philosopher.”

Lu Mingfei said, “If I kill some time I won’t feel lonely. A person in a daze is also very interesting, I thought about all the things on my roof before. Swoosh, a night had past.”

“Sounds like you’re having a good time in China. Why don’t you go back? Even the ‘Blood Sorrow’ has no effect on you.”

Lu Mingfei thought for a moment and sighed. He put his elbows on knees and bowed his head.

“But when I’m at home,” he whispered. “there’s nothing. If there was nothing at home, would you go back?” He looked at Fingel.

Fingel also looked at Lu Mingfei. Something flashed from his silver-gray pupils. Sympathy or some lonely secretion? Lu Mingfei can’t tell.

“The wild lily also has its spring, the small wild seed also wants to sprout,” Lu Mingfei shrugged, “although I’m a piece of garbage, I also want people to pay attention to me. I also want to have a girl like me, I also want to have something I can boast… I don’t want to be normal all my life.” When Lu Mingfei said this, his stomach “cooed” twice.

Fingel mentioned it. “Hungry? Why don’t we call and order the supper? Give me your student id card.”

“Are there supper service?” Lu Mingfei roused himself a little bit and took out his student id to hand to Fingel. “It’s not the take-out level?”

“What take-out? Today is the first day you moved in, so of course, we should get a big meal!” Fingel read the number of Lu Mingfei’s student card, “Two Truffle Bread for room 303 in Flat 1, two Foie Gras with lemon juice, a bottle of champagne… Yes, ice bucket and lemon rind, and a roast goose. We’re a little hungry indeed, two herring rolls with cheese please. Thank you.”

Lu Mingfei wiped the corners of his mouth and his stomach rumbled with joy.

Twenty minutes later, a waiter in white wheeled the cart in and opened the sterling silver bowl with the meal Fingel had ordered. The waiter set up tables in the dormitory, laid white tablecloths, arranged silver knives and forks, placed ice bucket with champagne in the center and two frozen dewy glasses in front of them. Finally, the waiter lit a candle and retired. All the while, he just smiled and made no noise.

“Wow! Such a noble school! Although I am ready to drop out tomorrow, with this meal, I am a little shaken.” Lu Mingfei stabbed a fork into the breast of the roast goose and watched as its oil dripped out happily.

“Eat! Human is iron while meal is steel. Human would be in hunger without a meal! We shall eat enough to think about the 3E exam. Do not cross the bridge till you come to it. Go out to rely on brothers. You can support me!” Fingel grabbed the truffle bread and munched, “Go ahead!”

“You are quite fluent in using jargon!” Lu Mingfei was in a good mood, tore off a goose leg and munched on it.

“It’s the best to practice Chinese in BBS!” Fingel took another goose leg and the two smiled brightly over the candlelight.

At the moment, the two gluttons’ teacher, Professor Guderian, was in the library reading documents. Ancient books in bookcase were made from the hardwood against the ceiling. Under the lights, they have the colour of iron. On the shelves were huge, limitless bound books, which contain transparent air-draining clamps that preserved ancient copper scrolls, known as “Ice Sea Scrolls” collectively. These copper scrolls were buried in the ice for thousands of years and had not yet fully understood by people.

Guderian stood at the top of the ladder and stretched his arms to reach a book.

“Late at night to check something?” Someone said under the ladder.

Guderian looked down and saw a spherical object shining like the ceiling light.

“Why are you here this late, Manstein?” Guderian was surprised.

Professor Manstein, chairman of the Discipline Committee, touched his shiny head. “I’ve come to look up information about your new student Lu Mingfei.”

“Oh? Is it? He is well worth studying.” Guderian hesitated and answered vaguely.

“Regard a new student, facing Chu Zihang’s golden pupils, he shot fearlessly. Chu Zihang is the person we found with the highest dragon blood purity, who had shown the physiological characteristic of the dragon race’s ‘dragon pupil’. Under his direct vision, normal people will awe, but your student Lu Mingfei does not have any feeling. Very interesting.” Said Professor Manstein coldly.

“He’s an s-student. Anything can happen to an s-student.” Guderian said quickly.

“You are satisfied with this new student, and you are going to make him the best young man at Cassel, right?” Manstein asked.

“Yeah, yeah,” Guderian said, laughing and grabbing his head. “so that I can get my lifetime professor position.”

“Guderian, from the time we lived in the same dorm at Harvard until now, you scratch your head when you tell a lie. Can’t you show a little restraint?” Manstein sighed.

Guderian’s face suddenly changed. There was a moment’s silence, and he climbed down the ladder honestly. “What do you know?”

“He has no reflection for the “Speaking Spirit – The Emperor”, does he?” Manstein looked Guderian’s eyes, his Aryan blue-gray eyes shone with the metallic cold light.

“How do you know?” Whispered Guderian.

“This news was posted on the campus news website, which is the headline of tonight. It was posted by your student Fingel. ‘Shocking news, level S student Lu Mingfei has no resonance with the secret words of the dragon king, and the college is about to find out the reason!’. Now the whole college knows about it.”

“Fingel?” Guderian was stunned.

“Your specialty is dragon genealogy research. Although you are silly sometimes, you are always better than me in major. You will not make any conclusion about ‘lineage variation’ blindly. You know very well that the dragon lineage is very powerful, after several generations of hybrid, it will not be completely wiped out by the human lineage, no need to mention the example of mutation. But you tell your students that Lu Mingfei is a variation. From that moment you were trying to cover it up, right?”

Guderian nodded. “I chanted to him, ‘SS – The Emperor’, ‘Praise to the awakening of my king, destruction is new life.’ But he has no resonance at all. This is the only case so far that the dragon lineage has no reaction to ‘The Emperor’. And he does have a dragon blood lineage, otherwise, it’s very hard for him to resister under Chu Zihang’s golden dragon pupil. I do not judge him on the basis that the principal has given him an ‘S’.”

“The dragon emperor Nidhogg is the only ancestor of the dragon race, and the ‘SS – Emperor’ is a supreme speaking spirit of his descendants. Whenever his descendants hear this word, they will feel the call of the dragon emperor. But Lu Mingfei said you’re singing. This is definitely not a small thing.”

Guderian was silent.

“Ice sea scrolls, number AD0099, I have helped you find the information you need.” Manstein handed Guderian a copper roll sealed in a cylindrical glass bottle.

“The remnants with initials AD?” Guderian was frightened, “This is a top-secret document!”

“Only the oldest documents contain the highest level of secrecy.” Manstein said, “’SS – The Emperor’ is valid for all descendants who are subject to the dragon emperor, but there is one group of descendants who are not subject to the dragon emperor.”

“The ‘white king’ mentioned in Dragon Chronicle · Secret.” Whispered Guderian. “This was the subject of our mutual research.”

“Yes, we happen to be the two people in this college who know the history of the white king best. The ‘Speaking Spirit – Oracle’ of the white king is the only one known to have restrained ‘The Emperor’, and it used Oracle on all its descendants after betraying the black king.”

“You mean, Lu Mingfei has… White King’s lineage?”

Manstein nodded slightly. “I can’t think of any other explanation.”

Guderian kept silent for a long time, “The lineage of White King is only a legend. According to the records of the Frozen Copper Table, Black King Nidhogg destroyed the white king with great power. He killed it, ate it in the flesh and turned its bones into ice. He then melted the ice into the volcano, destroyed the white king’s body and soul completely. Thus, the white king does not exist, Speaking Spirit Oracle will also lose power.”

Scene 2: Golden Pupils (5)

“I am sorry to disturb you, Angers. However, there’re some unsolvable issues. In this year’s “freedom day”, students are suspected of violating the special school rules. Members of Lionheart and Student Union used Frigg bullets and made the whole campus as a battlefield, many people were injured… They also damaged a lot of buildings. It’s a very bad situation!” Professor Manstein exclaimed seriously, “And our proud students, especially Chu Zihang, President of Lionheart Association, and Caesar Gattuso, President of Student Union, have no respect for the Discipline Committee.”

“Oh, Caesar has always been like that, and Manstein you ought to get used to it.” Said the principal blandly.

Professor Manstein hesitated for a moment. “We still need to consider the cost… The preliminary calculation of the maintenance cost is about 240,000 dollars… And that doesn’t include the lawn. They stepped your favourite Bermuda lawn looks like plowed farmland!”

“Well, Caesar, as the richest student in the college, would you mind spending the money to resurface my beloved Bermuda lawn?” The principal asked.

“As you wish.” Caesar shrugged. The guy was even fluent enough to use idioms in Chinese.

“Well, I was only joking, get the money out of the trustees’ fund. After all, the students worked so hard to win the ‘freedom day’ from us on the anniversary.” The principal laughed brightly, “Don’t forget your study life. My dear students, I really hope to have a happy ‘freedom day’ with you.”

The students looked at each other, clapped and cheered, threw the armbands off their arms into the air, twisted their arms around each other’s shoulders, and made funny faces at Professor Manstein.

Lu Mingfei also clapped his hands and nodded happily to show that “Hey, I’m the same as you, and I’m also very happy for you to tease that bald old guy”. As a newcomer, he quickly recognized his position, to stay in this college, he cannot be seen by students as the kind of “teacher’s puppy”. Being students’ public enemies will be dead for sure.

“There’s one more person I want to ask.” The principal shouted on the phone.

Everyone froze, and the campus became quiet.

“Isn’t the ‘S’ freshman Lu Mingfei there? Have you finished your course-chosen? Did you choose my Introduction to the Dragon Lineage?” The principal’s voice echoed around.

The students’ eyes filled with wonder, and everyone began to whisper.

“Maybe… I remember… I took it.” Lu Mingfei had to say that. Professor Guderian took the phone from Professor Manstein’s hand and handed it to him.

“I’m very glad to hear your voice. You took Caesar and Chu Zihang down on the first day of entering the school. I’m looking forward to meeting you in class! You must do better work than the ‘S’ before!” The principal hung up.

Lu Mingfei scratched his head, did not understand how to do “better work”. How can he compare with the senior who suicided because of philosophical issues? Swallow a canon? Suddenly he felt the temperature drop around him. He looked around. All eyes around him were focused on him, cold and hostile.

The sun slanted in through the porthole, and the man in the shadow hung up the phone, leaning back in his chair and breathing silently. Looking out of the porthole was a river, and the ship was passing between two hills.

“Caesar and Chu Zihang made troubles in school again?” The middle-aged man across the table asked, “The maintenance cost of ‘freedom day’ is higher than last year, maybe it should be controlled. The gifted students like the wild lifestyle, but they should be strictly disciplined soldiers.”

“I gave them space on purpose. Ten years ago, Cassel College was a secret military fortress. But Maans, do you remember that setback ten years ago?”

The middle-aged man nodded and took a sip of black tea from the table. “No one will forget.”

“The well-trained army was gone. All of them. I had to rethink my approach to education, and maybe in the war with the dragons, what we need is not the army, but talent.” The principal switched to English. “Somebody.”

“Somebody?”

“The One! A unique genius, a leader, a dragon slayer that even dragon kings will get afraid, one is enough! Like my friend Maynic Cassel!” The principal said in low voice, “The cultivation of genius requires an environment of freedom.”

“Perhaps. Caesar and Chu Zihang are an unprecedented genius, but Lu Mingfei… You ranked him ‘S’.” The middle-aged man frowned, “I put CC1000 to pick up him lately to extend his observation period deliberately, but… “

“He’s so ordinary, isn’t he?” The principal smiled.

“I have no idea what he can do.”

“Don’t be too surprised to hear it. I don’t know enough about what Lu Mingfei can do. But his ‘S’ is justified and I can’t tell you yet.” The principal said, “He could be the genius we were hoping for, or he could just be a piece of garbage.”

“Let a pile of rubbish be caught between Caesar and Chu Zihang, it will burst.”

The principal scratched his gray hair. “It’s too early to say he’s a trash.” He stood up and looked out of the porthole. It was the middle of a flood. On the banks of the river, the dark green grass was covered with small white flowers.

“We are passing over ‘Kui Men’. 1) Before the Three Gorges Dam, the mountains on both sides were like pillars of a gate.” The principal said softly, “Ancient Chinese people said ‘Kui Dragon’, referring to a one-legged ancient dragon. Does “Kui Men” mean that they once saw a dragon swimming in the river here? When does “Kui Men” plan to start?”

“In a week.” The middle-aged man said, “Ye Sheng and Aki are ready. They are the best men I have under my command, with modified Vessel Moniaher, I’m confident enough.”

“If it’s really like what we guess before, don’t wake him. King of Bronze and Fire, noble first generation. No one can determine his power.” The principal said, “Come back safe and sound.”

In the dead of night, Lu Mingfei sat cross-legged on the bunk bed, staring out of the window in a daze.

He was placed in student dorm 1303, a double room with Fingel. When Lu Mingfei walked into the dormitory with his head hunched, Fingel was sleeping soundly on the upper bunk, seems that guns can’t influence him at all.

“Is everything ok?” Fingel poked his head from the top bunk.

“You have no idea what happened today.” Lu Mingfei sighed.

“I do, your heroic deeds had spread throughout the campus. You are on the campus news network today, and the title is quite sensational.” Fingel held the computer down for Lu Mingfei.

“To whom does the crown of the freedom day belong? And who blew up Caesar and then blew up Chu Zihang?”

Below are large photos of Lu Mingfei, with his student number, dorm number, age, native place and all the information. The last line marked courteously: “SINGLE!”

“Like a lonely hearts announcement…” Said Lu Mingfei.

“It’s a WANTED!” Fingel said, “You don’t seem to know what you’re doing.”

“I didn’t do anything, I was just a little excited. The bullets were flying everywhere, you didn’t want to defend yourself if it’s you?” Lu Mingfei pleaded.

“Self-defense is ok, but can you call it self-defense when two shots are fired at Caesar and Chu Zihang who were holding only cold weapons? And you have to know that you are the winner of freedom day this year. You have just completed the admission procedures, so you are the school’s proper students. You are eligible to participate in the freedom day as a third party to participate in the battlefield. As the last survivor, you won!”

“Are there bonus credits?”

“It’s a lot more than that. First, you get a year’s use of ‘NORTON HALL’! Secondly, direct access to next year’s ‘College Star’ final! In the end,” Fingel said, “the first girl you pursued in the college couldn’t turn you down and had to have a relationship with you for at least three months.”

“I have a very bad feeling…” Lu Mingfei was alarmed.

“Do you now know why you are the public enemy of all the men in the college?” Fingel said, “Move over the mouse to your photo.”

Then where mouse placed suddenly jumped out a blood-red fork with lines clearly, “Did you see this guy! This asshole! Who’s going to kill him?”

Lu Mingfei petrified completely.

“Bang Bang”, it’s someone knocking on the door, Lu Mingfei jumped like a rabbit.

“Calm down, they will not look for revenge in the dorm. They at least have to give me a little bit of face.” Fingel jumped down to open the door.

Professor Guderian, beaming, walked in and the first thing he did was slap Lu Mingfei vigorously on the shoulder. “Boy, I’m proud of you! In one day, your name has spread all over the campus!”

“If you go blow up the Pentagon and your name will also spread all over America in a day… “

“Why you come here so late?” Fingel asked.

Professor Guderian handed an envelope to Lu Mingfei. “I am sending you the student id card. With this, you can enjoy the ‘S’ level privilege in the whole school. Also, tomorrow is the day of the 3E exam, are you ready?

“3E?” Lu Mingfei was dumbstruck, “What is the 3E exam?”

“Quizzes, which may be a trouble for others. It’s just a breeze for S-level.”

“What? Is it a standardized test? Only multiple choice and true or false?”

“Just the dragon’s language.” Professor Guderian said easily.

Lu Mingfei could not catch up with him. “You said a foreign language can be exempted! What language? Do dragons write? How the hell could there be such a thing?”

“Dragon’s language is not a foreign language… It’s one of your native languages.” Professor Guderian said, “Don’t worry, there’s no need to learn it. You are an ‘S’ level with amazing purity of the dragon lineage. Once you see the language, you can understand it naturally.”

Professor Guderian put his hands on Lu Mingfei’s shoulders and looked him straight in the eyes. “Be focus, Mingfei, and hear my words!”

Professor Guderian’s mouth burst into a string of retroflex sounds Lu Mingfei had never heard before. It was an unimaginable way of pronouncing it. A voice that was thick, hoarse and regal, like the ringing of a church bell.

Lu Mingfei was stunned and stared at the ceiling with a sad look on his face.

“Praise the awakening of my king, for destruction is new life.” Professor Guderian explained, “Mingfei, do you feel the voice of the ancient dragon emperor? I can tell that from your facial expression, you understood!”

He turned to Fingel. “Look, this is the level of ‘S’. When you were an ‘A’ student, you didn’t have the same sensitivity to the dragon’s language.”

“Now,” said Fingel, shaking his hand in front of Lu Mingfei’s glassy eyes. “Is there any dragon writing emerging in your mind? It seems like he’s having the ‘Spiritual vision’.”

“You must be mistaken… I really try to understand, but still do not understand!” Lu Mingfei cried, “Are you sure you’re getting the right person? I’m not the only one who’s name Lu Mingfei in China.”

“You…… Don’t you understand?” Professor Guderian was shocked. “Then why are you looking so sad?”

“I don’t understand, because don’t understand means I can’t pass the exam.”

“What?…… Won’t you? You don’t have an illusion at all? There is no such thing as… The feeling of being called by a great creature?” Professor Guderian was horrified.

“I thought you were singing…” Said Lu Mingfei cautiously.

Professor Guderian, after freaking out for a moment, suddenly regained the scholar’s composure. He grabbed Lu Mingfei’s shoulder and said firmly, “The first case! This is the first case! Interesting! Very interesting!”

“What first?” Fingel asked.

“The first dragon descendant who did not answer the call of the dragon emperor!” Professor Guderian looked at Lu Mingfei, as an appreciation of a precious specimen, “You are a mutation!”

“And you are a neuropath.” Said Lu Mingfei.

“Listen to me, the reverence for the dragon is rooted in the blood of the dragon race. Any dragon generations will have a reaction to this “Speaking Spirit – The Emperor”. But you have a genetic mutation, so you’re not sensitive to it. You are unique!” The old guy was thrilled. “Is that why you were ranked as an ‘S’?”

“Wait! Another possibility is that I’m just a normal person, right?” Lu Mingfei said, “Is that a much more plausible explanation?”

“Impossible! The principal can’t go wrong with the pedigree rating.” Professor Guderian yelled. “You must be unusual!” But he changed to a depressed face, “But what about tomorrow’s 3E exam? Who but I can believe that you are a mutation?”

“I do!” Fingel raised his hand. “He’s such a mutant from his appearance!”

“It’s really hard to do… It can affect my professor assess.” Professor Guderian scratched his head.

“Professor assess? What’s will that influence?” Lu Mingfei was puzzled.

“Well, I haven’t judge on the tenured professor here,” the old guy blushed, “I’ve been in school for more than ten years, but I’m still an assistant professor…… The principal took care of me and assigned you to me, said you are an unprecedented ‘S’ level students with unparalleled potential. The process of developing you into an outstanding student is so easy like the New York Yankees win the championship next year. Then I can become a tenured professor.”

“What a mess. Didn’t you say you were a professor at Harvard?”

“Yes, but a tenured professor at Harvard has to succeed in producing a student to transfer to a tenured professor at Cassel.”

“That is to say… I am such an ‘S’ student, but my tutor is an assistant professor without any teaching experience?”

“You can’t say that. I transferred to Cassel College and had a student named Fingel before…” The old guy patted the man standing there with “none of my business” written all over his face.

“Oh… Is that why I was put in the same dorm as this weird Fingel?” Lu Mingfei suddenly understood.

“I understand you, you feel hopeless… But let’s face it,” Fingel sighed. “You are indeed teaching by the worst professor, having a grade 8 senior brother, killing by the whole campus’ male students, and there’s another sad news I have to tell you.”

“What? Come on!” Lu Mingfei said, “Can it get worse? I don’t believe it!”

“You kept talking about Nuo Nuo or Chen Motong,” Fingel said, drawing close to Lu Mingfei’s ear. “She’s Caesar’s girlfriend!”

“I believe now…” Said Lu Mingfei. He felt a slight twitch in the bottom of his heart, and he felt suddenly empty.

  1. Kui Men: A door called “Kui”, same as the “Kui Dragon”, it’s just a kind of dragon called “Kui” in ancient China.

Scene 2: Golden Pupils (4)

Hunting knife “Dictator” is fierce and tough in Caesar’s hand, while Chu Zihang’s “Murasame” is like a ghost in the air, flashing and making deadly splits; every time “Dictator” cut it off, Chu Zihang will retreat immediately and turn into almost invisible light once again at high speed. The life-and-death fighting between the two sides is as graceful as a dance performance, whose speed is so fast that Lu Mingfei can’t see them clearly. A vague black figure, a vague crimson figure; the shadow of Dictator, the strong sunlight reflected by Murasame are mixed together and cannot be separated.

The vibration of Chu Zihang’s blade became more and more intense in the air. It was mixed with Caesar’s roaring and formed a dense killing atmosphere.

“Dictator? Murasame? What the hell?” Lu Mingfei murmured.

“Dictator” means “the leader” in ancient Rome, while “Murasame” is supposed to be a blade that doesn’t exist in the world, but frequently appears in Japanese games. In those games or cartoons, after “Muramasa” kill one thousand people, it will be changed to the evil blade “Murasame”, which will naturally produce beaded rain to wash away the blood. But Lu Mingfei had searched it, knowing this blade is just made up. It’s written the script of Legend of the Eight Samurai. Though, someone in this college really pulled out this blade.

Could it be any more absurd? Caesar, can you grab the Frostmourne out? Lu Mingfei laid himself there, thinking.

The sound of tiny footsteps came from behind the narrow road. Lu Mingfei stupefied and listened carefully.

The footsteps were creeping in. Lu Mingfei was startled and suddenly realized that the other side might have a gun. Before he could jump up and say that I surrender! I’m just an innocent passer-by! The man’s foot was on his back, and she leaped lightly out of the narrow way. She stepped on Lu Mingfei’s lungs and squeezed an “ouch”. Startled, the man pulled out her Colt pistol from the waist and squatted down, turned cross-legged to point at her back.

The two men looked at each other. Lu Mingfei blinked. He was pleasantly surprised by the other’s beautiful flying eyes, her long dark red hair in a ponytail, and the wobbly four-leaf clover studs on her ears.

“Come, little rabbit, give me a hug!” A voice rose in his head. It was these eyes that were looking at him as she said this, they are frighteningly beautiful.

“Nuo Nuo, it’s me!” Lu Mingfei was happy because except those two psychopaths playing blades, the last living one here is Nuo Nuo.

Nuo Nuo was dressed in a crimson combat uniform. Lu Mingfei stunned. He suddenly understood Nuo Nuo is in this killing game, and she’s the last girl beside Caesar in the red team. Caesar set an ambush when he takes on the challenge, the last man will attack the home of the black team, and Nuo Nuo is his “back up plan”. Lu Mingfei realized that he was in fact completely unfamiliar with Nuo Nuo, their time together is only a short few hours; but on the way across the ocean, what quieted his heart down is this unfamiliar girl.

Why trust her? Just no one else to trust, right?

And she’s holding a gun, pointing at you right now.

Lu Mingfei raised his hands carefully. “Don’t shoot… I surrender… I’m just a passer-by.”

Nuo Nuo still held the gun flatly and did not even move her eyebrows.

“Senior sister… I… I…” Said Lu Mingfei.

Nuo Nuo revealed a faint smile. But then she suddenly roared, “Get down!”

Without a moment’s hesitation, she pulled the trigger.

The bullet whistled over his head, narrowly missing his head. At the moment she roared, Lu Mingfei lied down directly.

That damned, weird sense of trust. Even she points the gun to him, he still did it without thinking.

The blood spread across Nuo Nuo’s chest, turning her crimson uniform to black. A large-calibre sniper bullet hit her directly in the chest and she was carried almost to ground, but with her last bit of strength she held on.

She looked down at the wound on her chest and nodded to Lu Mingfei. Her voice was hoarse. “Indeed tact, but still a bit slow…”

Lu Mingfei turned his head and saw a girl dressed in black lying with a sniper rifle on the ground, the black muzzle was still smoking. Lu Mingfei knew the gun, the American Barrett M82A1 sniper rifle – “the king of sniper”, 0.5-inch diameter. Hit at this distance is absolutely incurable, and the bullet can stain the bowels of a person.

The girl was the last member of the black team. She’s the sniper, who jumped out of the side window into the narrow lane with her gun. Originally Nuo Nuo can take her down by one shot, but Lu Mingfei stopped her trajectory. So, the two sides did a cowboy showdown, but Nuo Nuo shot a few seconds slower, Lu Mingfei… is still too slow.

Lu Mingfei couldn’t believe his eyes, but the blood dripping from Nuo Nuo’s chest reminded him that all these are true. Her eyes strayed and showed signs of dying.

Lu Mingfei grabbed his head. His head felt pain deeply. Strangely, it’s like in a very deep place, something will come out. At the moment, the bright golden pupils on the screen of darkness are opening with the voice of a huge bell. “Would you like to exchange?”

Exchange? Exchange for what?

There is a kind of impulse to make him want to say yes, it seems that the promise will make the world totally different; at the moment of exchange, something will change.

The female sniper jumped up, abandoned her sniper rifle and drew her sabre from her back. Lu Mingfei did not react, the girl stepped on his back and landed lightly on the side of Nuo Nuo. She grabbed her long hair and stabbed the sabre into her throat. Blood splashed on Nuo Nuo’s face. A few drops of blood splattered on Lu Mingfei.

“We won! Caesar! You failed!” The girl raised her bloody dagger.

Indeed, they won. Neither Caesar nor Chu Zihang could leave the battlefield at the moment, she could easily hum a song and go to the home of the crimson team to win the game of killing. If this is a game of chess, both sides have reached the end of the game, the outcome has been unable to reverse.

But a red pawn appeared on the chessboard, on the “Snarled” point.

The deafening noise of the shots silenced the girl’s voice, and the bullets behind her, with great momentum, pushed her forward. She could not believe it, struggling to turn back. She saw Lu Mingfei holding PPK left by Yasushi Tomiyama, which has been transformed into a gun like a canon, climbed up quietly from the ground.

This pawn began to burn!

Caesar and Chu Zihang drew back and looked at the narrow exit filled with smoke. A tottering figure appeared from the smoke, carrying the heavy “the king of sniper”. The nearly 1.5-meter sniper rifle in his hand looked as awkward as it could be, not the way a trained person holding a gun.

Caesar frowned. “Who is that? Irrelevant out!”

A large calibre bullet hit him in the front, and he staggered back two steps, fell on his back.

A shell spinning out from the chamber of “the king of sniper”, landing. Lu Mingfei blew a breath on the chamber. It’s a dull face without expression.

Chu Zihang slowly turned, the light of Murasame was reflected in his golden pupils. He threw away the blade and held up his hands. “Who are you?”

Chu Zihang, it’s indeed the legend of his high school. Kind of people like Lu Mingfei can only watch him from far away.

When he’s still in senior high school, Chu Zihang was the president of the student union, and he would patrol each class during morning exercise. Even it’s raining Lu Mingfei’s class had to present, looking up to spotless Chu Zihang. He will walk slowly from the top floor of the building, overlooking them. They acted like toy soldiers conformably.

It’s only that his pupils were not golden.

“Lu… Mingfei?” Miraculously, Chu Zihang shouted out the name of Lu Mingfei.

If in the past Lu Mingfei will probably be moved to do not know what to say, legendary senior Chu Zihang remembered his name, probably also concerned about him? Although he is not one of those girl fans of Chu Zihang girl, this is also a privilege.

So he said nothing and looked coldly at Chu Zihang.

“The game is over, I can concede!” Chu Zihang felt Lu Mingfei’s emotion, such as fierce wind and knife cutting his face. He decided to concede.

The black muzzle lifted again. Lu Mingfei’s bones moved with mechanical precision. He pulled the spring and let the bullet to slide into the magazine. Then his fingers buckled the trigger, felt the mechanical part of the gun as one part of his body. The muzzle is in place, bones locked one by one in the appropriate position, and Chu Zihang’s figure appeared in the sight bead.

“Against…” Lu Mingfei spat out the word coldly.

The second word was swallowed up by the roar of the gun.

Lu Mingfei pulled the trigger. The bullet whistled away from the sniper rifle and pierced Chu Zihang’s chest with splashing blood.

The campus suddenly quieted down. The sun shined on the smoke to make a beautiful golden colour as if he’s standing in the morning fog. For a long time, Lu Mingfei leaned his sniper rifle against the wall and sat slowly on the steps, his hands clasped on the forehead.

The sonorous march resounded through the campus. The broadcasting system, which had been mute for a long time, seemed to be waking up from a nap.

Lu Mingfei was stunned as if awakened from a dream. He looked around at the body, raised his hands high, but did not know to whom he should surrender.

An unknown building opened its doors, and doctors and nurses swarmed out, carrying suitcases with insignia. Lu Mingfei gawked at the doctors taking out the syringe for the body injection, dared not say a word. A little old man with thin round gold-rimmed glasses and shiny bald head came towards Lu Mingfei with a handkerchief over his nose, frowning and sighing. As he passed the bullet-scarred wall, his sigh became more touching. It seemed that he did not care how many people had died, but that he was sorry for the loss.

He walked up to Lu Mingfei, looked him up and down. “You are the new student, right?”

Lu Mingfei nodded.

“I’m the head of the Disciplinary Committee! Professor Manstein!” The little old man looked scornful. “Get away and rest! Students now! Entering school without putting schoolwork at the top of the priority list, but playing such a boring game! Is it fun? Is it fun?” He yelled and got angry once again, pointed at those cratered granites of buildings. “These are all money! All MONEY!”

Lu Mingfei moved his position to sit and found someone tapping his shoulder from behind. “Never mind, Manstein is my good friend. He’s just a bit greedy. I’ll ask him to take care of your courses later.”

Lu Mingfei nodded his head. “But this is…”

He turned away, stunned. It wasn’t anyone but Professor Guderian who was shot in the shoulder. Now the old man’s chest was still a pool of blood, but he’s bright.

“Ghost!” This is Lu Mingfei’s first reaction.

“Alive! I am alive!” Professor Guderian quickly waved his hand. “Touch me, it’s hot!”

“OK…… So you came back from hell successfully?” Lu Ming was shivering.

“I am not dead, don’t be frightened by the small game of the student, it’s just a fake drill. Today is the ‘freedom day’ of the college, where students can do what they want without being penalized by school rules.” Professor Guderian sat down beside Lu Mingfei.

“But you’re covered in blood!” Said Lu Mingfei loudly.

“Oh, it’s a little alchemy equipment, ‘Frigg bullets’, that they use as toys.” Professor Guderian took a dark red bullet from his pocket and handed it to Lu Mingfei.

“Frigg is the wife of Odin, the goddess of Norse mythology. In order to protect her son, Baldr, the god of light, she made all the creatures in the world swear not to hurt the god of light, so nothing can hurt Baldr. If the warhead hits its target, it will quickly disintegrate and vaporize, leaving no injuries but bloody marks. Mixed with a tiny amount of anesthetic, it can cause an immediate coma. It used to be used as a narcotic bullet, but it was also a ‘freedom day’ reserved weapon for students. See me demonstrate.” Professor Guderian thrust the bullet into the back of his hand, and the hard bullet burst open under the impact, turning into a cloud of blood-red dust like a gunshot.

“This…… So advanced!” Lu Mingfei exclaimed.

Guderian’s face twitched and he fell headlong at Lu Mingfei’s feet.

“Is this…… Did the resurrection fail?” Lu Mingfei’s face twitched too.

“The numbness in Frigga’s bullet is equal to another shot, mindless fellow.” Professor Manstein frowned. “Nurse! Give him another needle!”

The field of corpses is now a sports arena, with doctors and nurses giving injections to people who have been shot, massaging the backs and shoulders of “dead” people who have broken their joints and recording their student numbers. Lu Mingfei found that after removing their masks from their heads, the dead men were all around nineteen. The first thing after these people wake up is to whisper, want to know the victory or defeat blankly. Two team leader Caesar and Chu Zihang lied in the parking lot, looks intimate with arms and thighs together. There’re huge blood spots on their chests, next to them are Murasame and Dictator.

Looks like someone shot them when they were fighting.

“Who did it?” Someone shouted at the top of his voice.

Lu Mingfei sat on the steps with a straight face and an “I am an innocent passer-by” expression.

“Shut up! Still want to make trouble? This year has gone too far!” Professor Manstein shouted angrily. “You have violated the special school rule of ‘freedom day.’ I will report to the headmaster and terminate this activity!”

“The three special rules are: Don’t use the facilities in the ‘ice cellar’, don’t cause casualties, and don’t show strangers around, right?” Someone asked.

“Injuries are when they accidentally fell, and everybody falls, right?” Said another.

The two students speaking were Caesar and Chu Zihang. The two hostile enemies just woke up, calm as two captains like they just played a basketball game. Each of them leaning on the side of the narrow road, with almost the same movement of hands clasped in the chest. Caesar looks lazy, Chu Zihang showed a face without expression.

“Great! Caesar, Chu Zihang, how dare you! Wait for me to report to the principal!” Shaking with anger, Professor Manstein reached into his arms and dialled his mobile phone. Everyone was quiet, as if the principle of the college had a special place in the minds of students, all of them stared on Professor Manstein’s phone.

Professor Manstein, in a position of authority, pressed the hands-free button.

“Hello, Manstein.” The deep, gentle voice sounds like a typical European gentleman, but he spoke standard Chinese.

Scene 2: Golden Pupils (3)

“Hybrid? Both my parents are human, have you seen too many Chinese traditional stories? Thinking we Chinese are all children of the dragons?” Lu Mingfei argued.

“No, they are all human, but they are both dragon hybrids, so your blood contains a very high percentage of the dragon lineage.” Professor Guderian and Yasushi Tomiyama looked at each other. “Anyway, you will know sooner or later that most people in this college are hybrids of dragons. Do you know how we determine the level? Level means the percentage of lineage! You are an ‘S’ because of your high purity of dragon blood!”

Lu Mingfei was foolish. At the moment Professor Guderian became an old dragon in his eye suddenly, who can spit deadly flame on his face at any time.

What is this place? A college of dragon hybrids? What’s the difference between this and the dragon’s nest? And a… A little rabbit in the dragon nest! High purity of dragon blood? Why has he suddenly considered a reptile while he should be a good mammal growing under the red flag? 1)

“But you don’t have more than 50 percent. Students more than 50 percent will won’t be accepted. Although they will be much stronger than mortal, their blood will change them to followers of dragon gradually.” Said Professor Guderian.

“You and dragons… are enemies?”

“The whole human race are enemies of dragons, not us,” Professor Guderian said with twinkling eyes. “this will be explained in detail in your ‘Dragon Lineage’ class. Now that you know about dragons, want to know more? Great! Each course will contain the knowledge of dragons. So why don’t we make the course table right now?”

“I don’t want to know more! Can I quit?” Lu Mingfei raised his hand.

Professor Guderian was obviously disappointed. “Well… Yes, but the agreement you just signed includes a memory purge. If you drop out, the memory has to be erased. You have peeped into the real world, don’t you think it’s a pity to quit?”

“Pity for what?” Said Lu Mingfei.

“Who doesn’t want to know the real world? The world is so vast that you can hardly imagine it. Compared with it, the world you knew before is as small as a grain of rice on a moor.” Yasushi Tomiyama said.

Lu Mingfei dazed. “No, I don’t. I never mind being a fat white rice bug.”

“It’s not just amnesia,” Professor Guderian said, patting Lu on the shoulder. “Think, your parents are both dragon hybrids, your aunt’s family doesn’t like you. You have nothing to do back to China, and you still need to attend the final exam next year… Can you imagine your life?”

The old guy hit the weakness of Lu Mingfei accurately. Compared with the great real world, for him, the pressure of re-reading and the big exam is real and scary.

He said with a depressed tone, “Well, I’ll try it in a couple of days… “

“Great!” Professor Guderian’s eyes sparkled with excitement. “I was prepared for your plan! In the first semester, I suggest that you choose “Introduction to Dragon Family Pedigree”, “Magic Mechanical Design Level 1” and “Alchemy Chemistry Level 1” as your professional courses. Take “Ancient Norse” as your foreign language course and “Tai Ji” as your physical course. In this way, you will get 13 credits and no one can compare with you among freshmen. I want you to be the exact second ‘S’ student in forty years at Cassel!”

“Those many courses? Why do I have parents who don’t understand their son? Do they think they born a genius?” Lu Mingfei felt completely weak. “Well, don’t beat around either. What happens if I fail?”

“It’s just a retake. Cassel doesn’t quit students, as long as they don’t break the rules seriously.” Professor Guderian had a soothing voice. “Do you remember Fingel? He was in fourth grade for four years… Nobody told him to quit school.”

That’s not comfort. That’s a threat. Fingel, once A high-spirited “A” student, was tortured into a wretched tramp, while the “S” senior killed himself, maybe the logic here is high-level students will die quicker! Lu Mingfei thought.

“Well, I agree, I’ll sign it. One last question, why do you all speak Chinese?” Said Lu Mingfei.

“Very good question,” said Professor Guderian, nodding his head, “according to the conclusion of the Research Department, several high-level dragons’ resting place is in China, and they are about to wake up. Cassel College has made Chinese a required course since ten years ago because each of you will be responsible for killing them!”

“No wonder jobs are assigned after graduation… No one will accept your recruitment!” Said Lu Mingfei.

“But we are well paid! We even paid for your medical insurance!” Said Professor Guderian.

“Come on! You’re dragon slayers. How do you live without health insurance? This dangerous job? How much is the maximum paid? Fifty million dollars?”

“It’s free to fly your dead body back to China… “

“What?” Lu Mingfei stared and imagined a body covered with a white sheet being carried off the plane with a label on its head: “Lu Mingfei”.

Lu Mingfei was supported by Professor Guderian and Yasushi Tomiyama and stepped out of the office. On his left and right sides, people were patting on his shoulder forcefully, but his head was drooping like a limp chicken. A group of repairmen in costume carried toolboxes to past them, looks like they are going to repair the window with a large hole shot by the PPK.

Outside the medieval building are green lawns, crimson cobblestones and castle-like buildings, with pigeons rising and falling from the church in the distance. Standing in the sun, Lu Mingfei somehow recovered some vitality, at least it seems that he is still alive in the world.

“My parents…” Asked Lu Mingfei.

He felt he had to ask, what role does his parents played in this event, and what kind of parents will push their only child into the fire? Is he an adopted kid? He never thought about it years before.

The shrill sirens went across the campus suddenly like rushing ghosts.  Lu Mingfei frozen. Professor Guderian and Yasushi Tomiyama’s serious face clearly showed the situation is bad.

“Ah? Was it an air raid?” Lu Ming looked left and right. “Are dragons attacking? Will dragons use airstrikes? Ah yes, they can fly!”

He then realized that he had accepted the Cassel College’s concept of “there are indeed dragons in the world”, and found a strange thing at the same time. The huge campus was empty, only him, Professor Guderian and Yasushi Tomiyama stood by the lawn. It doesn’t make sense even though the summer vacation isn’t finished.

“God I forget what day is today… Find cover! Damn they’re about to start!” Yasushi Tomiyama yelled, sweating.

“Go back to the office and hide!” Professor Guderian looked grave.

It was late. On the stairs of the small building behind them, a crowd of M4A1 gunmen in black uniforms appeared. The maintenance workers emerged from the office as if to stop them, but in a second, the woodworkers strong like Navy Seals were shot as they rushed out of the office.

Lu Mingfei thought that his medical insurance to send his body back to China would be available immediately.

Before the men pointed their guns at him, Yasushi Tomiyama dragged him and Professor Guderian to a narrow corridor. Ignoring all three targets, the black-clad intruders sped past through the narrow passageway as crimson men rushed out of the church. The extreme quiet campus suddenly became a battlefield. People rushed out of every building. They were divided by cloth’s colour, and each of them shot the opposite team fiercely. With the deafening sound of gunfire, Lu Mingfei almost thought he was in the North Africa battlefield in WW2.

He was completely speechless, staring at Professor Guderian.

“What does the president of the School Union want to do? What is his name again? He doesn’t want to lose credit, right!?!” Professor Guderian covered his ears and growled at Yasushi Tomiyama.

“Did he care? His GPA is not high!” Yasushi Tomiyama said, squatting nimbly. The whistling of the bullet passed over his head. Lu Mingfei thought it was a real bullet, and Yasushi Tomiyama would fall like the maintenance workers if he hesitated for another second. The rebellion of the Student Union? Is the Student Union here committed to fighting?

“His name is Caesar Gattuso!” Yasushi Tomiyama stood up and exclaimed angrily, “That playboy driven Buggati Veyron!”

He pulled the canon version of the PPK out of his arms and replaced it with another magazine clip like a dare-to-die soldier on the battlefield.

“I shall remember him! If he takes my class, I’ll teach him a lesson!” Shouted Professor Guderian.

As he said that, his life was over, and the bullet entered his body with tremendous kinetic energy, leaving a smoking hole in his scruffy suit and spilling blood. Professor Guderian took a hard look at the bullet hole in his body and pulled Lu Mingfei, “Your course table… Remember to fill it out!”

Professor Guderian fell down. Yasushi Tomiyama, who was shot in the back as he tried to jump to the rescue, seems pushed from behind. He rushed forward a few steps and never got up again.

“This…… Surely it is not joking?” Lu Mingfei said in his heart. In front of him, someone was really dead.

With his back against the wall, he felt myriad trajectories of bullets crisscrossing the outside. Those killing bullets glanced past him. The campus is now a slaughterhouse, and he’s still a freshman who hasn’t been assigned a dormitory yet. He doesn’t even know which side is the dragon and which side is the human. Lu Mingfei shuddered, feeling that his head was full of paste now. If he had been shot by a gun, it must not be his brains that come out.

“Positioning! Positioning! The other side still has 43 people left!”

“They have 27 men left! One sniper has failed to locate! He had already killed thirteen of us! Get rid of him!”

Both sides roared into the walkie-talkie and kept shooting. But the strange thing is that no one tried to rush into the narrow road where Lu Mingfei stood with only stray bullets constantly. Lu Mingfei stood rigidly beside the corpses of Professor Guderian and Yasushi Tomiyama, imagining himself as a wooden stick standing aloof from the world.

The carnage outside continued for an indefinite period, with smoke billowing from the campus and bodies strewn across the lawns and hallways. Both sides have used a variety of weapons, including grenades launchers and shoulder-fired rockets. Lu Mingfei has read many weapons magazines and knows these expensive guys. Flying bullets shattered a row of glass not far from him, shattering Lu’s illusion that it was just a drill.

Those weapons are all real!

His heart was racing at 180 beats a minute, and he was sweating with something called adrenaline. He may die every minute, but he’s fine… all the time… He was so tired that he squatted down on the ground and looked out with his chin under arms. The group of people dressed in black uniforms and the other red uniform group are the antithesis of each other obviously, they are trying to storm toward the headquarters of their opponent. The black team’s headquarter is just that building, while the red team’s headquarters is the church across the lawn. In the middle of the parking lot is the fire focus, because both sides have to go through the parking lot. There is no enough hidden object, and the whole area is completely exposed to the barrage, over 40 people had died there.

“That will only make sense if it’s a Zerg, they’re fast and mindless; but as humans shouldn’t you have covered the ground with tanks first? Or you could send a ghost to drop the nuclear bomb.” Lu Mingfei thought randomly.

Seemed the commander had understood the intention of StarCraft player Lu Mingfei. A red guy carrying a suitcase tried to rush through the parking lot. After dodged a few pieces of the barrage, a sniper rifle bullet knocked him to the ground from high up. Lu Mingfei saw it’s clearly a nuclear yellow mark on the suitcase.

Lu Mingfei’s face twitched. “I’m just kidding… Seriously? Not bad… I don’t think it would hurt to be killed by a nuclear bomb this close.”

This’s no way for him to understand this crazy battlefield.

The guns were becoming thin and the smoke was dispersing a little. A powerful voice came from all directions through some speakers, saying, “Caesar, how many men are still alive? Do you still want to continue?”

“Chu Zihang, nice job,” the answer of another side came out from the same speakers with a cold smile, “There’s only a girl left on my side. Wanna to use a girl to charge?”

“Chu Zihang?” Lu Mingfei stunned for a second, thinking this name is somehow familiar.

“I have only one girl left, either. But unfortunately, she is the sniper who makes your headache. If she locks up the parking lot, you can’t get in, but she can’t charge.”

“It’s not going to be a dead-end this year, is it? Isn’t that a pity?”

“Indeed, I still want to win your Bugatti Veyron.”

“Now I only have a hunting knife left. What about you?”

“Of course it’s the Murasame. It’s my command sword.”

“See you in the parking lot.”

“Great.”

The sound of the electric current from loudspeakers stopped abruptly, both sides cut off communication. The campus was as quiet as a dead city, filled with smoke like the morning fog.  Lu Mingfei hid in the narrow road to look around, he felt that something bad is about to happen. He considered for a while and lying between the corpse of Yasushi Tomiyama and Professor Guardian. He looked at the old man’s face and felt a little sad that he had been kind to himself and had been killed for no reason.

“It’s all your fault, working in this strange college.” With a sigh, he lifted Professor Guderian’s arm over his back, making it appear that Professor Guderian was trying to cover him when they were shot down together.

The door of the church and the building opened at the same time, and the heavy combat boots took their first step almost at the same time.

The men in crimson uniforms carried a hunting knife about half a meter long with gold stripes; the man in black uniform carried a slender Japanese blade, its body reflecting sunlight and dazzling. Two people walked toward the parking lot, while tardy footsteps made the atmosphere tighter and tighter.

“What’s wrong with you? Melee?” Thought Lu Mingfei. “So you are charging with miniaturized nukes and interested in melee?”

The man in the crimson suit stood on one side of the parking lot and took off his mask. His golden hair streaming down to set off a sculptured Greek face with a pair of rare icy blue eyes. He tossed the hunting knife in the air and looked across at the man in the black suit. The other also took off his mask, revealing an untamed head of black hair, pointing in different directions as sharp as swords.

“You came up to me means you are stronger than I thought.” Said the young man with golden hair.

“It is an honour to have Caesar said so.” The dark-haired young man responded coldly.

“But that’s it.” In the instant that he uttered these words, Caesar shot out like a sharp arrow. Lu Mingfei felt an invisible air pressure in the distance following Caesar’s attack, making his heart tremble and he stopped breathing. At the moment of the attack, Caesar’s figure blurred, because of the incredible speed. He’s like an eagle blows over from the sky! The hunting knife and the arm holding it were not recognizable, that was because the faster speed made his knife almost invisible!

It was a knife to kill a man, strong and solemn, with the majesty of an emperor. In this way, even a piece of iron will be cut open in front of him.

But Chu Zihang opposite is not iron, the long blade in his hand is a piece of iron. The sword of Caesar was about to be struck, in an instant Chu Zihang’s sword was gone. With a flick of his wrist, the long sword struck with a sharp blow, striking with little force upon Caesar’s point of the knife. This is beyond speed and skills. The knife is a lever, the tip of the force will transfer the greatest strength to the knife holder’s wrist, and Chu Zihang chose the time before Caesar’s real move. It was Caesar’s weakest hour, and he made the interception!

Lu Mingfei could not see these details clearly but saw that Caesar rushed to Chu Zihang. Chu Zihang did not move but just flashed for a moment, while Caesar bumped against an air wall. He staggered slightly, leaned back, and then retreated a few steps.

The air pressure like the emperor of Caesar was blocked by Chu Zihang, Lu Mingfei suddenly felt that his breath was unobstructed.

Metal beeping, that was Chu Zihang’s blade shaking. There’s only one moment it touched Caesar’s hunting knife, but the force of it made the long tamahagane 2) blade vibrating like a brass spring. The force of Caesar’s knife is too great. Chu Zihang’s sword is shaking away the great force it has received.

Chu Zihang stepped back and took a look at his blade. “Compare to ‘Dictator’, ‘Murasame’ is still not enough tough for fighting.”

Silence came again for a moment and then the two pounced.

  1. Red flag, which’s simply Chinese’s national flag.
  2. Tamahagane, Japanese tradition material to make katana (Japanese Blade).

Scene 2: Golden Pupils (2)

“A divinity school is a special kind of school where students study mainly about The God; There are medical schools, which study the mechanisms of the human body; Then there are business schools, which study the age-old question of ‘trading’. Cassel College is also such a special school. We study…”

Professor Guderian got up, grabbed the corner of the huge canvas behind him and took it off violently.

Ferocious picture exposed in the light. When Lu Mingfei’s sight touched the painting, he felt as if he was going to be pushed out of the train by the force.

It was the pressure of the painting.

The sky is a mixture of iron and blue with fire, and the only thing standing is a huge tree, its dead branches stretching in all directions, forming a dense net to support the cracked sky. The wasteland is covered with bones and a black giant is rising from the depths of the pile of bones with skeletons hanging from its wings. It stretches its huge membranous wings and spitting black flames to the sky.

A piercing roar echoed in Lu Mingfei’s head, and he thought he could even hear the roar of the monster.

“Dragon?” His voice was trembling.

“Yes, dragon. To be more precise, the dragon’s emperor, Nidhogg. According to the Nordic myth “The Elder Edda”, when Ragnarok is coming, it will bite to destroy the world tree Yggdrasill. On that day, the world will be destroyed.” Professor Guderian’s finger went through those hardbacks on the shelf. “If you know Latin, you can read the names of these books. DRAGON GENEALOGY, DRAGON AND SPEAKING SPIRIT, KEY OF SOLOMON, DRAGON BLOOD THEORY, DRAGON GENETICS… These are our accumulation for thousands of years. Countless generations of people were looking for the dragon and studying them. Cassel College is organized by these people. At Cassel, you can choose alchemy engineering, magic mechanical design, dragon’s blood theory, and so on, all with the ultimate goal,” he looked straight into Lu Mingfei’s eyes, “to slay the dragon!”

“To… To slay a dragon?”

“Dragon slaying,” Professor Guderian nodded, “has been going on for thousands of years in places you don’t know. Human has written one history without dragons, but another one with dragons in every line. But this secret is so amazing that if it were to be revealed, the possible negative consequences could not be determined. So we, families that are called ‘The Blood Generations’, in the past several thousand years, had held the secret jointly and took the mission of killing dragons. We had cultivated generations good at fighting, spells, magic and alchemy, and put them on the battlefield constantly. We buried dragon’s efforts of revival again and again. Until today, Cassel College had inherited those families’ legacy.”

“Le… Legacy?”

“Yes, because the dragon slayer’s families in history are huge and most of them have died out. In the new era, we can’t rely on family inheritance anymore. We must introduce the modern educational system.” Professor Guderian took his hand to Lu Mingfei. “Welcome to Cassel College, Lu Mingfei!”

“Wait… Don’t hold out your hand and say welcome without waiting for someone to decide, ok? Is your college the specialized school that trains dragon slayer? Come on!” Lu Mingfei had convulsion on his face. “Can the joke not be so funny? What is this? Is the opening CG of the new series of Dragon Quest? How did I get into your CG? Can you give me a portal to get out?”

There was a huge crash. The train shook, all the lights flickered out and darkness arrived.

“Hey, did the train hit the mountain?” Lu Mingfei touched his body, not injured, “Anyone got hurt? Does anyone know where the candle is?”

“Lu Mingfei, they are telling the truth.” Someone whispered in the dark.

All the lights came back on. It was the same luxurious train, the same leather sofa, but Professor Guderian and Fingel were gone. He turned his head and found the boy he saw in Chicago Station was sitting beside him.

“You, you, you… When did you get on the train?” Lu Mingfei stammered.

“I was always on the train, waiting for it just like you.” The boy said blandly.

“You sound like a ghost… ” said Lu Mingfei.

“Look out of the window,” the boy said. “welcome to… The land of the dragon!”

Lu Mingfei followed the boy’s sight to see the window with dilated eyes. In front of the world, he even lost the power of breathing.

It was no longer a dark night. The train was speeding across the vast expanse of ice. The white and bluish ice covered the mountains that pierced the sky, which was blood-red colour. Big rain was pouring down, every drop of it was bright red, down the window of the train. On the top of the ice mountain, the dragon in the picture was lying quietly, its wings reaching down to the foot of the mountain. Groups of people were climbing up the wings of the dragon, and those who reached the summit were around the head of the dragon. They nailed sharp iron cones to the skull of the dragon and beat the tail of the iron cones with great efforts. Every time a hole was drilled, a fountain of white slurry gusted out and evaporated into a rich white gas. Those people were shouting loud and cheering.

“The king of the black dragon, Nidhogg, who was killed thousands of years ago on his throne. The throne is the mountain that is always covered with snow and ice, and the killers had placed his huge body on the top of the mountain. His wings were down to the foot of the mountain, his blood ran down like lava, reddening the whole mountain, melting the ice and snow. Then the blood-coloured vapour rose into the sky, turning into dark red clouds and raining bright red rain. His killers bathed in the rain and hailed the day as ‘new age’.” The boy whispered.

“My God…!” Lu Mingfei was trembling at the sound of the hammer hitting the end of the iron cone.

“This is the oldest emperor that history has never recorded, and on the day he died, all the people cheered.” The boy’s voice was still calm.

He seemed to enjoy the sound of the blows, closing his eyes in silent admiration and smiling a little.

“So good. If it hadn’t been for that day, the world wouldn’t be the place it is today.” He opened his eyes and looked at Lu Mingfei.

Somehow, Lu Mingfei felt his smile was so sad.

Being sad…For thousands of years.

“You and the black dragon… Are familiar?” Lu Mingfei asked tentatively.

“No, on the contrary,” said the boy lightly. “I’m the one who wants to kill him the most. In the world, no one would wish to kill him more than me!”

Lu Mingfei opened his eyes and found himself lying on a cowherd bench, covered with a blanket. It is a quaint study, surrounded by bookcases with a crystal chandelier on the roof.

Lu Mingfei sat up and looked around, not far away from the desk side, Professor Guderian is dozing.

“Are you awake?” Professor Guderian raised his dishevelled head.

“Where is this? Did we have an accident? I just felt a rumble.” Lu Mingfei pressed his forehead, which seemed to have a jumping blood vessel.

“We got to Cassel College and everything went well. How could we bump into a mountain? You were so scared at the orientation that you fainted, so you were taken off the train…” Professor Guderian said: “There have been students who have been tutored before who have been quite surprised, but it’s really unprecedented for you to react like this. The dragons…” Guderian spread out his hands. “Is there so much fear? It’s essentially just a strong species.”

“No!” Lu Mingfei stared at Professor Guderian, “I’m not afraid of dragons… Have you seen the TERMINATOR?”

“Yes, Arnold Schwarzenegger, I like him, the current governor of California.” Professor Guderian nodded.

“Do you remember? There is a story about John Connor’s mother in the police station, telling the police that she saw a robot from time travel, he came from an era when humans were almost dying, the robot with a laser rifle shooting everywhere…” Said Lu Mingfei. “So the police said you’re crazy!”

“You think I’m insane?”

“Or I’m insane!” Claimed Lu Mingfei loudly.

“Well, for some freshmen, we have to show them the proof!” Professor Guderian clapped his hands.

The door opened and a middle-aged man with the words “I’m a Japanese” written across his face rushed in with a black suitcase with silvery metal side on each hand. After placing his two suitcases on the table, he bowed respectfully to Lu Mingfei and introduced himself in fluent Chinese. “My name is Yasushi Tomiyama, psychology teacher and counsellor. Nice to meet our ‘S’ level freshman. ‘S’ level hasn’t shown up for over 40 years.”

“Is it? May I ask who that ‘S’ freshman was forty years ago? Dragonborn?” 1) Lu Mingfei tried to use these people’s thinking way to speak.

“He had a chance, but he shot himself in the second semester of his sophomore year, so there was no follow-up.” Yasushi Tomiyama was very candid.

“Shot himself?”

“Because of his excellent performance and sharp thinking way, he felt into some philosophical difficulties when he studied the dragon’s book, and suicide before he could free himself. Later, we added a psychology counsellor.” Yasushi Tomiyama said.

“Sounds good,” said Lu Mingfei, catching his breath. “I’ve always had a reputation for being slow.”

“But you have potential!” Professor Guderian gave Yasushi Tomiyama a glowing thumbs-up, apparently indicating that he is the best student.

Lu Mingfei didn’t understand why he was glowing and wanted to cover his own face.

“We have brought with us two pieces of evidence of the existence of dragons in the world, both of which are of very high quality and we have borrowed them from the archives of the college.” Yasushi Tomiyama opened the first suitcase with the password and fingerprint. After removed layers of foam, Lu Mingfei saw a black scale, about half the size of the palm. It shows a perfect shield shape, and its surface is as smooth as oil, with clearly discernible texture.

“Pinch it.” Yasushi Tomiyama said.

Lu Mingfei picked up the scale carefully, and it felt like a fake. The texture was like steel, cold and tough, but the weight was very light. It was close to plastic with sharp edges. At this point, Yasushi Tomiyama put something into his hand.

Lu Mingfei was stunned, it was a pistol.

“Walter PPK pistol, 7.65 mm calibre, 280 m/s muzzle speed, effective range 50 m with some improvements made by the guys in the Armament Department. Now, you can shoot at the scales with it.” Yasushi Tomiyama placed the scale on the windowsill.

“I know this gun… James Bond used it, too.” Lu Mingfei’s face was pale.

“Yeah, that’s it.” Yasushi Tomiyama covered his ears. “Don’t worry, just shoot. Aim for the scale.”

“The logic of madmen is incomprehensible.” Lu Mingfei raised the gun with a bitter face, according to what he learned in high school military training and aimed at the scales.

A loud bang, Lu Mingfei felt like he was hit in the chest by a heavy hammer. The backseat force from the PPK made him feel that he had just fired a cannonball. He overturned and fell into the sofa behind, almost out of breath.

“So he is not that kind of outstanding student on physical strength!” Yasushi Tomiyama’s voice came beside his ear. “Maybe I should bring a regular revolver.”

“Is this gun from the Armament Department? Alas, the things that those lunatics have reformed should not be tried so easily!” Professor Guderian complained.

“A little bit curious at the moment. It’s a good gun, although it may not be able to blow out the dragon’s eyes with one shot, it is estimated that it can leave some marks on fourth generations and fifth generations.” Yasushi Tomiyama said.

Lu Mingfei shook his head hard and saw the situation around. The first thing is Professor Guderian’s face full of concern, and the second thing is the black scales in hand of Yasushi Tomiyama, a perfect black scales, nothing left on its surface. Lu Mingfei is absolutely sure that he just shot the center of the scales. He is not a physically outstanding student, but in the military training 2) he’s the student who hit all the targets. Even his instructor was surprised by this normal guy.

A gun likes cannon could not even pierce the scale.

“This is the dragon scale, which Sven Hedin found in the ancient city of Loulan, Xinjiang, China, in 1900. He couldn’t recognize it, but he found that neither fire nor hammer could damage it. So, he brought it back from China to Europe. It was recognized in Europe by Maynic Cassel. That’s one of the proofs. Now you’re supposed to believe it a little bit?” Yasushi Tomiyama said.

“Can’t it be high-tech?” Lu Mingfei was still stubborn.

“Even a titanium alloy made of nanotechnology can’t stop a shot like that, right?” Yasushi Tomiyama said, “I have a Ph.D. in the material major from the University of Tokyo, you have to believe me.”

Not only all the people here are crazy, but also all these people are highly educated. Lu Mingfei thought.

“Well, then the second proof.” Yasushi Tomiyama opened the second suitcase. A cylindrical glass bottle looks like the one used in biology class to hold specimens, was brought to Lu Mingfei.

Lu Mingfei opened his mouth as if he had been struck by lightning. If Yasushi Tomiyama had stuck an orange in his mouth, he probably wouldn’t have noticed. In the yellowish formalin solution was a lizard-like creature, yellow-white, with a long, curled tail, like a fetus in the womb. Its long whiskers were floating slowly in the solution, looking as serene as a baby with its eyes closed. If it weren’t for the two wings spread out on the back of the thing, Lu Mingfei would think it was some kind of ancient lizard.

“This is a red dragon cub. It’s not even dead yet but just sleeping. Dragons are hard to kill, especially those aristocratic dragons: First generations and second generations. Even if you destroy their body, you cannot destroy the soul, they will wake up again.” Yasushi Tomiyama said, “It is an extremely rare specimen. Humans often fail to capture the dragon, because dragons can feel the activity of the human brain, and it will run away or attack. This specimen was found in India in 1796. Luckily, the red dragon cub was probably just hatching when it was swallowed by a python. Some farmers killed the python and got the cub.”

“Isn’t it really plastic?” Lu Mingfei covered his face. “I’m done. My worldview is done.”

“Look at it up close, look at the details, look at the scale, what kind of artist could make this perfect plastic?” Yasushi Tomiyama put the glass bottle in front of him.

Now through a half centimetre thick glass, he’s facing the dragon. Its membranous wings and whiskers were fluttering in the solution, suspended like in clouds. Yasushi Tomiyama is right. The details, the lines, are so real that only nature or god can create such things. They exist in the shadows of history, in the legends of different peoples, in the limits of the human imagination, and in this sealed glass bottle.

“Perfect, isn’t it?” Yasushi Tomiyama said with admiration.

“Perfect.” Lu Mingfei mumbled.

He stared at the membrane that covered the dragon’s eye and thought of the golden pupils that opened slowly in the darkness as if the door of the world had opened before his eyes.

The red dragon cub in the formalin solution suddenly opened its eyes, its golden eyes. It shivered convulsively from head to tail, craned its neck to shout at Lu Mingfei, and then the burning flame was ignited in the depth of its throat and ejected! It struggled to open its wings, trying to break the bottle: It came to life with body big as a cat, but with the majesty of the dragon.

Lu Mingfei did not dodge. The three were all silly, looking at the ancient specimen’s resurrection in front of them.

The little dragon’s flame died out in an instant, and formalin solution was poured into its throat, making it cough as painfully as a drowning man. At the same time, it failed to break through the glass bottle. The centuries-old recovery ended as quickly as it began, and soon the cub curled itself up again, serene and dormant.

“Ahhhh!” Lu Mingfei was able to scream finally and pointed at the bottle shakily.

“Don’t shout.” Murmured professor Guderian.

“Don’t you see? Don’t you see it? Just now it came back to life! It’s alive! Live dragon!” Shouted Lu Mingfei, shaking the absolutely silly old fellow.

“Yes,” said professor Guderian, turning to Yasushi Tomiyama. “You saw that too, right?”

Yasushi Tomiyama’s face turned pale and he could only nod. “Yes… But that’s not my idea… I didn’t know it would wake up…” he raised his voice suddenly, almost shouting. “What the hell? Did the archivists get the labels wrong? It’s supposed to wake up in 2077! They’ll kill us for mislabeling like that! Just now it sprayed dragon’s flame! Dragon’s flame!”

“Fortunately from last year we replaced the container to nanomaterials, otherwise it can’t hold up…” Professor Guderian broke out in a cold sweat. “My god, Professor Manstein and I calculated the day it woke up. Unless… Unless it’s the Lineage Call!”

“Lineage Call?” Yasushi Tomiyama turned to look at Lu Mingfei like looking at a monster.

“What would bring the dragon to life early, other than the Lineage Call?” Professor Guderian’s eyes blazing and he slapped Lu Mingfei strongly on the shoulder. “Now you know what a great man you are, Lu Mingfei?”

The shoulder of Lu Mingfei should be collapse patted by the professor, “What? Don’t lay such a deadly accident on me! I have done nothing!”

“The dragon king is the one who can subdue humans by mere staring. You don’t have to do much, because you are a dragon hybrid with second generation’s power!” Professor Guderian nodded at Lu Mingfei with all his strength.

1) Dragonborn: In the game Elder Scroll, the player will become Dragonborn, whose goal is to kill dragons.

2) What military training is just normal physical training for 10 days before students enter university. They will be able to shoot once during the train.
